Had Herb come out and move the pipes about 6 inches. He did the best job and repaired the wall completely. He also connected the plumbing for the new vanity. Great job and a great guy. Highly recommend

Where do I start? He got back to me IMMEDIATELY after submitting a request, he worked around my schedule, he called to confirm before he was coming over and was on time to the minute. He jumped right in on my kitchen sink, showed me what he was seeing and suggested and got it fixed. I will absolutely be calling him again for future plumbing needs and highly recommend him to anyone!!!

I had a property for sale that needed multiple repairs, roofing, plumbing, electrical, carpentry. Builders of America responded promptly and on time. They would have been able to complete all repairs but my buyer decided to offer less and take the property as is. Nice to deal with. Will use another time

I recently had a plumber to my home who claimed he could install the ECO 27 tankless hot water heater and do BOTH the plumbing and electrical work required. He completed the plumbing piece with no problem. Unfortunately he was not able to complete the electrical piece of this project. Motor Singh came to my home on a holiday weekend, immediately diagnosed and resolved the electrical issues! He was familiar with these units and knew exactly how to get them working! I will definitely hire this professional again!

I needed to have an existing toilet removed and a new toilet installed in my new home. After waiting for a week for my builder’s plumber to never call back, I decided to use Thumbtack at 9:30pm on a Saturday night. Jason responded almost immediately with a proper and reasonable quote and stated that he could be at my home at 9:30 the following morning. Due to a commitment I already had, 9:30 would have been a tad late, so I asked him if he would be willing to either come earlier or in the afternoon. Jason said he would be at my home at 8:00am. On Sunday morning, Jason called and said he was a little early (what a problem to have). As I met him and shook hands, you could tell immediately that he was all about the customer and was gong to do a great job and he did. Jason even went as far as to ask if we had extra grout for the tile as he wanted to install a little grout around the base of the toilet over the caulk for additional protection. Jason finished in a little over an hour and the new toilet works perfectly. I would, and will, recommend Jason in the future. In addition to plumbing, he also let me know that he was a handy man for other home related jobs.

The dispatcher had expertise and was able to explain processes and service work and why they were better than the competition. (None of the others companies I spoke to could do it!). I value that. The plumbers were very professional, had high expertise and explained things. They voluntarily showed me the replaced parts. They provided options and quoted prices from a book that appeared very reasonable. We tested the work together and all was good the first time. The supervisor Alex made helpful suggestions and went above the call of duty to provide quality service. There was no service charge for coming out and there is no extra charge for after hours. This is a high integrity organization with great plumbing expertise and communication expertise! I rate company, staff and technicians AAA+! Highly Recommended!!!

Working with Joe was a very pleasant and professional experience. He responded right away to help fix a broken drain and ended up helping with a couple other plumbing issues. He even had the spare parts we needed in his car. I’m happy that I’ve found someone that we can rely on for our plumbing needs. Thanks Joe!

Mo came to see my plumbing issue with my main line being backed up. Although the issue was not resolved due to the distance of the main line from my house, I must say he was very thorough in running the snake in the line and pulling out a bunch of disgusting stuff that was in the mainline. He was very detail d in explaining the issue to me, showed me what he pulled out and is very knowledgeable! I recommend him for your plumbing headaches!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
