As this was my first experience dealing with an editor, I had only a slight idea about what to expect. I was hoping Christopher wouldn't pull any punches with my manuscript. As it turned out, he was brutal. It was exactly what I needed. He was extremely professional, very timely, and totally unforgiving. I could have counted the grammatical and spelling errors that he found but I'd probably still be counting them. Better than that though was his attention to the content and direction of my book (It's a 61,000 word fictional story). He had me questioning so much. Tense, repetition, logic, flow, etc. Did I use all of his suggestions? Almost. That's the other great thing I truly appreciated about Christopher. He understood the need for me to decide for myself whether or not to ignore him. He made sure I knew and accepted the fact that - yes - he is a professional editor, and at the same time he chose not to play the tyrant. Will I use him again? Most definitely. My only fear is that he'll read this review and call me with corrections. Vince Dowdle Jr.

I started taking lessons with Laura to resume my Spanish studies after a 6 year gap and to improve my Spanish conversation skills for travel purposes. I have benefited from her teaching style and learning approach greatly. Each lesson is focused on areas which I struggle and she incorporates reading, writing, and communication into each lesson. Nevertheless, success is still directly proportional to the time and effort I put into each lesson after class, however Laura has provided me with the resources and instruction necessary to learn the language. In the 6 or 7 classes I have had with her already my skills have improved, and I look forward to continue to study with her and advance my Spanish conversation skills over the coming year.

Cate did a great job with my resume. Quick and effective especially since I am changing careers and did not have a lot of experience in my new degree. She has made me look much more professional then I could have done left to my own resume writing. Cate also really researched my new profession to see what I would require to look good for a prospective employer. I very much recommend her and will use her talents again.

I highly recommend Nancy Sparrow and Sparrow Solutions for all business and household support! I have used their Business Services and their Personal Concierge services since 2008. I have 100% trust in them. Nancy is a dynamic person and I trust her and her team to do whatever it takes to get things done. On the personal side...they manage my credit cards, finances, my son's schedule, my calendar, travel arrangements, household projects, errands, storage units, etc. As a note...she is also a very solid editor of copy. On the Business Services side, SS provides admin support, inventory, operational support, business development and research, marketing and sales, writing and editing as well as lots of projects we don't have specific staff for. It would be a mistake not to go with Sparrow Solutions.

Savan Associates

When the time came for my daughter to apply to professional schools, we wanted an expert writer and editor to teach her how to polish the required essay she had written to accompany her application. We hired Savan Associates, and couldn't have been happier with the results. Savan Associates worked back-and-forth by email with my daughter, had her rewrite her essay three times to incorporate information missing from the prior drafts, and provided questions and comments on each draft to help her fill in any remaining blanks. Then Savan Associates coached her on how to condense that information into a final draft. Not only was her final essay concise, dynamic, and jammed with pertinent details, all within the maximum character count, but it precisely captured my daughter, her background and experience, her love of animals, and the reasons she should be accepted to vet school. Most valuable was how Savan Associates educated my daughter on writing and editing. This tutoring process not only enabled her to refine her essay into the product she desired for her veterinary school application, but also helped her improve her written communication skills for the long-term. Best of all, my daughter was accepted into five vet schools, including one of the top-ranked schools in the country. We know her excellent grades, GRE scores, and personal interviews had much to do with her acceptances, but we have no doubts her essay helped distinguish her from the competition. S. L. Z. Mr. Morse is an excellent tutor. I have an eleventh grader that struggles with reading comprehension and writing. Mr. Morse started tutoring for us with very short notice and even read the book my nephew is reading in class, almost completely, by the first session (with only hours to prep). He has definitely helped my nephew understand what he is reading by relating it to what he knows and loves, (football, current events, etc) and inspires him to write better. Apprehensive at first, my nephew now looks forward to meeting with Mr. Morse and has a new found respect for language arts. We are fortunate he came along and glad we made the call. Thank you Mr. Morse, it is always a pleasure.

I don’t edit for writers, but with writers. Yes, I’ll make changes and comments and suggestions and omissions and give you my educated opinions, but writing is a communal activity. It exists in an interactive space, a place where a writer can explore all types of creativity. My job as your editor is to guide and shape your writing, to bolster what’s working and encourage it—and you—to keep going. You write. I observe, engage, and respond. Then together we comb out the tangles and add in some conditioner—because that’s what working with me as your editor will be like: we’ll smooth out the rough drafts, give it all a solid foundation so then the story can continue to grow. General edits and line edits. Private lessons: Tell Chelsey what you want to work on, and she'll choose a book that she thinks would be helpful in accordance to your wants/needs, and will read the book with you. She will assign weekly lessons and questions about different craft aspects in the book, as well as writing exercises. Each week, the writer emails Chelsey a piece of writing under 2000 words (either a single piece of writing or a selection of smaller pieces), and she'll do those hardcore edits. The amount of writing you send to Chelsey is up to you. Some people like to get comments on the writing exercises provided to them. Some like to submit the latest version of a piece she/he/ze is working on. Either of these options--or any other ones you might come up with--are fine. The focus here is on your writing. Chelsey will accommodate for and support all of the ways in which you want to learn and work.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
