Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a handyman during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Setting up a safe consultation or appointment with a handyman during the COVID-19 pandemic starts with comparing local professionals online. Message or call the handyman to ask about performing a consultation over the phone or, better yet, a video call. This will allow the handyman to assess the problem without increasing the risk of transmission by visiting your home. If the service is essential and the handyman needs to enter your home, you’ll need to take stringent safety measures for the visit. Discuss temporary fixes if possible, and come up with a plan for safety and digital payment.

How can I find out if a handyman is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Depending on the service needed, a handyman may be considered essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. You can check by visiting your city or state’s government website. In addition, CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage offers national guidelines for determining essential services. Their page delineates 16 essential infrastructure sectors that can continue to operate during the pandemic. But note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a handyman when social distancing?

If you hire a handyman, stay 6 feet away from the handyman at all times. If you have an indoor emergency and it’s considered an essential service, take extra social distancing precautions with your handyman. Do not make physical contact, stay at least 6 feet from the handyman, and exchange payment through digital services instead of cash or check. Talk with your handyman and agree on a plan in advance.

Can I use digital payments to pay for handyman services?

Many handymen accept digital payments for work done repairing homes. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and the urgent need for social distancing, this trend is likely going to increase. Handymen often accept payment through popular platforms like Paypal, Google Pay, Zelle, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Consult with the handyman before you begin work to ensure you’ll be able to conduct the transaction safely and in compliance with official guidelines.

Does a handyman need to enter my home?

In many cases, a handyman will not need to enter your home for outdoor repairs, but they’ll likely need to enter your home for indoor repairs. With the pandemic’s associated safety guidelines, it’s important that this only occurs for absolutely essential projects. Avoid any physical contact with the handyman if this is the case. Sanitize surfaces, and conduct payment through a digital platform like PayPal or Venmo. Be sure to contact your handyman and develop a plan before the job commences.

Is it worth it to hire a handyman?

It’s worth it to hire a handyman in many cases. For example, you should hire a handyman when the project’s size and scope make it challenging to complete by yourself. These projects may include major home remodels or additions, foundation work or electrical/plumbing/HVAC-related tasks. However, make sure the handyman has the proper credentials or license to perform the necessary work.

You might also want to hire a handyman if a contractor’s price is too high. Handymen often charge less than general contractors, but contractors typically have the required license to perform certain tasks.

And, lastly, think about the complexity of the job and the cost of future repairs. It’s worth it to hire a handyman when the project is complex. Doing something incorrectly can wind up costing more than hiring the pro in the first place.

Do handymen offer remote or virtual services?

Because a handyman needs to be physically present to perform work, they have not traditionally offered remote or virtual services. However, if you come across handyman profiles that state they offer remote services, message the handymen to see what those services include.

Confer with your handyman to see if consulting over video calls is possible. The professional may be able to walk you through performing basic plumbing, electrical, HVAC and other types of repairs around the house. Compare the handymen in your area side-by-side online, and ask whether they’re willing to help remotely.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. John is the best handyman that I have ever worked with - period. He is a professional in every way - both personally and about his work, which is incredible. He's a great communicator, before he leaves he discusses what he has done, any items that still need to be completed, and if you need to buy anything to help him complete it.. Hire John, and you will always be happy!

I would highly recommend them to anyone. First off, a lot of handyman I tried to contact either didnt respond or were slow to respond. On the other hand, VIP Handyman Service responded to me within minutes and we had a time set up for them to come to my house and do the work. Great communication the entire time. Second, not only was Tim very polite and professional, he was extremely efficient. I had him replace 9 rocker light switches with smart switches and also a couple of ceiling light fixtures (that were approximately 20 feet up). Tim knocked all of this out in 3 hours flat. You could tell that he was not dragging things on to keep the clock running, but was going as quickly as possible to get each item done and move on to the next. Over the past 6 years since moving into my place, I have had 3 bad to horrible handymen. I had one other I liked, but he moved away which caused me to have to find a new one (VIP Handyman Service). I am so happy I found them (and Tim) because now I know whenever I need work done, I can easily get in touch with them and have a reliable company come and do the work quickly and efficiently. I realize that the rates are slightly higher than some other handymen you can find, but honestly, in light of how pleasant of an experience this was and how quickly Tim worked, it was well worth it and I probably saved money over using someone else.

