We had a great experience with Mike and his helper Dave. I had been forgotten by another moving company and had to find someone last minute. Adelphia movers came, although the guys had been on a couple previous moves, the found time later on and delt with my awful stairs.

Wow! These guys were amazing! My original movers cancelled last minute (8pm on moving night) on me but when I got in contact with Lanre he had a three man crew at my place at 10pm that night!! The guys worked fast and were very friendly and professional. I couldn't have been more pleased with the service. The most incredible thing was I had been searching everywhere that day for money that I could not find. The guys showed up to the unloading location with the money I had lost. It's hard to find such honest people! Thank you so much Lanre you are a hero!!!

The guys spent an hour and 15 min just trying to open my PODS container that was stuck...they didn't seem annoyed by it at all, and I felt so badly for them. They were happy, friendly, and got the job done quickly and efficiently.

Those guys were great! The movers I had set up called and cancelled the day before I had to be out of my apartment. I called these guys and they were there the next day! The movers were super laid back and pretty funny. I've never actually had fun moving before! Every thing went smoothly and it was enjoyable to boot. I'd hire them again any day.

Excellent communication. Very professional and friendly staff who made the move in Philadelphia easy. I would highly recommend ( I am hard to impress). After a long day.....the movers asked, "before we leave, is there any piece of furniture we could reposition for you." Very pleased with the whole experience and would hire again.

I hired JKR Services for a move with only a few days notice. I have moved many times in my life and I would say they are some of the best movers I have ever worked with. The fastest, most efficient, and more importantly, the most careful. Not one thing was chipped or broken. James and his crew showed up early, and immediately set to work taking apart furniture and "wrapping" the more fragile vintage pieces and television. They used plenty of blankets, secured the items carefully and were pleasant and fun to work with. Once the stuff arrived, they quickly set it up and moved some other furniture around at my request. They also performed some handyman duties for me, taking down shelves and helping me wrap them to move to another home. I would definitely use JKR Services again and I highly recommend them.

OUTSTANDING!!! I was lucky enough to find Jeff at the last minute as my move came up very suddenly (the weekend of Labor Day). I did a lot of research and was alarmed by what I read about how moving companies handle you and your stuff. Speaking with Jeff helped to ease my nervousness. We spoke a few times on the phone and via email, he was readily available to discuss any concerns I had. The day of the move they were there before me ready and waiting, got to work immediately and had my stuff packed safely and neatly in the truck in no time. The unloading process proved much the same - again reaching the destination before me and making short order of moving me into my new place. They even put my furniture together! Jeff takes pride in his work and his staff and that shows. To anyone considering hiring him - DO NOT HESITATE - he is worth his weight in gold. If you want a smooth painless process give him a call. Thanks for making my move so very easy!

Jide was professional and knowledgeable during the initial walk through of my current home. He provided a flat rate quote and assured me that all my belongings would be moved safely. He and his team arrived promptly and worked tirelessly for 8 hours, with a lunch break on premises. They provided materials for wrapping furniture to prevent any damage. Their attitude was positive and they were all respectful, of my furniture and of my friends and family who were helping me gather last minute items. I highly recommend Moving Hands to anyone, whether a small job, or an entire 3 story home like mine.

I called On-Demand Movers the day before I had to move (not my choice). Lanre had his men there the next day and I had no complaints or problems with them. My original mover, Amish, backed out at the last minute leaving me in a bind. On-Demand was local so I gave them a call. Luckily they could do it, last minute. They moved me to a storage unit & I will definitely call them again when my home is ready, hopefully not at the last minute again. Thanks Lanre and On-Demand.

Michael Todd personifies the meaning of a pro ~ he was timely, knowledgeable, and most importantly patient. I was a few minutes late getting home and I was pleasantly surprised to meet a nice smile instead of a display of annoyance. My bench was assembled perfectly and fast. I will definitely call on this pro, Michael Todd again.

Our movers didn't show up at the last minute, so we found the contact information for First Class Moving and they were there in 30 minutes. Frank and Dominic are a great team and were very polite, professional, and worked efficiently. I was actually surprised at how they were able to get everything in and out so quickly and easily. First Class Moving not only saved the day for us but exceeded our expectations. Highly recommended for your next move!

We had a terrible experience on a previous move and were hesitant to move with a small moving company. We did some research and Amerapex had a 5 star rating so decided to book our move with them. By far the best move we've ever had. They took care of everything. They showed up on time, helped pack some last minute stuff and were so friendly and professional. Highly recommend!!

Carl was a lifesaver! He not only single-handedly moved a large, heavy piece of fitness equipment for me (he’s very strong!), but he also kindly agreed to move a large number of unexpected additional items at the last minute. He is 100% professional, responsive to emails, kind, calm and a good person who genuinely enjoys helping people. I can’t recommend him highly enough!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
