Working with Brenda and Mary of Bloomery Forge, LLC has been both educational and rewarding as a fellow copywriter. Masters of their craft, I have long regarded Brenda and Mary, indirectly, as mentors. Through careful emulation many years ago, I was able to establish my own style of copywriting while adhering to Bloomery Forge's engaging and thought-provoking writing techniques. I have collaborated with them on large-scale advertising campaigns for luxury resorts, as well as magazine writing for an interior design and architectural publication. All experiences were first-rate.

I had the chance to work with Michael on a number of occasions, and he is always spot-on with great strategy, content and ideas. I especially think he is a gifted writer and problem-solver, and is probably one of the more resourceful people I've worked with in recent memory. He's very well-versed for digital engagements, including copywriting, content strategy, and certain types of transaction content and micro-copy. My only criticism is that he no longer lives close to me, so I can't meet with him face to face. But he's wonderful to work with regardless.

Our daughter's on-line applications to two private high schools were comprised of a series of tiny boxes that limited the space for answers. We needed to fit everything we wanted to say into the paltry space allowed. Somehow, Savan Associates managed, by deadline, to help us pack our daughter's many attributes into the allowable space. She got accepted to both schools. The following year, Savan Associates helped us with our older son's on-line applications to the same two schools, working with us to condense his myriad talents into detailed yet succinct paragraphs. He, too, got accepted to both schools. Needless to say, we'll return to Savan Associates when the time comes to complete the private-school applications for our younger son as well as any other writing/editing we might need along the way. We can't give a better recommendation than that. > > Ricki T. > St. Louis, Missouri

Ted helped showed me how to look back at my own writing and see all the improvements I could make. He is always pleasant to talk to and provides supportive and encouraging feedback.

It's tough to find a good copywriter nowadays. So, where do you go when you need ideas fast? Start with my head full of ideas. Bring me onto your project and you'll have good ideas that very day. And that night, as you're going out to dinner with your spouse you'll say, "Jordan Sher's Head Full of Ideas gave me fast, brilliant marketing ideas and great copy. I looked like a superstar in front of my clients and superiors. Let's order the lobster!" Advertising agencies love it. Clients are satisfied. Even designers are pleased. And spouses the world over are ordering lobster to celebrate.

With 25+ years experience, I provide copywriting and creative directing services to ad agencies, design firms, and companies who need solid writing skills and strategic marketing without the drama. Web content, blogs, press releases, newsletters, advertising campaigns, direct mail and more. The key to great copy is providing an emotional connection between you, your product or service and your desired target audience.

I understand the challenges you face in marketing your products and services. More importantly, I know what you want when you seek outside help with your copy and I deliver on time, on budget, and on strategy every time. I will make your phone ring and the Web and mail orders come pouring in. I also write content that represents your organization in a positive light and builds your organization's reputation.

You know a good piece of writing when you read it. It's compelling, intriguing, thoughtful, informative, and it invokes an emotional response. You might not realize when you are reading good copy, because you are so enticed that you don't realize you're being wooed! That's the kind of copy I write -- as opposed to stale 'canned copy,' which is a turnoff for today's savvy consumers. Never settle for mediocre when it comes to delivering critical messaging. Your readers and / or customers are too important.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
