Ian was prompt doing the repairs. He also communicated with me regarding a small delay. The walls are faux painted and Ian did a good job matching the paint and design. His texturing in one room was a little heavier and the original walls. I solved the problem by hanging a iron grate type fixture over it. I would recommend Ian for painting and carpentry repairs. If matching texturing and faux painting is desired, perhaps getting a sample would be nice to have. Ian was polite, industrious and did a great job cleaning up.

Michael built bookcases on the sides of our fireplace for us. After talking to him about the design we envisioned, he did a wonderful drawing that helped us visualize exactly what they would look like. He's an experienced carpenter and the quality of his work is outstanding. I highly recommend Michael for any of your carpentry needs.

Dustin helped us with two custom projects in our almost 100 year old Bungalow in Congress Park. He remodeled our downstairs bathroom and created and installed custom shelving in our boys' bedroom. He did a wonderful job on both projects. He is friendly, skilled, listened well to our desires while offering appropriate professional advice, communicated well and in a timely manner, demonstrated excellent craftsmanship and execution, and was honest and reasonable. He has a wide variety of experience, so we trusted him with all aspects of our projects: tiling, plumbing, woodworking, electrical, etc. I highly recommend him for large and small projects alike.

The job greatly expanded over time because he did such a fabulous job on the first work order, which was to do all of the construction remediation in a badly flooded basement: drywall repair, painting, replacing damaged floor molding, replacing pad and carpet. I cannot recall the square footage of the basement now, as the house was sold some months ago. Then, I hired him to help get the house fixed up for sale. The house is about 2900 square feet. He painted the entire interior, replaced the carpet, had all the numerous windows cleaned (in and out, including a 450 square foot sunroom with a two story glass ceiling) he fixed all the interior woodwork. In addition to all that he basically oversaw the sale of the remnants of an estate sale while there was no one else there to help me. This was all done with exceptional craftsmanship and timeliness. Even in a very hot real estate market, I honestly believe that the house sold as quickly and for the price it did was due to the work that Joe did. Joe is as honest as the day is long. We have become friends as a result of these many projects and I can truly say that the only good thing that came out of the events leading up to the need for this work to be done was meeting Joe. If you need any of the many services that Joe can provide, you would be foolish not to hire him.

I've worked with Devon on multiple projects at our Longmont residence and we were left with nothing but perfection every time. Custom cabinet built ins, interior trim, closets and more, he is warm, easygoing, timely, great at communicating progress and when we had a design setback, his creativity in overcoming our changed original plans amazed us with an array of new options. Devon is the highly skilled craftsman we've been looking for!! Five stars!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

      Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
