I hired Debbie to cook a meal for my husband's birthday which was on a week night after a long tiring day for both of us. Debbie was very helpful around menu choices and also very flexible as I asked her to deliver the meal rather than cook in our home because we would be home on the later side. She cooked us a very delicious and healthy meal, exactly what we wanted. We had a lovely kale salad, perfectly cooked lamb chops over spinach and a side of risotto. Debbie is also a nutritionist and life coach and is also very knowledgable about how to use food as a way to respond to problematic health conditions such as auto-immune diseases. I would highly recommend her. She is also more reasonably priced than the other private chefs in the area.

Elizabeth is an outstanding nutritionist and trainer. I am involved in her semi-private classes and she conducts each class with the purpose of strengthening the body from within- keeping in mind the individual needs of everyone. She explains as she trains and answers any questions. As a nutritionist she is extremely knowledgeable and keeps current with new research based information. I have been with BodySmart for 3 years, and will continue for many more.

Mara is the reason for my success. I have lost over 20 pounds in about 6 weeks because of her. Before working with Mara I was struggling to change my lifestyle to a healthier lifestyle. In the past I never had to watch what I ate, and one day I realized I blew up! I didn’t know what to do or where to turn. When I saw my gym offered the services of a nutritionist I jumped on it. Mara provided me with a meal plan, a grocery list, weekly consultations and weight-ins. Within my first week I lost 4lbs and have been loosing ever since! Mara has pushed me to be the best me that I can. I would have never lost the weight I have without her. She has taught me so much about the food I was eating verses the food I eat now. She would look at every one of my meals and let me know when I was doing great and also let me know when I wasn’t. She would touch base with me almost everyday and became my own personal cheerleader. Because of her my confidence in myself is back. Mara has opened my eyes to a new lifestyle that I will take with me the rest of my life. I was struggling for 3 years to lose weight and become healthy, working with Mara that happened in just 6 weeks! Mara has taught me that anything is possible. She is the sweetest person I have ever met. From our first meeting she made me feel beyond comfortable with her. I can not thank her enough for believing in me, pushing me and staying by my side every step of the way. I would recommend Mara to anyone out there who is looking to begin a healthy lifestyle and/or lose weight.

I was a client of Sue Kyhn's when she was working with the endocrinologist that was helping me to kick start my metabolism. Sue is very knowledgeable, has a masters degree in Human Nutrition and over 20 years experience as a Nutritionist. She's also a college educator and experienced in Integrative Health; that also concentrates on functional medicine and nutrition protocols. Sue is extremely patient, provided me with careful and detailed advice and never rushed my appointment. I highly valued her guidance not only because of her years in Nutrition but also for her ability to translate scientific lingo, to laymen's terms, making it much easier for me to find the right nutritional products. Her guidance has given me a life-long nutrition adjustment that I am still applying to this day. ~Linda A.

Erica has been great from the moment we had our first meeting. We are meeting for an hour twice a week and after our initial workout session, I am feeling the positive effects of her training...OUCH...(but it's all to help better my health). She is extremely personable and punctual. She is providing me with tips on bettering my nutrition and is polite yet tactful when it comes to working out which is exactly what I need to feel more motivated.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a nutritionist cost?

A nutritionist provides expertise and guidance to help clients with all diet-related health matters, including losing weight, gaining muscle, improving their sports performance, and managing diabetes or high cholesterol. Nutritionists can help people learn to follow special diets in a healthy way, such as becoming vegetarian or vegan or developing a low-sodium or gluten-free eating plan. The average national cost of a nutritionist is $60 to $100. Nutritionists often require an initial consultation with a new client, during which they’ll take a medical history, assess the client’s nutritional needs, and determine the best course of action; this first meeting usually averages $100-$120 for a 45-minute to 90-minute consultation. Subsequent nutritional counseling sessions generally cost less, ranging from an average of $45 for a half-hour session to $60-$90 for a one-hour session. Like many professional service providers, nutritionists may offer discounts through package pricing. For instance, a one-month package with two sessions and email support costs an average of $190; a three-month package with three sessions and email support costs an average of $360; and a six-month package with six sessions and email support costs an average of $540.

Are nutritionists covered by health insurance?

Nutrition counseling can be a critical component of good health care, especially for people recently diagnosed with diabetes or high cholesterol who need to adhere to a specific diet. People also meet with nutritionists for help developing a healthy vegetarian or vegan diet, developing an eating plan to lose weight or gain muscle, or improving their sports performance by changing their diet. Nutritionists may be covered by health insurance depending on your reason for meeting with them. Nutrition counseling is more likely to be covered if it is part of a doctor-prescribed treatment for a particular medical condition, such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure or coronary heart disease. For example, Medicare covers medical nutrition therapy services only for people diagnosed with diabetes or kidney disease, as long as they get a referral from their doctor. Also, insurance providers more often cover nutrition visits if the patient has been referred to a registered dietitian within the carrier’s network of providers. Insurance plans vary greatly, so research your benefits before visiting a nutritionist.
