What a pleasure to work with Christopher! He's such a professional. Like many writers, I'm quite sensitive about sharing my work with others, but Christopher was thorough, offering lots of insight and suggestions for improvement mixed with keen observations and delicate compliments. He clearly knows what he's doing. I hope to collaborate with him again.

Caitlin is awesome to work with. We were co-writers for the Loh Down on Science as well as Managing Editors (MEs) at different times. While she was an ME, she was a great leader and was super innovative and organized. During my term as ME, Caitlin was very professional and always got her work done on time. Although she had two internships and was in graduate school (a full-time job), she always turned in quality work. Furthermore, she was great at working in a team and was always a pleasure to work with.

Laura has been helping me improve on my limited Spanish for about six weeks now, twice a week. My intent is to learn how to hold a better, more complete, conversation as I'm going to Mexico for the winter. We have been meeting at her home. Laura has been creative in her approach, as we go from reading to conversation to word games to reviewing proper grammar. Every one hour lesson has invariably turned into at least 1-1/2 hours as Laura gets caught up in really trying to help me improve with the words and phrases that I'll be using on a daily basis. Laura is patient and knowledgable, and I'm sure that after another 6-8 weeks (for myself, learning a foreign language requires lots of time and persistence) my experience this winter will be much more rewarding and fun. Charlotte edited my latest manuscript, preparing it for publication and adding all the technical details I wouldn't have thought to include. She didn't make blind assumptions about my content, but pointed out areas that might need more clarification and let me do that. Which is what makes a great editor! Laurie Schnebly Campbell,

Incredibly informative and helpful. Margaret provided excellent feedback and was constructive in her editing. My essay was much more cohesive because of her editing, but still allowed my own voice to show through. I would highly recommend her for any writing or editing assistance!

“Amanda has taken my Music Business to the next level.” She worked extremely hard in Designing my Website, creating my logo, Creating & Managing my Social Media pages: (Facebook page, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter accounts) and managing my business email. She worked very hard to create what I envisioned for all my sites. Not only is she very knowledgeable and efficient in her work, but she also offered suggestions and creative ideas time and time again throughout the process of creating my all my pages. I am very impressed with her quality of work , customer care, and meticulous attention to detail. I will surely refer her to any type of business who is looking for a website and social media builder!!! " -Dawane Garey -Against the Grain Music Production

Get the job dine right did a great job on my place every time. I am a slob.

I strongly believe in my clients in the work that they do. I 'm a passionate writer who believes everyone should be heard and the fact that it may help another person or encourage them is excellent and I honor the fact that writers do help people more than they think Writers write what they think, how they feel, what they see or have experienced. At the end of the day they are excellent writers they believe and what they write in the work they put into it and I believe in their work.

**Send me a page or two or your work. I'll edit it for free. That's the best way to pick your writer/editor -- see firsthand what they do and how they do it.** I provide writing, editing, and writing instruction services to businesses, universities, government agencies, and non-profits nationwide. I’ve done work for dozens of marketing firms, Unisys Corporation, U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Air Force, CH2M HILL, Prentice Hall, LexisNexis, HP, Webroot, VMware, and Adobe, and I’ve written and edited corporate, government, technical, and marketing documentation throughout my career. Let’s just say my work has run the gamut. Back in the day, I developed and taught a course in technical writing for Pentagon personnel. I also spent three years teaching courses in academic writing, public speaking, and literature to students at the University of Virginia and three years teaching writing at the University of Colorado, Boulder. I earned a Master of Arts degree in English Literature, Language, and Research from the University of Virginia. My GRE Verbal test score is in the 99th percentile. Why share a GRE score? Because it assesses ability in language usage, grammar, and punctuation. I know my stuff. I live in the grand and gorgeous state of Colorado, and in my free time I work on my novel, travel extensively in the US (47 states and counting), travel as much as possible around the world, and bike around Denver on one of my fabulous cruisers. Unless my bikes have been stolen. They’re stolen a lot.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
