Your burning questions: answered

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Give clear instructions per the calendar for the business. I was confirmed for a move with a specific time and then the company told me the night before my move that they had another move. They wouldnt be able to get to me until the 12:00 or 1:00 pm in the afternoon. So disappointing.

Manager Jose saved the day for us! We had a last minute cancellation from another moving company and late at night Jose was able to coordinate a truck for the following morning to get the contents of our home into storage. We loved their service so much that we booked them to move us out of storage into our new home. And again, they were incredible! If you are in Central Florida and considering a moving company, look no further. Dynamic Solutions offers the flexibility and the service to make your move easy!

I booked a 3 hour moving with you all from 1pm-4pm for 1/14/2017, the movers finished an hour early, (1pm-2:40pm) I was still charged as if I got the whole 3 hours of moving. When I asked Terell (I believe is his name) he responded and said I have to pay that because it's the minimum. When I spoke with Melanie while booking the move, I was told that if the movers finished early I am only charged for the amount of time I used. I also reached out to Melanie after the movers were finished to notify her that my parents discovered damage done to their walls and she said it will be investigated and the Manager for investigation will be contacting me. I have yet to hear from anyone from the company.

Tony and his helper did a fantastic job loading our 26 foot moving truck. They worked hard the entire time and treated us and our belongings with respect. They were also the most reasonably priced movers.

College Movers is as it sounds. Except they may or may not be in college and that’s not the point. The service is acceptable but not monumental in that the movers (laborers) are generally not really experienced or in the packing and loading logistics of a large home. If you are even slightly disorganized or perhaps having to move suddenly, then it’s to be understood that the help you receive will be dependent upon how much pre organizing and pre packing you do ahead of moving day. If you have lived in your home for more than 3 years, have children, or more than 2 bedrooms, then preparation is very vital to your success in getting all your most wanted items packed and loaded properly into your storage container or truck. That said, College Movers do put in the back breaking work of moving things like pianos and they did get it done. It isn’t completely their fault that a lot of our items we wanted to take didn’t go into the load. But, I believe a more experienced crew would have had a more take charge approach as to prioritizing the loading process of items that were going and how to maximize the available space in an appropriate way that would have made it possible to load more items than were loaded. So, yes they are very punctual and priced fair. But, don’t expect a “company” of professional movers. In my experience it was a few young guys who can defiantly move things and get your process moving along in any situation. Worked well enough to make the rest work out. Thanks again!

I had a relatively small amount of things to move, but the communication and willingness to work me in on a schedule that was convenient to me were exceptional. This company will wrap your furniture in plastic wrap to protect it during the move! This is the second time that I used them, and I will use them again.

The guys were on time and very proffesional. They were very conscious of all our stuff and did a great job considering the three flights of stairs they had to navigate during the first part of the move. Our family was thankful for the job they did and I reccomend them to any one looking to move there items.

We moved a 1 bedroom apartment with a 3 man team. 3rd floor walk-up down to ground level and then back up to a 2nd floor walk-up. Came in under estimate, took them from 830-130 and that included a lapse in time due to an issue with the office. They put items where we asked, had tools to help us take a couple of things down, wrapped a couple of extra items, and did it all with amazing/super positive attitude, energy, and professionalism. We highly recommend Sebastian Moving and will use them in the future if we ever move again!

We had a couple of issues when moving but you have that with any company. Spaces are tight and walls get dinged. The company went over and above to help us fix any issues. Thanks

My entire experience with the staff of American Movers Orlando was a positive one. From the start, when I began searching for a moving company to transport a very heavy, very large, ornate and rare dining set from one end of town to another, American Movers Orlando immediately contacted me with a very reasonable quote. We set up a time, and communication was always easy. I was notified through every aspect of delivery - what time they would be arriving to the place where my item was bought, what time they would arrive to my home, etc. Justin and Richard were very prompt, courteous, careful with the way they handled my furniture, and they even took extra time to reassemble a tricky and uniquely-fitting china cabinet. The owner of the company followed up with a phone call to ensure that everything went smoothly. From my first inquiry to the company, to the final follow-up phone call that I received from them, American Movers Orlando embodies every aspect of professionalism that a stellar business should have, and I would highly recommend them to anyone.
