Walter came to repair a window for me over the weekend when I could not find any other company open. He communicated very clearly what needed to be done. He did a very neat job and left the premises clean. He was very polite and friendly too. The price was reasonable.

Marty Kein's work is outstanding. He is a very professional person and very easy to work with. He worked for me on two occasions lasting about four months in total. His work involved renovating my kitchen, two bathrooms and an attached garage. He installed three new windows and one door. He also installed oak flooring in my family room. You can depend on Marty. He is totally honest and wants to please you by doing a very professional and thorough job.

I gave him the task of updating my 1980's home. I needed my master bathroom completely remodeled. He remodeled my master bedroom. Removed a skylight that was leaking and closed up the roof and repaired my ceiling. Removed the fireplace and gave me a linen closet. Ripped up the carpet and installed a new hardwood flood. Painted the bedroom. .My kitchen and dinning room needed to be completely gutted, the wall removed between the rooms and combined into one large room with an island. The cabinets needed to be stripped and refinished. He removed the soffit and added crown molding on the top of the cabinets. Took the refrigerator and pantry cabinet and installed them in the wall to enlarge the kitchen even more. He even changed the entrance from the hallway into the kitchen/dinning from squared off ceiling to an archway which gave the look of a new addition to the home. He knocked out the window in the dinning room and replaced it with a sliding glass door. Built a large back deck for entertaining. Built a gazebo right next the the deck so that I can just walk onto the deck and into the hot tub in the gazebo. Poured a concrete slab. Then installed a hot tub. It looks like a new home throughout. My family and friends would walk into my home and their mouth would just drop open in disbelief. It doesn't even look like the same home. His attention to detail reflects the years of experience this man has in carpentry. When you explain what changes you would like to do to a home. He can tell you what will work and what won't. He brought to my attention that the electrical wiring was not done correctly when my home was built. So I had him correct that as well. Hiring Jacques to update my home was the best decision I ever made. Spending the money for updating and repairing my home was well spent. My home is worth a lot more thanks to Jacques. I would highly recommend him for any size job. He is a one man operation, but gets the job done like a whole crew of men. He constantly keeps the job site clean so the dust is minimal. I would not hesitate to hire this man. He is professional, knows what he is doing and can be trusted with your home.

Go with Chris, he does great work. He spent time doing the job right and didn’t cut any corners. I used him to fix a leak on my chimney and replace the flashing. It turned out great. Planning to use him to replace windows and siding next.

Luther swapped out two stained glass windows for plain windows for us. Super nice guy, knows what he's doing. Small miscommunication regarding timing but easily resolved. We're now talking to him about doing additional projects around the house.

I do not even know where to start. If Bruce lived in a different time he would have been a Renaissance man. He possesses a masterful blend of artistry and intellect. The first project he did for us was to redo a simple laundry room. This entailed making templates and installing granite for a counter with a sink and a making a folding table/counter. He had to repair some sheet rock and repaint the room. The results were impressive. The second job he did was design and build a workbench for my art studio. His architectural renderings were impressive. He measured the length of my arms to insure I was able to reach the peg board behind the work bench. He thought to install a length of electrical outlets beneath the lip of the bench. The side drawers are easily opened and closed and the paper trays are large enough to hold my watercolor paper. He is extremely meticulous and his work shows this. He installed glass doors in the basement studio to allow more light to enter the area. When this wasn't sufficient, he cut through the concrete and installed a window (with molding and a sill). His masterpiece was the deck he built for us. With Bruce's skill and our artistic input he produced a showpiece deck. The three tiered deck allows for minimal visual obstruction of the woods below. He installed tiny lights on the stairs to make them safer in the evening. He thought of these. He made a portion of the deck curved to provide harmony with the landscaping. Again, his renderings were precise and impressive. He laid everything out carefully and was always thinking ahead. Our deck is magnificent. He handled all the paperwork for the permits as well. On a smaller scale Bruce hung paintings, our TV, glass doors leading to a bonus room, fixed all our leaky faucets and provided names when we needed a generator and a water softening system installed. Bruce is one of a kind in that he is masterful in so many areas and knows when to get a consult. He is prompt and ready to work hard. He put in very long hours, cleaned up and just did amazing work. I still look forward to having him finish an upstairs loft, a bathroom in our studio and build a space for a china hutch. I feel so fortunate that we found Bruce and would give him the highest of recommendations. He really is a Master of many things! He is also very easy to talk to and to work with.

I worked directly with Scott and Weathertite for a variety of work at various condominiums that I was a property manager of for fifteen years. Roofing and gutter replacement mostly but also siding repairs, and window replacement too. Never a problem and always complete satisfaction. Additionally, Weathertite installed a new roof and gutters for me personally four years ago. Phil G, Oakville, CT

For U Builders replaced 7 basement windows for us. The introduction/quote visit was excellent. Really nice folks! Follow up was good. Brandon stayed on top of our order and kept us informed. Install was great. Leon tailored the trim to the space so it wasn't a "one size fits all" install. Very much appreciate that - and they were done earlier in the day than we expected. This would be a 5 star review if the time between the initial appointment and the installation hadn't been over 6 weeks. We understand the windows come from PA, and there was the Thanksgiving holiday in there, but that's twice as long as unexpected/were told.

Great experience. They were quick to schedule a walk through to look at a broken window pane and were available the next day to come with the correct size glass and replace it. The work was done quickly and cleanly and looks great. I would use them again in a heartbeat.

We ordered new windows/install and new garage door with Marc the first week of November. Here it almost March and the projects are finally finished. Garage door just went in this week and windows a few days before Xmas. While he was fair in price and I believe he did a good job, it took far too long and we were strung along with a lot of poor excuses.

We had an incident where one of our basement windows had broken. Victor came to the house the next day to measure the three windows for replacement (we decided now was the time to replace them all). That evening we had an estimate emailed to us, and the pricing was good. Victor ordered the windows, and the day they came in he called to schedule installation for the next day. He was on time, quick, and the work is very high quality. After installation he walked us through opening the windows, showing the completed work, and gave us recommendations regarding the rain/snow covers we had over the windows. We have plans for the basement which includes finishing it, update flooring, etc and plan to work with Victor for that as well.

My husband and I hired Mike Goodman to install a replacement picture window, expand a doorway to an interior room, mount our flat screen television and replace a door and trim to our attic stairway. Mike was also able to recommend an electrician to install recessed lighting in our living room and playroom, as well as, install outside lighting. Mike did a great job on the carpentry work and oversaw the electrician work. He made sure that we were satisfied with the completed work. He provided reasonable pricing and we will definitely be hiring him again for future upgrades in our home.

Nescor to replace windows on upstairs, and down. I, of course ,had tons of questions and would cal the rep over and over .. he took it all in stride. Man of patience he was ! Trust me I'm no cakewalk. The job day > They arrived on time (which I wish I could say about the cable company. The job worked out as scheduled, and yes the weather helped. Left no mess. They returned for a follow up visit and fixed up a few items. Followed up to make sure that we were satisfied. I would say if you need windows based on my experience, I would recommend Nescor.

A friend of mine had used Ruiz Landscaping to do some landscaping and I saw the work and contacted them. They called back that day and came out on the same day to look at what I needed done. They were professional, very personable and attentive to what I was asking and gave great suggestions and gave me the quote that day. I had a lot of yard to clean up and I was very pleased of the results. I have more to do and when I'm ready I will certainly hire them again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
