Having met Dr. Anna is one of the best things that's ever happened to me. I had been in therapy for over a decade with various counselors, but now I know the difference between a therapist and a Therapist. She is warm, compassionate and creative, no two sessions are the same, and she seems to have an incredible repertoire of techniques at her disposal. She is always goal-oriented, makes sure that results are really happening, and always explains everything so clearly as you have never heard and never understood before. She has the greatest sense of humor, her academic knowledge is amazing, and her fine-tuned sensitivity boarders on the mystical. Yet she is always funny, down to earth, and real. I've never laughed so much in therapy sessions before! :-) I am so grateful, ... because I am finally discovering what "free" and "happy" really mean!

Therapy with Alison worked for us. It took awhile. There were a few months when nothing seemed to be changing. My wife and I were having the same fights, stuck the same way. I wanted to quit, but my wife insisted and I'm glad she did. Things started to click. The same things Alison had been pointing out to us suddenly made sense at a different level. Maybe we just needed to hear it over and over, or maybe the sessions we were doing got us ready, but suddenly we were able to change. Alison had been assigning us homework, but we rarely did it. When we started doing the homework, our marriage got better faster. But Alison never judged us when we didn't do it. She was always patient. She also saw both sides and helped us look at things instead of blaming one person, as a "dance" we get stuck in.

I have a long history of positive and productive therapy, a lifelong commitment to holistic healing and personal growth and 14 years of 12 step work. While all of those supports have brought me much insight and a robust tool box for a happy and highly functional life; none has provided entire clarity around and subsequent relief from lifelong patterns and blocks I have never been able to access and therefore heal. I came to Lorraine in a state of relative crisis and in a matter of months, found myself leaping forward, addressing and resolving core issues I have struggled with my whole life. Her down to earth, relatable personality and style combined with her profound intuition and considerable expertise as a therapist and healer have offered me the most rapid and deep healing I have ever experienced. There is, with Lorraine, an energetic exchange that can only be experienced not described. I am infinitely grateful to have been referred to her. Nicole N.

Judy was so helpful for me in figuring out strategies to help manage my anxiety. When I began therapy and it felt like many aspects of my life were falling apart, but a year of working together, so many things have improved. She also helped me find my voice in my relationship - something I’m incredibly proud of.

I have been a patient of Sheri's for the past decade, attending regular sessions as well as a group therapy program. In that time, my therapy with Sheri has given me the tools I need not to just survive, but to thrive. She is empathetic, kind, intelligent and competent - an all around exceptional therapist. She has been in the trenches for many years, working with people who have faced the worst of circumstances, and she bears our suffering admirably and in the process diminishes the potency of those experiences. Sheri also empowers us to help ourselves, frequently recommending books, movies, healers, and the like. To those out there in need of help, I hope you, too, find your way to Sheri.

Dan Minuchin is an outstanding family therapist, mental health consultant, trainer, teacher and clinical supervisor. I have had the fortune of working with him and observing him in all of these roles over the past several years. I initially worked with Dan about 10 years ago when I was a supervisor at agency that provided family therapy and services to families struggling with adolescents and families involved in the juvenile justice and child welfare systems. In this setting, he provided case consultation, supervision, and training to a team of social workers and family therapists. This model included live supervision and the use of a one way mirror. Dan would also accompany therapists on home visits to provide live consultations in the family's home. I later became a director of another similar family service program. I was able to hire Dan to provide Structural Family Therapy training to my entire clinical staff, as well as consultation, individual and group clinical supervision. His guidance and training was very well received by my staff and their skills as family therapists improved significantly. Dan is really a master trainer and has worked as a family therapist, teacher and trainer for several decades. He has an incredibly diverse personal and professional background and experience working with families of all walks of life. He is sensitive and well informed of the needs and experiences of families of color, immigrant families, LGBTQ families, blended families, Jewish Orthodox families, families struggling with substance abuse and mental illness, delinquent teens, children with special needs, and families dealing with divorce, loss and separation. I have referred many families to Dan and I feel confident that he is able to work with the most complex families of all backgrounds. Dan is thoughtful and empathic and has very high ethical standards. His structural and strategic approach to addressing problems is highly effective and families often will see progress in a short amount of time. I am a family therapist and clinician as well, and Dan has provided me with outstanding clinical supervision and guidance and has been instrumental in my own professional growth as a therapist and clinical supervisor.

