My passion and enthusiasm for music is why I do what I do. I get great pleasure out of sharing it with others. Everything. I love what I do and want to do this for the rest of my life. Performing is certainly where I am at home and enjoy every minute of it. Lately though I have been getting so much satisfaction from watching my students (many that touched a guitar for the very first time at our first lesson) growing in their ability and confidence. It is inspiring to me to watch this on a weekly basis because it reminds me to keep pushing myself to get better as well. No matter how long you have been playing an instrument there is an absolutely endless amount improvement that can be made. Seeing the look of pride in a students face when they can tell they are getting better is about as rewarding as any part of this business.

    Jackson Leas Music

    (10 reviews)

My music lessons provide the student with a wide variety of tools and knowledge to learn a new instrument or build upon their own musicianship to take their skill and appreciation of music to the next level. The student/parent's goals my primary focus. I make sure my student understands the music theory behind what they are playing as well, and if the student/parent does not know what their goals are, I focus my approach on a general all-encompassing method that provides the student with the skills they need to achieve their future musical goals. The most important aspect, however, is to enjoy playing music, and I always keep this in mind when teaching. Music is my passion and teaching others to tap into their own potential musical genius truly is a joy. It feels like I am doing a service to my students and to the world at large by teaching music to the young and old.

    Spinal Chord

    (5 reviews)

I have more than 30 years of experience as a professional musician and have taught guitar for nearly 25. I have performed with bands up and down the East Coast, playing classic rock, blues, country, pop, oldies, hard rock, thrash and metal. My versatility is a bonus for potential students who may want to focus on the nuances of a particular style of music. Rest assured, I have played them all! I specialize in the unorthodox method of "ear training," which develops the student's aural ability to identify pitches, intervals, melodies, chords, rhythm, and other basic musical elements. Students learn to "hear" the characteristic sound of a chord while learning chord progressions, to hear how chords relate to one another in the context of a piece of music, breaking them down into smaller, more easily identifiable subpatterns. The application of these skills is akin to taking dictation in written/spoken language. I was considered a child prodigy when I started playing guitar, and there is something very special about passing the skill along to young people. I love teaching adults, too, because they are very earnest in their desire to learn. What do I enjoy about what I do? Nearly everything. Why do I enjoy it? I realize that I'm very lucky to enjoy what I do, so I'm not going to question why!

I have lots of reviews on different sites that are all positive. It seems people find I listen and teach well. That I'm easy to work with and I can make learning the guitar fun. In some ways I guess I'm overqualified - I've been in over 50 bands in over 40 years. I've studied music, worked in recording studios, and done sound for bands. I even repair guitars in my in-house repair shop. There isn't much my students want to know about that I haven't done quite a lot of in my life. Having worked in industry teaching, and having taught other things besides music, I've learned the key is to listen closely and then work hard to make concepts simple when explaining them. I have a lot of fun teaching my students and we all feel like friends. Enjoying what I do is pretty infectious. I love teaching and sharing something I know that makes other people feel good. I love enabling others to achieve their goals. I love helping others by sharing anything I know, especially if others have been unable to explain it to my student. I love "watching the lights come on!"

What do you love about your job?

I absolutely love everything about my job. Music has always been my passion. I decided a few years ago that even if it meant making less money than I was accustomed to, I would devote my career to music. It has paid off in spades as I am the happiest I have ever been and turned my passion into a rewarding business. It really is sometimes surreal to think about where my life is now and where it is going. Teaching is the most rewarding part of all. Seeing my students realize their own potential and make progress in front of my eyes is truly a blessing.

What or who inspired you to start your own business?

I worked my way through college as a bartender in Baltimore. Though the pay was good, I never felt any fulfillment. I always knew that I wanted to be involved in music, but it took the encouragement of some very kind local musicians to give me the confidence to take a big step forward. I have always known that I would never be truly fulfilled working for someone else and that I would eventually run my own business. Once I started playing music in bars and teaching lessons, I knew I had found my career. I believe that when you are unrelentingly passionate about something, you cannot fail.
