Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do packing services cost?

The cost of packing services ranges between $60 and $80. However, the cost you wind up paying will depend on a number of different factors. These factors include whether you have provided the moving boxes yourself or need to purchase them from the company, as well as the hourly rate of the packing service may charge. A larger-size home or office will often result in higher packing costs, as will the need to handle a lot of fragile or especially heavy/cumbersome items.

What are the advantages of packing services?

Hiring a professional packing service can help ensure your heavy, fragile and special-care belongings are handled safely during your move. These pros are familiar with all types of packing procedures and materials, and they’ll use the right tools and equipment to move your belongings. Packers and movers are also available to assist with cumbersome items like mattresses, safes and large furniture, and they can handle heavy lifting. And if needed, packers can disassemble and assemble furniture for you.

Who do I hire for unpacking and packing help?

Hire a professional moving, packing or unpacking service in your area for help. You can use a tool like Thumbtack to see the best services in your area, along with their ratings and reviews. Once you’ve identified a few professionals who seem like a good fit, get cost estimates from each of them and compare your quotes. Also, don’t forget to check licensing requirements in your state to make sure the professional you hire is properly licensed and insured.

Do movers unpack for you?

Yes, many movers offer unpacking services for you once they deliver your belongings to your new site, or even if you have already had them delivered. However, be aware that this could lead to higher charges, so be sure to ask the movers what their rates are. Movers also don’t usually put items away, but rather set them on tabletops and other surfaces. Some moving companies may have a policy preventing them from unpacking boxes you have packed yourself.

How do I prepare my house for a professional packer?

To prepare your house for a professional packer, start by completing a deep house cleaning and organizing session. This includes washing dishes, tools, laundry, beds, etc. Next, get rid of anything and everything you don’t need. Collect items that you plan on moving yourself. Organize everything, and label each box, marking anything that is high-value. Finally, have everything in a position where it’s easy for the packers and movers to access.

When should you start packing?

You should start picking up packing supplies (moving boxes, etc.) at least one to three months before you move. The earlier, the better. Start by cleaning your house and deciding what you will be taking, then follow up by selling or donating whatever you don’t need. At around four weeks out, decide on a moving service and schedule your move-out date. And start the packing process by putting your belongings into boxes, wrapping furniture and organizing for the unload.

Where do you start packing when moving out?

When deciding on what to pack first, think about how you can minimize disruptions to your everyday life. For example, start with storage areas such as the basement or attic. These items are not likely to be needed in the next few weeks. Next, move onto storage areas like the shed, closet and garage. Pack away any out-of-season items you won’t need in the next month. Then, move on to tools, equipment, books, collections and displays you don’t utilize in your day-to-day life. Things like clothes, towels, sheets and dishes should be packed closer to your move-out date.

Do movers pack boxes for you?

Many moving companies offer packing services as well. While the typical role of movers is to move already-packed boxes, furniture and other belongings, these pros are also skilled in safely packing belongings in less time than the average person. They have the materials and experience to protect fragile items and predict potential damage in the moving process. This is particularly important for glass and artwork.

What is a packing service?

A packing service helps homeowners and businesses pack up their belongings in preparation for a move, as well as unpack items when moving in. They’re often used to help with large numbers of items and are a great choice when there are multiple floors to contend with.

Professional packing services can also provide boxes or use the boxes you provide them. They can also help assemble furniture and perform heavy lifting, as well as deal with valuable, delicate or cumbersome items.

Reviews for Littleton packing services
Marissa G.
If I could give zero stars, I would! I don’t usually review anything, but I feel compelled to warn other customers planning a stressful move. TLDR: I would never ever recommend this company to anyone. Poor service, terrible customer service, steals/damages items, and overcharges by insisting on payment before leaving your home, without showing you what you’re paying for. I do HIGHLY recommend using MOVING COLORADO. This company had to finish my move when Fantastic Movers could not, and they were incredibly helpful, movers were friendly, fast, and thorough. Pricing was transparent, fair, and on target with their quote. Excellent customer service through and through. In terms of my experience with Fantastic Movers, my Packers arrived 6 hours late, requested free pizza at the time of arrival, and packed minimally. As I was packing on a different date than my move, I placed sticky notes on the items I wanted excluded from packing, such as TV’s, coffee maker, lamps, etc. - roughly 3-5 boxes of items, which we planned to pack ourselves on moving day while the movers emptied the house. They packed maybe 70% of the remaining items, likely because they ran out of time, then stated on moving day "it goes faster if you pack everything first." I'm assuming the person who made the comment did not realize I had paid for packing service through the company. Insisted on payment before leaving (presumably so I couldn’t check the details thoroughly) and overcharged me for packing by 45 min (my ring doorbell footage proves this) and has not responded to my messages requesting a refund. On moving day, they arrived hours late as well. With only 2 movers instead of 4, with more trickling in throughout the day. With one truck instead of the two I ordered. I spoke with someone at the company, who stated that many movers had quit before the weekend, and I would not be charged for travel time for the second trip with the truck. They also agreed to send a 5th mover at no additional charge to speed up the move. I was more than satisfied with this answer, however, once again, payment was due before they vacated the house, so I did not have time to properly review it. The final bill shows that I was not compensated for the full travel time (1 hour with 4 men) but a fraction of that time. Again, no response at all to my request for refund. As there was only one truck, and they arrived very late understaffed, our second trip with the truck was finished very late, yet all the contents of the house had not been delivered to my new house. I then had to book a SECOND moving company to finish the move (Moving Colorado - HIGHLY recommend). If all of these things are not reason enough to never use this company, the movers were incredibly rude to us the entire move, absolutely zero customer service skills - And I can get along with absolutely anyone! It was very uncomfortable to be in a house with 5 movers for 9+ hours who seemed to absolutely hate us from the moment of arrival. They stole cash and various small valuable items during the move, again, no response from the moving company - not even a request for proof (which I obviously can’t provide) or a feeble denial of this fact. Packing was god awful - all my jewelry tangled up and thrown into the bottom of a box (all of which had to be thrown away), broken items from poor packing, damaged pool table felt (which makes my table garbage now) - I could go on and on! Between the items stolen, the inaccurate quote, the broken/ruined items, and the overcharging of time I did not use, my move cost me about $5000 more than expected. I am happy to accept my mere $200.50 refund I am requesting out of principle, and put this nightmare behind me, but there has been no response to my request for a refund. This company should be put out of business for any one of the reasons I itemized above, and I have not yet decided if I should contact various oversight organizations regarding this business. I do not appreciate the shady business practices this company engages in from the bottom to the top, and I do not appreciate being taken advantage of during an already stressful time. Book Fantastic Movers at your own risk!! Pack any and all even SLIGHTLY valuable items before they arrive, and don’t pay until you see your itemized bill - although they demand payment before they’ll leave your house without showing you what you are paying for.