I really appreciate all the help Walesca has provided my family. When I lost my mother in 2013, my then 6 year old, took the loss pretty bad. I was so lucky to come across the bereavement services offered by Walesca. Through group therapy, my son was able to talk about his loss and share with other children experiencing the same. I also decided to join a bereavement support group for adults moderated by Walesca. I learned how to cope and understand my grief in a supportive environment. At the same time, I also learned how to be supportive to my son. I highly recommend Walesca and her amazing services.

Admittedly I was a bit skeptical before trying QHHT, not because I had any doubts about the wonderful woman who would be working on me , Doreen Devore, but because I am a yoga and meditation teacher and very holistic man and have tried seemingly every different treatment modality out there in order to find some semblance of inner peace , get off my own case, and establish increased solitude in my daily existence. I saw Doreen after a break-up of a quite long relationship and was still in the grieving phase. I am by nature inherently anxious, and thus am prescribed beta-blockers to keep my adrenalin from rising too often and Valium for panic-attacks. I also suffered from intermittent back pain as a result of a lumbar disc herniation over four years ago that still affected my alignment and had a negative impact on the quality and duration of my sleep. I regularly frequented chiropractors, acupuncturists, massage therapists, my shrink , Reiki healers and even know a couple of shamans who specialize in soul retrieval and do a lot of chanting and drumming in their healing sessions. None of this could have prepared me for the eye-opening, cathartic, trippy experience Doreen was about to guide me through. In advance I wrote down a clear list of questions I would like answered and Doreen told me she would do her best to commune with whatever powers that be to seek out the answers. I remember the session vaguely, but was in an almost trance-like state as Doreen took me back and spoke to me in past incarnations or lives and even looked ahead to my future , telling me that many of my goals would eventually be attained and how it would occur. She told me things about my life nobody had any business knowing or had been told before. She asked the higher-ups to lessen the pain in my back and my anxiety inducing OCD symptoms. Upon the cessation of our evening session I left in a blissful state , feeling very floaty yet contemplative , yet also revitalized. My ex-girlfriend no longer harbored any place in the forefront of my consciousness, my posture seemingly improved and my back pain diminished substantially and I slept like a baby all after night one. Since then I have been a more keen observer of opportunity in my life and have gotten four new yoga teaching jobs since I saw her less than one month ago. Furthermore, my moods are more stable as I'm less anxious, have decreased the dose of my beta-blockers and now just keep the Valium in my medicine cabinet in case of emergency. My yoga practice, sex life, day-to-day level of happiness and optimism regarding the future have all experienced a dramatic shift for the better. I can not explain the efficacy of this experience to enough people and all it required was a single session in Doreen's comforting hands. She is truly an expert at QHHT and someone I would highly recommend to friends and family alike. Thank you Doreen for helping me get many of the things that were ailing me in life back in order. One love. Om Shantih!

I was recommended to Stephanie O'Sullivan for an irrational fear of dogs I have....had. Stephanie worked with me over a few long months to introduce me to some dogs that at previous times, would have scared me to the point of tears. But her patience and reassurance helped put me at ease. Now when I walk I don't break down if there is a dog around me. I even met her Rottweiler and with assistance, was able to touch and even play with him.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

    • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
    • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
    • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
    • Overcoming addictions.
    • Managing chronic illness.
    • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

    • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
    • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
    • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
    • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
    • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
    • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
    • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
    • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
    • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
    • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
    • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
    • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
    • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
    • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
    • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
    • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
    • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
    • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
    • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

    How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
