This was my first time hiring Bob. He responded quickly to my quote request and when I decided to hire him for a small outdoor job I had he called me right away to confirm the day and time. Bob showed up right on time to do my job and quickly diagnosed the problem with my fence. He called me after I left for work to let me know the scope of the job was going to be a little bigger before he proceeded, which I appreciated. He did an excellent job and his price was definitely reasonable in my opinion. i appreciate that he was able to come out quickly and do my repairs, even though it wasn't a huge job. Some handymen won't even call you back if it isn't a big job. Next spring I plan to hire Bob to do some more fix-its around my house. As a woman, it's good to have a reliable, friendly handyman who knows what he's doing!

Alby and his team were nothing short of spectacular. After putting in a request, Alby contacted us immediately and came out to see our site the next day. He was able to give us a quote on the spot and the next day we had a signed contract. He promised to slot us into his schedule in order to get the work done to meet our very tight timeline. He knew this was important to us and made it happen as promised, in fact he finished ahead of schedule even after we asked him to add some additional scope. While the work was being performed Alby was very communicative and was the perfect balance between self-sufficient and collaborative - he knew when to make decisions on his own and when our input was needed. The final product was amazing - extremely well done work and we could not be happier with our patio and fence. Alby and team exceeded expectations and we are going to use them again for future masonry work at our house. Would recommend them to anyone.

This is a reference for Mr. Steiner and the wonderful, competent carpenter work, patio and fence work he has performed for us in our home. Mr. Steiner was organized, on time and worked within our budget for the project. The completed porch exceeded our expectations. His input answered many of our questions and concerns as the project got under way. We since have had him in for many other projects and each time he has brought wonderful insight to the project and has accomplished amazing things in our home and patios. We would certainly recommend Mr. Steiner for any project. He is our go to person when we want it done right, on time and in budget. Sincerely Mary Wells 203-484-2226 August 10, 2014

We are so pleased with the work done at our home by Allan Odell. We hired Allan to redo our front walkway, and his work exceeded our expectations. From the very beginning of the project he was very responsive, and explained everything about the project in detail. He responded to all of our questions, and advised us on the best option to fit within our budget but not sacrificing quality or aesthetics. We ended up with a concrete walkway with a paver border, and we couldn't be happier. We highly recommend Allan for all of your masonry needs.

My mother's porch was collapsing and we needed to find someone fast to fix it. A family member recommended Steve from Steve's Handyman and Paint Services. He fixed the porch and made it so sturdy it was like new and his price was very reasonable. My mother's neighbor loved the work he did so she decided to hire him to fix a water leak and build a fence between the two properties. The leak was fixed at a fraction of the price she was quoted by other contractors and the fence he built was so beautiful and not like any other we have seen. It went from a boring old fence to this beautifully designed, gorgeous fence that we love. We then decided that we wanted to hire him to paint my mother's house since the quality of his work was impeccable. He gave us a quote, that was below other contractors, so we decided to give him the job. When he was done, we were all in shock and my mother was so pleased. The house was 55 years old and looked new when the job was complete. Steve also has lots of ideas and great suggestions on how to improve the look of whatever he is working on. We highly recommend Steve for any job. He is very competent, detail oriented and knowledgeable. Myself, my family and my friends will continue to use Steve for all our repair/remodeling needs. He is now like part of our family. Sincerely, Josephine M. & Paul & Therese V.

Alex has done several home improvement projects at my home in Avon. He has installed a new fence around my back yard, installed new flooring in my family room and rec-room, and also resurfaced my fireplace in my family room with stone veneer. His work was completed on schedule and he was very maticulous. His prices are fair and very competitive. I would highly recommend Alex and his company Five Star Contracting and Construction.

Chester was more than just professional, he's a true craftsman who is committed and knowledgable about a range of projects. I always thought of a fences as just a necessity in the yard, but he built one that actually improves the space with its design and functionality. Guests regularly comment about the beauty and craftsmanship that's apparent in all his work. He addresses challenges and special considerations thoughtfully and does what it takes to finishes on time. We are thrilled with the fence he built and would hire him again in a second.

Jerry was fantastic, his crew was good and clean. He put up 550 feet of fence and 3 gates . I asked Him to please tuck it right to the ground so my beagles won't get out. Well, it came out perfect . I would highly recommend him

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

    • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
    • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
    • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
    • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
    • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
    • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

    • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
    • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
    • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
    • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
    • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
    • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
    • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
    • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
