Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a tiler when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a tiler in your area, stay at least 6 feet away from worker(s), don’t shake hands, sanitize all involved surfaces and use digital payment platforms instead of cash or a check. During the consultation, put a plan together to help ensure everyone's safety.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

The tile and grout look great. There were a few small areas in the corners of the bathrooms that I had to do, but the tile and grout look good. My MDF baseboards and thresholds are wrecked though from the amount of water they were subjected to. I’ll need to have them replaced...5 star tile work; not happy about the baseboard and threshold damage.

Aaron was excellent. Very professional, hard-working, and honest. I'm so impressed with the quality of his work. We had a terrible tiled floor that ran right through a built in walk in closest. He managed to get the old tile out without damaging anything and re-tiled perfectly underneath, you wouldn't know the floor was not original! I'd highly recommended Aaron, he's wonderful.

I contacted Smart Carpet & Tile on 12/29 to inquiry about services, they responded very promptly and I was able to schedule my free estimate for 1/2/19. Moshe arrived promptly when they said they would arrive. I decided to go ahead and accept the quote and he was able to complete the work the same day. He helped with moving the furniture and was very courteous and professional.. I was very impressed and pleased with the work he did. I would highly recommend Smart Carpet and Tile for tile and grout cleaning. He did an amazing job !!!

I spoke with Inna and sent pictures of the glass tile backsplash as well as pictures of my brand new kitchen. We needed to have the backsplash installed along with a new faucet, dishwasher and garbage disposal. We agreed on a price and she advised that Ivan would be able to complete the job on Sunday. Ivan arrived early(which wasn't a problem) and got started right away. My husband and I left for a few to go pick up the new dishwasher, when we got back Ivan was partially done with the backsplash. From a distance it looked ok but when I took a closer look I noticed that a large amount of the glass tiles were cracked and shattered and the tiles were not even. When I pointed it out to Ivan, he said that he'll cover it up with grout. The shards of glass would cut you if you ran your hand on it. I asked if he could fix it and was very patient. I even showed him a youtube video on how to cut glass subway tile and offered to have him used my tile cuter. Ivan said "so you don't want me to do job, I'm gone!" I explained again that I didn't want him to leave, I just wanted him to line the tiles up straight and for him to cut them properly so it's not installed shattered and crooked. Some tiles were jammed together and others had a big gap between them, no symmetry. Again Ivan said "I'm not doing that, good luck" he pushed spacers between some of the tiles, packed up his stuff and left. He was very combative and rude, my kids and husband came out of the room and asked why he was talking to me like that. After Ivan left Inna called and apologized for his behavior and asked me not to leave a bad review because she said "it will kill me if you leave a bad review" not sure what that means. We had to peel off the backsplash sheets and scrape off the thin set. He ruined hundreds of dollars worth of tiles. He also cut the trim off my new cabinets without permission to do so and put several nicks in my new cabinet door. Overall I'm very unhappy. I attached pictures of the sloppy work as well as what we are left with now that we had to peel off the tiles. Terrible experience, I would not recommend.

Luigi arrived on time and did an excellent job even though we changed the type of tile 2 days before the scheduled start. His focus on detail was very good. We are very happy with him and will use him again!

My tile grout had not been cleaned for years. Up front was told that the tile may not look as new. And I understood this up front. However, upon completion there was spots that had not been as clean. I accepted because overall was a dramatic change to what it was prior. And was told this was the best that could be done. My wife came home and scrubbed the spots that where not as clean. With minimal effort these too cleaned like the other cleaned areas. None of the toe kick under the cabinets where cleaned. So we had the to do these ourselves also. This is why my rating is 3 stars.

I met with the owner who assured me that he had years of experience in installing a shower pan. He charged top dollar at $1200 for a shower stall but I didn't complain. The shower pan was installed properly but when it came to the tile installation both he and his guy had to return three separate times to do corrections. Tiles were installed crooked walls were bowed where tiles were installed and there were gaps between the grout throughout. After the third time there were still issues and I was so fed up I just never called him again and hired someone else to complete the job properly. The sad part is he agreed that the work was done poorly and offered to do another project for me for free. For me he should have returned some of my money knowing that I would have to get the work corrected rather than offer me more less than standard work.

Paul came over to measure and provide a quote. Once the project started, there were a couple of additional charges that came up along the way... towards the completion of the project, they ran out of tile even though we had purchased extra. In the end, the floors look great.

In addition he showed up few minutes before the appointment and left instructions for the first 24 hours process. Planning to use Smart Carpet for my furniture next. Thank you Moshe!

The service that W & B provided was outstanding ! I wish I could give them 10 stars. We were having a hard time getting our bathroom completed after firing our last tile person. Multiple companies have stated they were coming to do an estimate and they did not show up. W & B not only showed up when they said they would, but they were early. The work their team did was nothing less than perfection. They were quick, professional and cleaned up after themselves every day. The price was fair for the service provided and I would recommend them to anyone looking for a tile layer. Wish I could upload photos, but looks like the app doesn't allow you to. All I can say is hire Gabriel and his team. You won't be disappointed !

