"Deej did an incredible job as the Pastor and officiant at our wedding. But it wasn't just our wedding, it was the counseling meetings leading up to our wedding. He was extremely loving and caring towards us and is extremely easy to open up to. He was able to connect with the guests at the wedding and MANY people have spoken to us after the wedding telling us how much they liked Deej. Thank you for helping make our special even more special! "

"Dan DeMey did an outstanding job officiating at our wedding on April 9, 2016. My husband and I met with him about a month before our wedding to go over details and we loved how he had us fill out a personal questionnaire about the first time we met and impressions of each other as well as other questions. We had to keep our answers private and then at the wedding he read them to us. It was such a nice personal touch that everyone enjoyed. Dan has a wonderful demeanor and takes marriage very seriously so we really liked that about him as well. He brought humor and love to our ceremony and we couldn't be happier! We received a lot of compliments from family and friends about what an amazing job he did. I would highly recommend Dan as an officiant for your wedding!!"

"My wife and I had the true pleasure and real honor of having Ira Liss perform our marriage ceremony in Malibu, California in 2015. She is Greek Orthodox Christian and I come from a secular but spiritual background. Ira was especially good at respecting our families' varied beliefs, and he helped us convey exactly what we wanted to about our own beliefs and values, and what our marriage means to us as a newlywed couple. I strongly recommend Ira as a wedding officiant. He is very thoughtful, well spoken and he does a terrific job."

"We had Lisa officiate our wedding this past summer and could not be happier with the experience. She was truly a pleasure to work with. She had a positive, friendly and warm way about her that we loved. She was extremely flexible with helping us design our ceremony. She provided guidance and suggestions while leaving it open to us to personalize how we liked. She was always available to contact through email or phone for anything. On the day of the wedding, she was a calming presence and someone we couldn't be happier to have been apart of such an important event and day in our lives."

"The impact on our life that Joy has made is apparent to all we spend time with. We were looking for a wedding officiant and found a person we consider "Family" now. Her personal and knowledgeable insights to merging two into one, helps us daily. We have reached levels of intimacy and understanding that were unknown to us through the skills and classes lead by Joy. Her outlook is so much more than a wedding officiant is, but, what it should be! We LOVE her and could not imagine anyone else sharing the "before", "during", and "after" as we became Mr and Mrs Hampton."

"Use Pastor Michael Welchert to officiate our August 2016 wedding. We instantly clicked with him; out-going, great listener, very experienced, spoke from the heart and really cared about us as a couple and genuinely wanted us to be happy, healthy and married. We wanted a simple, yet heart felt, deep Christian wedding officiant and Michael was everything we wanted and more! Michael offers pre-marriage counseling, which we found to be highly beneficial and gave us the opportunity to connect with him on a deeper level than with just one initial meeting. Great advice and guidance. All our wedding guests loved him and asked how we found such a great officiant. We were 110% satisfied with Michael's services and would highly recommend him to any couple. "Rachel was a wonderful, flexible officiant. She flawlessly turned our non-religious spiritual beliefs into a touching, short and sweet ceremony. Rachel also easily incorporated our water purification ritual with an Indian blessing, the perfect touch! She was punctual and patient when we ran a bit behind schedule. I highly recommend using Rachel for your wedding!"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.
