Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a landscaper or lawn care professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation call with a lawn care professional or landscaper during the COVID-19 pandemic, take advantage of digital technologies to avoid face-to-face exposure. When searching for lawn mowing, landscaping and lawn care companies online, ask if they’ll do a video call to assess the job and give you an estimate. You can also go over strategies for completing the job and conducting virtual payments to stay safe.

How can I find out if a landscaper or lawn care professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To consult national guidelines on essential COVID-19 service providers and see whether a lawn care professional qualifies, visit a page on CISA’s website called Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This website contains 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors that you can search through. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure so you should also check your city or state’s government website.

Can I use digital payments to pay for outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing, tree trimming and other similar services?

Many outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing and tree trimming companies will likely accept some form of digital payment instead of cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely causing more businesses to adopt digital platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash and Google Pay.

Search professionals’ online profiles to see if they list digital payment services, and ask them about their payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a landscaper or lawn care professional need to enter my home?

Because landscaping and lawn maintenance take place outdoors, it is unlikely that these professionals will need to enter your home.

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, practice social distancing at all times -- even with professionals doing work outside. You can minimize exposure during a consultation by using a video chat service. And when you pay, you can use a digital payment service like PayPal. Discuss strategies with any lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming and lawn care companies you may be considering.

Do landscapers or lawn care professionals offer remote or virtual services?

Landscapers and lawn care professionals generally do not offer remote or virtual services. But if you come across a profile that states the landscaper is offering remote services, it’s best to contact them to see what type of remote work is offered.

Typically, lawn care and landscaping professionals can perform many of their duties without coming into physical contact with clients. Message local lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming, and lawn care companies near you to schedule a video call and inquire about remote services.

Is hiring a landscaper worth it?

A landscaper is worth it if you don't want to invest a significant amount of time and effort into planting, trimming, raking, weeding and performing other operations on your garden or yard. Hiring a landscaper to perform regular maintenance in your yards and complete bigger projects is valuable if you’re looking to sell your house. A professional landscaper can make your house more appealing to potential buyers.

Some landscapers may perform maintenance duties — remove leaves, mow lawns, trim trees and shrubs, etc. —  but they can also help you bring bigger projects to life. This may include adding a misting system, an outdoor fireplace, water features, artificial turf, a patio and much more.

Start contacting landscapers near you to get free estimates and start planning your project today.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What is included in lawn service?

Full-service lawn care companies typically offer a wide range of lawn care services, including mowing, mulching, landscaping, leaf removal, tree and shrub care, and more.

Companies may offer additional specialty services, depending on your location and the type of business. For example, a company may provide seasonal maintenance services such as aeration, hedge trimming and weeding, while another offers pest control, seeding services and grub control.

I was very impressed with Quang's knowledge and creative solutions to my landscaping needs. My husband and I are extremely happy with the job that Bao Landscaping performed. The team was extremely professional. I found that each team member actually CARED about the job they were doing, and these days, that's extremely rare. We have asked Quang to return periodically to fertilize and keep things looking fresh. He's an outstanding landscaper and a wonderful human being. I highly recommend Bao Landscaping..

Santos can right out for the quote on time. Designed up a great looking new landscape on the spot at a fair price. When we agreed on a date he and his crew again showed up on time (early in fact) and took care of business. Looks great. Wife loves it!

