Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project(s).

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

We had a building permit, we could not pass the final inspection with the other electricians work. Michael did the job and we finally passed! His prices are more than fair for his quantity of work. Thanks!

4 other electricians couldn’t figure out how to fix my small job. Heart heating and cooling stopped by and fixed it within 30 minutes and I couldn’t be happier. They are priced very well and the tech was absolutely amazing.

All I can say is, this guy is f$@&!#* AMAZING! Very personal, hard-working, honest, dependable, straight shooter! Put in a nine hour day, never took a lunch break or anything. He walked us through every step of the way, always explaining what he was going to do and what our options were. Pricing is fair and reasonable. Extremely honest, everyone should hire “LARRY the electrician”! If you don’t hire this guy, you’re an idiot! He put in the electrical for four ceiling fans, was 75% less than the another electricians quote.

John showed up on time and had my bathroom exhaust fan replaced in no time at all. He even addressed a side issue that was not a part of the original service call before leaving my house. If you have any need for an electrician, call John!

Larry was the only electrician brave enough to tackle our vaulted living room ceiling fan addition project. He was responsive in communicating before the project, showed up right on time and did a great job. We’ll be passing his name along to family and friends in the area. Thanks Larry!

Once again we are thrilled with the work Larry did. He came a day after we reached out and added a dedicated circuit w/ 4 outlets in the workshop area of our garage. Incredible value for the quality of work, and scheduling with Jade was quick and easy! Happy to have a dependable electrician to call in the future, Larry is simply the best.

From my first conversation with Tony, I knew I was dealing with a legit guy. Sent a few pics and he gave me a ball park price and stayed true. Mike and Justin arrived on time / got in and out with a job well done. Nice guys, hard workers. You’ll do good to partner with “The Electricians

Job was the installation of 4 can lights in my kitchen. The job was completed in a timely manner. However, when the owner Jerrett came by to give me a bid he appeared to be in quite a hurry. As a result he neglected to discuss the need for a dimmer switch. Not being an electrician, I had no idea what I needed or what questions to ask. When the electrician arrived to do the job, he pointed out that I needed a dimmer switch and my current configuration would not allow for it unless he changed the switch box. This resulted in an increase of $275 taking my $480 job to $755. When I called Jerrett about it he put the blame on me, credited me $40 for installation and really took no responsibility for his lack of attention to the bid for my job. Work that was done was fine, but I feel a bit baited and switched on the whole thing. Be careful.

Michael is an exceptional electrician and we are very pleased with him. We had a panel replaced, outlets grounded, a ceiling fan installed and new outlet put in for a tv mount. Bought an older house that needed some things addressed and Michael has brought it up to speed. Very knowledgable and also did things to keep things esthetically appealing on our outside panel. We have already recommended him to a few people for when they purchase their houses and will definitely have him come back if we ever need further work done.

Michael Retland responded to my request and came to our home. He spent quite awhile trouble-shooting our electrical issue. His solution was to contact Excel and file an emergency report. Michael even talked to the Excel representative and told them what was needed. Excel is going to replace our aging electrical cable. Mr. Retland even called us to make sure we have had a response from Excel. I could not have asked for a more competent, caring, and thorough electrician. Thumbtack gave us a quality referral whom we will recommend to others and call again if needed.

Due to an extreme fear of heights and lack of a tall ladder, I sought out an electrician to take down an old ceiling fan for us that was mounted on 18’ ceiling, and replace with a new fixture. Larry was the first to respond and offered the lowest price by far! His work was incredibly quick, he filled us in along the way with what he was doing, and even had a compatible dimmer switch handy to change out for us. Scheduling with Jade was a breeze, and we couldn’t be happier with the work. Bonus: our dog LOVED Larry and sulked around the house after he left - a testament to how friendly he is! We already discussed a future project with Larry and can’t wait to have him come back again!

I was excited to have Chris perform my electrical work for me after reading all the positive reviews. We spoke on the phone and set a window for 3-4 days later; he said he would let me know specifics later in the week. Just after noon on the third day I still hadn't heard from him so I called and asked if he was still planning on coming out. He said he couldn't today; he'd try again tomorrow. Tomorrow came and same thing. Hadn't heard from him by about 2. I asked if he was going to make it out. He said he was sick and not going to make it. Here we are four days after that and absolutely zero communication from him. I've already hired another electrician, but the point is that this job would have been done if I had just gone with the other company in the first place. Regardless of whether he truly is sick, his communication is terrible at best. My one star rating is a reflection of that poor communication and his apparent indifference towards me or my project.

Finally, a person with integrity and a hell of a work ethic. Y'all know how hard it is to find good craftsmanship theses days. Well I found an electrician with all this and more. Larry has been juggling personal life with work also with his personel not being able to work because of the carona virus. Larry's first visit to myhouse left him in a pickle. He spent an hour trying to find the problem in my house and left to get to another job. He scheduled himself to come back on Saturday but lost his assistant, which put him quite a ways behind. He called and rescheduled for Monday at 11am. He found out that he was put into a situation which would not allow him to keep his appointment. He communicated this with me. WOW. (That in itself is not typical of construction ) He said he could get here as soon as 2pm. Great I'll take it. I had to run errons , I got back at 2:20 and he had already found the problem. (very cool) His price was more than fair as I have watched other eletricians screw people to the enth degree. Oh I forgot to tell you why I used him in the 1st place. He told me VIA email how I could trouble shoot my problem. After I tried on my own and couldn't fix it I called a fella named Larry who wanted to HELP. Larry is now in my contacts under Larrytheelectrician. My go to electric dude. Monte Brook
