Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a wedding officiant during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The safest way to conduct a consultation during COVID-19 is virtually. Ask wedding officiants near you if they can have a phone call or a virtual appointment over video chat. If they can, make sure to ask them any questions you have about upcoming work. Discuss what precautions, if any, they have in place to ensure safety. You might consider asking if they accept digital payments or if they can complete the work remotely, without any in-person contact.

Do wedding officiants offer remote or virtual services?

Reach out to wedding officiants in your area, and ask them if they can offer a remote or virtual ceremony. Some officiants may be willing to meet in person while maintaining 6 feet of distance, while others may prefer to conduct the entire service over the phone or a video call service such as Skype or Zoom.

Familiarize yourself with the social distancing rules in your community, city and state, and move forward only if both you and the officiant are comfortable with the arrangement.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a wedding officiant when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a wedding officiant when social distancing, ask if the officiant can offer remote services. Some wedding officiants are choosing to conduct services virtually and/or stand more than 6 feet away from the parties. Discuss possible arrangements with your wedding officiant, and familiarize yourself with your local community guidelines, as well as the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing. Only move forward if you and the officiant both feel comfortable.

You may want to implement extra precautions, such as using digital payments instead of exchanging cash, sanitizing all involved spaces and waving instead of shaking hands.

Can I use digital payments to pay for a wedding officiant?

Ask your wedding officiant if they accept digital payments. Many professionals are accept payment via Venmo, PayPal, Square Cash, Apple Pay, Zelle and other online platforms. Professionals may be more willing to switch to digital payments during the COVID-19 pandemic, as this is typically considered safer than using cash or credit cards. You can see which digital payment options officiants accept by reviewing their online profiles.

Does a wedding officiant need to enter my home?

This depends on the location of your wedding. Unless the ceremony is being held in your home, a wedding officiant will not need to enter your home before the ceremony. Some couples are choosing to stand outside or go to a vacant public place, so the officiant can conduct the ceremony while maintaining 6 feet of distance. Ask your wedding officiant what kinds of arrangements they offer, including virtual or remote services.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

We met with a few officiants for our non-traditional, Halloween/Fall-themed wedding, but Fatina stood out among them because she was focused on our story and exactly what we wanted from our ceremony. She was completely open to the thought of dressing up to officiate our wedding; and the costume she chose was absolutely perfect (we'll have to upload a picture when we get them)! She gave guidance when we needed it for the vows and added in parts that were specific and meaningful to our relationship. Fatina was very composed and focused while she officiated our wedding, even with multiple child-related distractions (LOL). We would recommend Fatina to anyone in need of a wedding officiant!

We had the best experience with Colorado Wedding Ministers. We eloped and had two weeks to find an officiant. Not only did we find and hire THE BEST officiant, we were honored to have I Do for You Photography, who captured some truly amazing photos. If you hire Kris (Colorado Wedding Ministers) you must hire Ken (I Do for You Photography). You will not be disappointed.

We had DJ officiate our wedding at Wash Park and it was wonderful. We needed someone who was bilingual and could keep English & Spanish speakers happy and comfortable. He exceeded our expectations, everyone at our ceremony was extremely pleased. We got rave reviews from our families afterwards on how great everything was. We highly recommend DJ as an officiant. Thanks for everything!

It was an honor to have Chaplain Wayne MacKirdy officiate my wedding. Our friends and family raved about how much they loved our ceremony. It was such a blessing, thank you Wayne for making Kevin and my day extra special. (p.s. Kevin was sold just by seeing your Stetson hat in your photos)

I hired Teri to be our officiant for our wedding on June 23, 2018 and it was a great experience. She was very responsive and easy to work with to come up with a ceremony that worked well for my husband and I. She also involved our daughter in the ceremony and made it that much more special! I would definitely recommend her!

DJ did an incredible job officiating our wedding! He is extremely personable, professional, and responsive. He is also bilingual in English and Spanish which is exactly what my wife and I were looking for. The ceremony was officiated in both languages and in a way that was time efficient and honoring for both families. Another thing we appreciated was the stories and personal things we told him about our relationship that were woven into the ceremony. If you are looking for a charismatic and all around genuine person to share in the love, excitement, and joy of your day I highly recommend DJ.

When looking for a Pastor, we were in for a challenge from growing up in the Catholic church, but not currently practicing in shared religion. When originally searching, I felt discouraged to find officiants who had such high price tags without even offering to do a rehearsal! Going back to the drawing board, I searched instead for the quality of an officiant. An INCREDIBLE quality that Pastor Michael offers is 6 month follow up marriage counseling. It is about the marriage not the wedding as it says on his website! Though intimidating, Pastor Michael impressed with flying colors when he was pre-screened by the Mother-in-Law, other family, and the bride. Throughout the whole meeting he was professional and showed a clear understanding of what the bride and groom had in mind for the ceremony. Pastor Michael kept things clear, direct, and simple. He is transparent and very, very good at leading weddings! He made the rehearsal feel so easy and kept everything flowing well during the wedding ceremony. Pastor Michael added SO many personal touches to our ceremony with the surprise description about the symbol of rings to a blessing in Latin and impromptu humor when our ceremony was delayed due to a temporary power outage. Guests at the wedding asked “where did you get this Pastor? He was SO AWESOME!” We HIGHLY recommend him for anyone getting married in Colorado, because he will be everything you want and MORE in order to make your wedding day (and future lives together) incredible and unforgettable!

We are so very glad to have met Pastor Michael and were blessed to have him as our Officiant! From the beginning it just felt right; he was professional yet easy to talk with, inquired about our story, listened attentively, took notes, and enjoyed getting to know us, as we did with him. The day of our wedding, Pastor Michael arrived early, made everyone feel comfortable, and truly did a tremendous job with our ceremony! We chose traditional vows, and included handfasting; he cleverly transitioned and eloquently captured the essence of our relationship, bringing even more to the ceremony than we had anticipated! Pastor Michael is a natural and we HIGHLY recommend him as an Officiant!!! (Plus he looks good in our photos!) Thank you, Pastor Michael!!!

Jason was our officiant for our wedding ceremony two weeks ago. I can't say enough good things about Jason. Early on he gave us this sense that we'd known him forever, which provided us the comfort we made the right selection, and that he was going to provide the same care and attention that you would a family member. He made himself available for phone discussions and pre-ceremony site visits to make sure the plan was in place for the big day. Even though we were a bit behind schedule and we forgot the marriage license at home, Jason easily rolled with the punches and everything was perfect just like we hoped. We can't thank Jason enough for being a part of or special day, and highly recommend him for his services. - Mark & Jezamine

Reverend Karen Mohr is what made our personal, intimate and romantic ceremony for two complete! She arrived right on time and was very peaceful and calm as I was finishing up the last details of our home wedding. We truly felt like we had a loving family member officiate our marriage. Her voice was soothing, and her calm delivery of the prayers, vows, and final dedication put us at ease (and tears) the entire time. We could not have wished for a more perfect person to marry us. She even snapped a few beautiful photos for us after! I am tearing up at the thought of how blessed we were to find her! Thank you again, Reverend Karen, for your professionalism and personal touch which you genuinely offered during this wonderful time of our lives! Maureen and Jim
