Kevin was hired to hang multiple pictures, some large and expensive, multiple mirrors and a few accent pieces. He arrived on time, greeted me and presented his business card and was very personable. His work was meticulous, I have never seen anyone be so detailed orientated. He measured every aspect including wired picture space to make sure that the piece would hang exactly where you wanted it. I had him hang multiple mirrors in the same area that were precisely hung exactly as I had imagined them. Everything he did could not have been done any better and I am really OCD and particular and he exceeded my expectations which is hard to do. He is multi talented and I am already making a list for him to return to help make my house more of a home. If your looking for someone that knows what he's doing, has excellent work ethics, takes their time and treats your home as if it were his own Kevin is most definitely your man. I am so happy that I now have found someone who knows what they are doing. Thank you Thumbtack and thank you Kevin!

I had Nick do a lot of work for me. He power washed the roof and the whole house. When he was on the roof he found quite a few tiles that had slid because they hadn't been secured when the house was built 6 years ago. He also changed out 3 water faucets in the two bathrooms and he was really fast at that. I think he did a great job and will have him back to wash my driveway and sidewalk. He is a definite re-hire for me.

Donnelly Construction remodeled my office replacing the carpet with tile and adding office space. Completely painted and added crown molding. Vanity replaced and bathroom done. They did exactly what I wanted done and had no problem making changes and did more than I asked for. Mike Donnelly is a the most honest hard working builder I've ever met. I highly recommend him for all your construction or home building needs.

Everything about my dealings with JAG were awesome. From the moment I phoned and spoke to Esmeralda about my irrigation issues, though to the completing of the repairs performed by Javier, everything was PERFECT in terms of customer service, and PERFECT in terms of making the repairs. I will continue to consider JAG for any work around my home and look forward to working with Javier real soon.

Greg and his team installed wood-like tile and new base boards throughout my entire house. They have great service, quality and pricing! Greg can order the tile and supplies through his sources so that made it a pretty seamless experience for me but I know he would also install a tile of your choice as well. The other great thing about them is they can do other projects for your home. For example, I had a bit of drywall work that I needed done and they were able to do that for me while working on the tile install. The end result looks really great, I would definitely recommend them to my friends and family.

I had a back lanai ceiling that was deteriorating. Dan was the only contractor to pick up the phone. We met soon after to discuss the job. Dan saw my vision and offered suggestions that were exactly what I wanted. He also was honest and told me when something would be very expensive. The crew was excellent. Great at what they do. My project took some time but I added other projects during the progress. In the end everything looks great and I couldn't be happier. It's like living in a new house.

From start to finish, their attention to detail and clear communication made the entire project a pleasurable experience. The job was completed according to the agreed deadline with expert craftsmanship. I'd hire them again if in need of the same service.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
