Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Franco is truly amazing with his God-given talent. He takes the time to explain what makes a dog tick. Realistically, his title should not be dog trainer but people trainer. We have learned so much from him in regards to how a dog thinks and as a result we have a very well behaved dog.

We came across K9 because we were having problems with our dog, nuez. She was being reactive to people and dogs and too nervous all the time. They answer me right away to help us and I’m glad we did choose them to train her. They did an incredible job with her. She is a confident dog now and her obedience is perfect after the training with Bar. I highly recommend K9 to train your dog.

My partner and I are thrilled with the results of our dog's training! I spent a long time trying to find the right trainer because I knew our dog was a special case full of bad habits that needed fixing. Especially since we had tried other training classes in the past with no success. Full Potential stuck out immediately though! They're training technique is incredibly effective and it shows. We feel like we have a brand new dog!

Cliff has a wonderful way of communicating with not only dogs but also their owners. He provides clear instructions while training and leaves written instructions for use in reinforcing what was learned. His training has made an enormous difference in my dog's behaviors and in how I communicate with them. I would highly recommend Cliff for any training needs.

Vivienne always shows up on time, ready to work. Her methods are constructive and effective and she demonstrai my dog being trained AND even for my other dog, who is MUCH older and not being trained. Her pricing is very reasonable and competitive and she always protests about accepting gratuity or anything for gas/travel or extras. She is very kind, polite, and professional and I would absolutely recommend her to anyone who wants/needs their dog trained. 8

Cliff is an exceptional trainer. We had a pretty severe case of aggression with our dog. Our dog is a 5 year old shepherd lab mix and 100 pounds so dealing with the aggression was pretty hard so we hired Cliff. We were a little nervous in the beginning because we are very protective of our "baby." Cliff showed great professionalism and is very skilled and trained trainer. We now trust Cliff 110% with our dog and he has taught us so much!!! Our dogs behavior has improved so much and even friends and family have noticed and commented. His past behaviors included biting, aggression towards other dogs on walks, not listening to us and overall stubbornness and if he didn't want to do it he wasn't going to. We still have things to learn and more training to do but our dog has definitely had a major improvement and continues to learn from Cliff. If you are looking for a trainer for your dog Cliff is your guy!

Jane responded quickly to my request for a dog trainer. I wanted a trainer who would come to my home and train me and our dog. First I spent time on the phone with Jane to identify my needs and what I wanted to accomplish. Next Jane met me and our dog at my home for a 2 hour training session. Jane provided techniques on how to work on wait, & come and how to apply in different situations. Most helpful was her guidance in training him to walk without lunging and pulling. Since our session Jane continues to call and follow up with our progress. And to offer new suggestions. We are grateful for her help and continued support.

Rich is amazing! We have a 1-year-old Boxer that was not only mischievous at home but had recently turned dog-aggressive after being attacked in a dog park.... We were at our wits end trying to correct our pups behavior at home with positive reinforcement gleaned from two previous trainers... not to mention heartbroken to see our pup go from a dog-friendly goof-ball to a dog-aggressive pup... so we decided to contact Rich- we were skeptical about the e-collar at first, but after testing it out there was no denying the success and positive change in our pup with Rich's guidance and the e-collar. Although, the training has been tough on us (training humans is def harder than training pups) we've seen excellent results- our pup has significantly improved at home and he is easing his way back into dog parks... So if you're in need of some help this is your guy!

Check out all the other trainers then give Jane the call! You will be so happy you did. Jane is my third trainer and the first to truly impress me. She definitely has her own unique style which I'm grateful for. First we spoke on the phone for about an hour discussing my concerns for my dog. Then the next day she arrived and slowly got acquainted with my dog and trained me on how to deal with Marco. Slowly but surely everything's gonna be alright!

Our dog Stitch was very aggressive towards other dogs and people, we couldn't take him on walks or have guests come to our house without dealing with constant barking and growling. After the Board & Train program with K9 Pack Stitch was so much more calm, confident, and obedient. Great service and amazing understanding of dogs mentality, highly recommended.

Our trainer Brianna is very knowledgeable and has given us valuable training tools for our puppy. We are first-time dog owners so she has to not only help train our puppy but educate us as well! She does so with professionalism, being both firm and friendly when providing instruction. We highly recommend her services !

Nathaniel was extremely knowledgeable of the obedience training I needed to help my dog Charley. He has been a great influence to help correct my dogs aggressive behavior. It is no joke that I learned so much about proper dog owner communication from his teachings. I really appreciate his understanding and support through this process and highly recommend him and his staff.

I called Nathanial after reading his detailed positive reviews on Thumbtack. I spoke with him directly and explained the issues I was having with my dachshunds. When he initially came to my home we discussed a plan and began to tackle it. He was a unique trainer and his approach made sense. He has a genuine love and passion for dogs and is incredibly gifted at what he does. He was ALWAYS early to the appointment and does just as good of a job training the dogs as he does the owner. Nathanial is very patient and what’s most important to him is that the dog owner is happy with the results.

Jane has great suggestions for tools, puzzles, and toys that provide enrichment (and keep dogs busy and happy!). Also I think it’s valuable that coaching class following the training class are included for check-ins for any questions, concerns, and additional training tips. Very responsive over text too!

The trainer was absolutely awesome, I have to say. He connected with my dog immediately, never abused her in any way and was very good at communicating concepts to me and her. The only issue I have is that I finished my 4th and final lesson today and we never went over any off leash training whatsoever. Given that the name of the business is off leash k9 training I find this to be a bit odd. Again, I don't think this was a fault of the trainer, maybe my dog took longer than average to pick up concepts. I'm not sure what the problem was, but at $600 I was expecting more than just the standard sit stay lay down on leash...

All I can say is that working with Bar was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I have a labrador puppy who I wanted to be well trained. I met with several trainers but decided to go with Bar because of his reliance on positive reinforcement. It was definitely the right decision. My 4 month old puppy is already the most well trained dog I've ever had. And her confidence level is outstanding. She is fearless but respectful. All things Bar told me to expect. You can tell that Bar really communicates well with the animals he's training. And his follow up was outstanding. I'm already considering doing an advanced class with him. I highly recommend Bar. He's quite simply the best dog trainer I've ever worked with.