Jack was supposed to arrive 10:00-10:30 and arrived at 11:00....no biggie...traffic was bad. He came in the house though like a crazy man who wanted to get things done in under five minutes. He didn't take his shoes off or wear shoe covers like I addressed in my ad. Which annoyed me because I have a low immune system and I didn't want his shoes all over my baby's rugs upstairs. He came in grabbed things and started moving things upstairs and downstairs. That's good, always nice to get straight to work but he was kind of like a crazy man moving too fast and was banging and dropping things. I took pictures of what he needed to move then he got annoyed because he had to take something apart to get it upstairs. He supposedly is the "assemble" guy but I guess not. My husband was there to help when he had to move a heavy table but he complained about having to do things himself and me not helping. Well, I am paying you. That was the job. If I could do it myself I would have and if my husband helped and did everything himself then why bother hiring a handyman. A handyman is there to help with things we don't have the time to do or can't do ourselves. My husband has a shoulder injury and was outside fixing something in his car until I called him in. I literally yelled for my husband to come help so I could get this whiny handyman out of our house. He made me uncomfortable. He never should have accepted a job if he couldn't do it. By the way, the disassemble that he had a heart attack over was four screws. I wouldn't hire him again. He charged me $50 and I gave him $60 because I didn't have change and just wanted him out! Not good.

I happened across Thumbtack for the first time this week, and I'm so glad I did. I hired Sean to put together a bunch of cabinets that would have taken my husband and I forever to put together. Sean not only did a perfect job, he did so quickly. He was extremely polite and thorough. I already have plans to hire him again to help with some minor electrical work and to install a new sink. It's really difficult to find a reliable handyman these days. I'm so glad I called Sean. Highly recommend him!

We made an appointment with Christina. When we learned that they are working husband and wife I told my husband it would be a good fit our project. I was thinking they would be take good care of our house. But when they arrived Jesus did not listen my husband about our project. When I tried to tell Jesus, he misunderstood and would not listen to me. Jesus got upset and they left our house without listening to the details of our project. Christina couldn't understand what the problem was. We didn't understand it either. We've never experienced a handyman getting upset discussing a project and not listening to a customer. They ended up wasting our time and we had to scramble to find another person for the project. We had a very bad experience with them.

I hired Ramon for the very fist time to assemble an entertainment center for my Granddaughter's bedroom on the 2nd floor in our house. Ramon carried the 100+ lb box upstairs carefully and effortlessly. The wood floors were very carefully and thoughtfully covered by Ramon to insure there would be no damage to the floors. The unit to be assembled was brand new, all wood , with complicated directions. Ramon worked meticulously and finished it with no problems whatsoever. While he worked on the assembly, I sat on one of the bed's in my Granddaughter's room and watched him work, scrutinizing his every move. I was afraid one of his tools might damage the wood in some way. No chance!! I continuously asked him questions which probably would have been extremely annoying to most other workers, but not Ramon. He answered all my questions with patience, intelligence, his natural charm, and at times even good humor. I am "Very Fussy" and pay great attention to every tiny detail. You might say I have "eagle eyes". His work was Perfect. That is saying a lot coming from me!AND--- Without me asking!!! Ramon went above and beyond when he carried the new TV upstairs and actually attached the legs making it possible to place the TV on the new piece of furniture he had just assembled. He removed all the empty boxes and cleaned up all the remaining unused materials and brought everything outside for bulk pickup day. He left the room as it was when he arrived. The unit looks gorgeous and flawless! I saw then that "Ramon goes the extra mile", which is the road less traveled by other workers and it is never crowded. I was so happy! His work was PERFECT and his Price was The Best and No Stress for me!!. I am hoping to use Ramon for many bigger home projects in the very near future. After seeing photos of his other projects and speaking with him I learned that he can do everything related to a home. I now know that with Ramon there is no stress (can't say that enough), no surprises as with most others who change prices after work becomes too difficult for them or more time consuming than initially anticipated. He not only honored his price, but went way above and beyond my expectations of what he would do. His work is Perfect, his price is the Best, No Stress, great energy in his charming, patient, kind personality---what could be better?!! It was a great stroke of luck for me when I made the right decision to hire Ramon Douglas of RD Handyman. What a wonderful world it would be if we had more people like Ramon to deal with! I wish I could clone him. What a wonderful world it would be!