Update**February 2020 - Shower drain came off while showering. It was never screwed in, just secured with caulk. Sink faucet handles are twisting 360 degrees. Now for the details of our uncompleted project - Get your popcorn! Dec 31, 2019, 8:29 AM This contractor needs a lot of supervision. As he puts "He can only give you the best he's got", which is at par. The project never reached completion. Jason and his helper / contractor abandoned the project without any follow up or communication. We had to hire another contractor to complete this project and redo what was not completed or completed correctly. On top of that, Jason left our recently paved driveway and porch full of white thinset and grout. He dumped thinset in the grass and killed all the grass in that area. He also cut tiles and metal framing on the side of house and left all the sharp edge pieces in the grass. We have little children that play in that grass, but we had to clean it out to make is safe again. Jason didn't have a truck at the time so he used our backyard and garage to store his waste. The waste sat there for over 3 weeks. On top of the inconvenience, he had an attitude when we asked him to remove all the garbage, including the boxes left from installations. He was operating out of an old sedan, not a truck. This caused a few problems. He could have rented a truck instead of using our house as a waste container. We wasted a lot of time going back in forth to Floor decor because of terrible communication with Jason. If certain parts of the project were beyond his scope, he changed his mind. Very confusing. He said he could do the job within the allotted time frame in the beginning, but gave a lot of resistance during the project. Basically, anything that was beyond his skillset he complained about or advised us to get different materials. Our center waterfall tiles in the shower and surrounding tiles are chipped and cut badly. The shower spout is uncentered. Several areas were missing grout, the ceiling was unfinished, areas needed to be repainted, faucets handles are loose and metal framing is protruding unsafely. The shower floor is also has high and low tiles with some even crumbling when touching. Wherever Jason had an imperfect cut, he used a thick amount of thinset/grout to compensate. This guy has very poor craftsmanship and not very efficient in his finishing touches. Beware: He can become very argumentative if he doesn't get his way. He is also extremely unprofessional due to the fact the he told me that "Americans have no culture, other than Turkey" We should have fired him then, instead of putting ourselves through this unsatisfying ordeal. It's not fun trying to find another contractor to redo work within a deadline. Jason and crew totally abandoned us. Oddly enough, he even had the audacity to demand full payment, after he disappeared for a week with no follow up. I totally understand why Thumbtack was referring real companies to complete our bathroom remodel, instead of unlicensed contractors. WE SHOULD HAVE LISTENED. If your tiling the floor only, this may be your guy. He wont wow you, but you will get a decent job done with maximum supervision. But if you need anything outside of laying tile on the floor look elsewhere. We lost a lot time and money on this project and even had to clean up after this guy. I think our small little bathroom remodel was too overwhelming for Jason. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.

We hired Tiago to complete an unfinished tile job. His tile work is good. We also needed our kitchen demoed, ceiling / walls re-plastered, common areas painted, add 2 outlets and replace a small area of drywall. The kitchen demo went well. But after that everything went down hill. Tiago does not speak English at all. He speaks Portuguese and uses Google translator to communicate. Since we live in S.Florida, this is very common. We explained to Tiago that we would like to put this in writing so there is no confusion. He was unable to produce an itemized invoice. He just quoted a price and agreed to complete the necessary items. Not only did Tiago, not complete the items he agreed to complete, he also did an extremely poor job on sanding and plastering. He complained about the ceiling being painted and that's the best he could do, although he said he could do it and was paid $2500. I have attached pictures of his work. When I reached out to explain that I did not like the plastering and paint job. He actually plastered the ceiling without removing the recessed lights. (Who does that!?) When confronted about the poor workmanship and communication, Tiago became combative and said that he wasn't doing anymore work, and he did what we paid him to do. This was a lie. We went back and forth in WhatsApp sending him all the text messages, showing proof of his confirmation. We even asked him about the Backsplash and he said he didn't agree to that either! WTF! We spoke to Tiago about backsplash about 4 times. But he denied it , even though we showed proof via text. Tiago, didn't make any attempts to make us happy or provide a reasonable resolution. He stopped communicating through WhatsApp. So no we are left with a job undone. We had to hire new guys to complete what he refused to do. From this point on, we will never hire someone who doesn't speak English! The lack of proper communication caused too many problems. When we went over the scope of the work to be done, Tiago just nodded yes, although we now realize he had no idea what we were talking about. If you have a small job, you may get what you paid for, but if it's a 2-3+ part job, LOOK ELSEWHERE! Also, since he ran away, he didn't clean up, do a final walk through, and left our new tile full of paint and plaster that we now have to clean up. Nice guy but Very unprofessional!! Learn from our mistake and don't do it!