We had about 5 or 6 companies contact us regarding our sod installation and after reading all the reviews, we decided on Dayners landscaping Inc. First off, I'm not one to write reviews but Oberlan and his company did such a FLAWLESS job installing our sod that I would be remiss not to recommend his company to anyone seeking out landscaping work. Oberlan's knowledge and overall work performance were the best we've had when it comes to landscaping. The first day he came out,he explained the process (killing the weeds and grass before removal, checking the sprinkler system, fertilization, and exactly what types of grass to use) in one weeks time,my backyard went from looking dead and worn to pristine. He instantly took an eyesore and turned it into eye candy. He even took the time to re-sod some dead spots in the front yard with extra pieces without us even asking. He went above and beyond. On top of the fantastic work he did on our yard, the price was extremely fair and above all, he is just a nice, trustworthy guy. Especially in S. Florida,my biggest concern going into this process was the unknown and all of the companies with zero reviews or that wanted to rush through the process. Oberlan alleviated all of our concerns, and much like finding a great, trustworthy mechanic, we will be using Dayners Landscaping Inc for ALL of our future yard work. I wish i could post before and after pictures. It doesn't even look like the same house. If you are on the fence trying to decide on a company, call Oberlan. It's just that simple.

Everything about Oberlan was awesome! When he says he’s coming at a certain time he’s there. He didn’t leave a single piece of dirt out of place when he was done and that is a rare quality. He is the whole deal. You will not be disappointed if you hire Dayners to look after your landscaping needs, trust me!

Mr. Bao did a great job on my home. We bought the home as a foreclosure and there was a ton of work to be done. His prices are fair and his advice has saved me hundreds of dollars. I'm so impressed by his work and professionalism that I have referred him to my realtor. I plan on using him for all my future landscaping projects.

Jorge is a down to earth guy. He showed up each time when promised. His quotes were the lowest I’ve seen. I had 2 pallets of sod laid down. He fixed broken pipes and sprinklers out of the kindness of his heart. He was such a hard work. His guy busted his butt all day with Jorge and they were very professional. I am so pleased with Jorge and his wonderful work on my yard. He will be back out to late another pallet in a month. I’ll definitely use Jorge for all of my landscaping needs. Lovely man to work with and very respectful. Goes above and beyond!!!

I hired Quang, the proprietor of Bao Lawn Care Services, to be the 'full service' maintainers of my residence at the beginning of May, 2015. 'Full service' was agreed to mean more than simply cut-blow-and-go as Quang was to address the keep of flower beds, trees, hedges, weeds, and more. After expressing to Quang that his pricing was more than double what I was accustomed to paying, he assured me (and I quote), "I would be WOWED." Quang started strong making lots of plans for improvements and changes to the landscaping of my home. First Quang requested $70 above and beyond the 'full service' fee to remove berries from some palms. Next Quang asked for $270 more for one thing or another and then again for more than $800 to replant four flower beds. With the first request, I provided a check of $170 though only $70 was requested. For the second, I expressed concern regarding the cost, yet provided a check. Now comes the fun, "Quang, where did you go?" or "Quang, what is taking so long", I messaged Quang on more than one occasion. "Not 'wowed' yet", I message on still another. Each time I expressed discontent with both the slowness of Quang's operation (though paid in full for every penny requested) as well as the questionable execution of his work (weeds remain in my pavers and flower beds, sidewalks never edged, mulch laid so thinly it washed away, trees still have dead fronds dangling from palms, etc). Finally, at the beginning of July and more than $1500 poorer, I had to tell Quang his services were not longer needed. To say Quang took the news poorly is an understatement. He demanded another $300 dollars for 'services rendered' despite the fact he only re-planted two of the four beds we agreed to for which I had already paid over $800 and one of the beds he planted was with 'used' plants apparently removed from another of Quang's job sites where they were overgrown and not wanted. These 'used' plants all died within days. All of this, I am able to suffer. The final indignation came when Quang sent repeated texts and emails to me stating things like: "I should be ashamed of myself for not liking his work." That, "I was unprofessional and not worthy of him seeking a remedy for my discontent." That, "I should tell my wife I was firing him and why so she could talk some sense into me." That, "I only complained about the poor quality of his work when he asked for more money." On and on and on. There are other equally or even greater offensive details to describe my experience with Quang and Bao Lawn Care, but I trust the reader gets the point. My recommendation? Avoid this lawn service unless you desire shoddy overpriced work peppered with ample threats and verbal abuse.
