We are in the process of using Victor to replace our fence and he has been one of the best contractors we have worked with. On time, thorough, and clean (even working through some of the extra winter we had this year). He went above and beyond to make sure the foundational aspects of the install were solid (we highly recommend steel posts). He also gave us a great price on an upgrade to metal frames for our gates. The quality of his work is one of the cleanest we have seen and we feel confident that the only portion of the fence we will ever need to replace is the wood when it finally wears out. Thanks Vic.

It's rare that you find a company you are actually excited to review! I can't say enough good things about Sean, Byron and their team. They were so amazing to work with! We gave them several projects and they did an amazing job on each one. We had tile floors put in, a shower redone, and texturing repaired on our walls, and they did each job quickly and wonderfully. My husband and I are so happy with the results. Not only that, but Sean's expertise saved from paying out of pocket a repair that our home owners insurance ended up covering! They treated our home with respect, were tidy with everything, and just overall went above and beyond. If you want a great experience with your home reno projects - HIRE THEM!!!

My wife and I have numerous rental properties and over the years we have had Joe remodel many of these homes from replacing a roof, installing flooring, some electrical, some plumbing, water proofing 3 of my homes and installing sump pumps. Ive had Joe do drywall work and interior painting. Each time Joe was called to complete this work, all I had to do was give him a key or set up time with the tenant and what was needed done and the job was always completed in a professional way. Very knowledgeable in construction work. Never had a complaint about Joe. Thank you Joe for all the work Brian Schreiber

A quandary we homeowners face when we need to hire contractors is finding one whom we can trust at a competitive price. We would like to ease your mind if you are looking for a Painting Contractor. We hired All Painting Plus LLC to paint the entire outside and inside of our newly purchased home (found them here on Thumbtack). They gave us a more than fair bid for the job. They walked through the house & explained in detail what they would do. This far exceeded what other Contractors said they would do. This Company's work ethic and the superb quality of their professional craftsmanship far exceeded anything we could have hoped for. This is a Company with a conscience. We most HIGHLY recommend them.

CCS was amazing to work with. They can do all of your home improvement projects. They tiled all of our bathrooms, fixed our door, repaired a water line, and sodded our grass. Pricing was the best extremely reasonable. We enjoyed working with the CCS team and look forward to working with them on future projects. We highly recommend their work.

Howard is very contentious and did a great job repairing the joists on our deck! He also recommended against a suggestion from the Home Inspector that the new joists be married up to the rotting joists. He said this would give you double the rotting joists! He replaced them instead and I really appreciated his suggestion and candor.

Ralph worked with my husband to install laminate flooring in our bedrooms and began a major kitchen remodel. The work was done quickly and carefully. Ralph is the only person my husband will work with. We look forward to Ralph working on our house again as we finish remodeling projects.

Michael installed our over-sized kitchen sink. We have granite counter tops, and he was the only person willing to cut the granite to make room for our sink without charging an arm and a leg! Michael was extremely polite, cleaned up after himself, and provided quality work and an excellent price. As we continue to renovate our home we look forward to hiring him again!

While the service took a little longer than expected. Brian and his team were very communicative throughout. We bought our home a few months ago and inherited an old dilapidated fence. Our property is now like night and day. Our fence looks amazing and the work was high quality.

Dean was an absolute joy to work with; he listened to my concerns, and offered his experienced opinion which helped a lot! He was always on time, kept me apprised on timelines (was ahead of schedule) and was courteous. I trusted him (and I'm a single Mom) and believe he was very fair. He didn't have creepy sub-contractors to deal with; just him! I am very happy with my tile floors, fence, and backsplash - I get compliments all the time! You WON'T be disappointed, he can do so many things in an extremely professional manner!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
