Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who cleans area rugs?

Like your carpets, area rugs should ideally be cleaned at least once a year to remove dust and dirt and help them last longer. In general, carpet cleaning professionals also clean area rugs. Some rug cleaners bring their cleaning equipment to your home, while others remove your area rugs and clean them at their facilities. Either way, the rug should be cleaned with the solution most appropriate to its specific fabric and construction. It should also be completely dry before you return it to the floor.

Is it worth getting rugs professionally cleaned?

It is worth the money to get rugs professionally cleaned if they’re fragile, have tough-to-remove stains or you don’t know how to clean them. When in doubt, contact a pro to clean your rugs.

How often should you clean your rugs?

This depends on your rug’s condition — and the conditions in your home. If your rug is located in a high-traffic area like a mudroom, entryway or hallway, you may need to clean it more often. Families with small children or pets should clean their rugs more often as well. Those with allergies should also clean their rugs more often, as should those who wear their shoes inside.

What is the best way to clean a Persian rug?

Cleaning a Persian rug often requires utilizing a vacuum, rug shampoo, water, a brush or sponge and bucket. However, be careful of these common DIY mishaps:

  • Using the wrong shampoo or cleaning solution
  • Not using enough water (or using too much)
  • Cleaning your rug too often

To ensure you don’t accidentally ruin your rug, you might want to consider hiring a professional cleaner with plenty of experience and expertise.

How much does it cost to clean a rug?

Area rugs are typically found in high-traffic areas of the home, like hallways and entryways, so they collect more dirt and stains than simple vacuuming can handle. Similar to carpet cleaning, professionals can come to your home to deep-clean your area rugs. The national average cost for rug cleaning ranges from $80 to $120, but may be higher or lower depending on the rug’s size and fiber type. Rug cleaners generally charge by the square foot; for example, a standard 8-foot by 10-foot rug costs an average of $100 to clean. Natural fiber rugs, such as wool or silk, are usually more expensive to have cleaned than synthetic rugs. A carpeting cleaning company may charge on average $1.50 per square foot to clean a synthetic rug, $2 per square foot for a wool rug, and $3 per square foot for a silk rug. Some delicate rugs need to be washed by hand, which increases the price. Carpet cleaning companies often offer additional services, such as removing odors or applying moth deterrent, which can add 20 cents to 25 cents per square foot.

How much does it cost to clean an area rug?

Whether your pet had an accident, the party got too wild, or your kids can’t control their juice boxes — we all need rug cleaning from time to time. In fact, even if you don’t have a spill or spot, it’s wise to have your area rug cleaned approximately once a year to keep the rug fibers in good health. In general, rug cleaning prices depend on the square footage of the rug, what the rug is made of, whether any repairs are needed, and whether you require the pro to travel to your location or provide pickup and drop-off services. Nationally, average area rug cleaning prices range from $80 to $120.

Wool and silk area rugs typically cost more to clean than rugs made from synthetic fibers because the more delicate materials take more care and may require specialized cleaning fluids. For example, a synthetic rug may cost $1.50 per square foot to clean; a wool, cotton, or chiffon rug could be $2 per square foot; and a silk or Navajo wool rug could cost $3 per square foot. The two most common rug cleaning methods are steam and chemical cleaning. The costs for the two methods are often the same, although a steam-cleaned rug will take longer to dry due to the moisture. If your area rug needs odor removal, moth deterrent, or hand washing, there will be additional charges.

I had a very dirty, but high quality rug that I contacted Mica for in-home cleaning. He arrived on time and was very honest that the condition of the rug wouldn’t see any worthwhile results from the in-home service. I appreciated the honesty and opted for the service to take the rug to a warehouse for cleaning. The rug came back within a week, on the early side of the timeframe quoted. It looks very nice now and will have a new life in the house because of this.

Green Mop responded promptly, and provided an estimate. But the payment was requested up front. I had to negotiate to pay 50% deposit and remainder on completion. Crew of 2 arrived on time. Polite. Cleaned area rugs. Dog odor was removed. But fringe on rugs is still dirty. Overall service was good. Reasonably priced. Probably hire again.

Great work! Had a 6x9 light colored nylon rug cleaned that has definitely seen it’s fair share of abuse. Mica was very upfront and honest that not all stains might come out of the rug (damn cranberry juice) which we were okay with - It’s carpet cleaning not magic. Turned out great though! Very satisfied with Mica’s work. Before and after photos speak for themselves.

My apartment flooded and I needed someone to come disinfect my floor and rugs. Kenny saved the day! I contacted him at around 8pm and he came at 9am the next day. He was right on time and came in and disinfected the whole floor of the apartment and steam cleaned my three rugs. He also mopped my apartment. He was efficient, super nice, and thorough. Very impressed and thankful- would definitely recommend!!! Thanks Kenny :)

I have a beautiful, small wool area rug that had gotten quite dirty from being in a main area. The guys showed up promptly and were very professional. The cleaning itself was fast and effective. I was surprised since this wasn't a speciality stain service but it got out a ton of pet fur and all but the oldest and worst stains. Very satisfied.

I did not have a great experience with Mica Carpet Cleaning. I reached out to Mica and confirmed a $200.00 price point to clean 5 area rugs and basement carpet. I thought it was a very competitive price so I scheduled the appointment. Unfortunately, Mica’s partner Eliran who actially completed the cleaning did not honor the pricing and immediately quoted $400.00 for the service. I informed him that was not the agreed upon price and than he proceeded to lower price to $350.00. I have family arriving from out of town tomorrow so I needed the cleaning today. Mica’s partner Eliran from Elite Air Duct & Carpet Cleaning charged for a deep cleaning with enzyme for pet accidents. The service was completed but I didn’t enjoy the experience. It’s best for all parties involved to understand the agreed upon pricing. Once everyone understands the agreed upon pricing than you can proceed with selling additional offers. I’m sharing my experience in hopes that new customers have a better experience moving forward.
