Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

My husband and I were very happy with the methods of Franko’s training advise for our dog. Watching our dog respond was an eye opening experience. We found out that we (humans) needed the training and that was a great help.

We used Cliff to train our new puppy and our older dog who was displaying some aggressive behaviors towards other dogs. Our dogs loved him and he did a great job working with them. Their undesirable behaviors have decreased, and Cliff also trained us to be better owners. Since our training sessions, we have also used Cliff for boarding when we are out of town. The dogs always come back happy and tired!

Really helped me work with my puppy shiba inu; hatchi, My dog respects me more than he did when i first got him. i have an amazing bond with my dog i never thought was possible! when guests come over and leave the door open my dog listens to me and lays down right next to me and ignores what other people are doing. There's little work left for my dog to complete to become the absolute best dog he can be but i've definitely come a long way as well with my dog, with the help of K9 club i've become a wonderful dog owner from absolute no experience. I even have a new dog now, a senior dog who has issues of his own but with the help of franco to help teach me how to train i know i will have both dogs behaving the best they can that i know they can! Happy k9 club is the best of the best i guarantee, working in a pet store before taught me that the trainings that are held there dont exactly help owners the way they hope, its better to call happy k9 club because the training doesnt just fall on the dogs, but also with better owners!

Judy was extremely nice and professional and gave me a lot of great pointers on training my puppy, and the training even got him to be calm walking by another dog that was pulling on his leash to get to him! She did a free consultation and didn't charge me for the time when she helped me fit my new harness on my dog. I am very pleased with my experience!

Brianna is amazing! She is very knowledgeable and extremely professional. My puppy is a completely new dog. Before the board and train he was not potty trained and did not listen and did what ever he wanted. Just two weeks with Brianna he is now so calm and listens and no longer goes in the house. I am so pleased with her work. She sent videos and pictures of his progress. If your looking to have your dog or puppy trained I would %100 recommend her I would not look any further. She is a puppy whisperer and very observant and thorough. She gets to know your dogs habits and logs them and trains according. Truly a great experience!!! We are going to use her again for when we go away in 3 weeks.

I'm writing this review on behalf on my mother who hired Wendy of Puppy Dog Luv to train her puppy, Pixie. My mom purchased a package of ten 1-hour sessions. Wendy was an exceptional trainer who went above and beyond to assist my mom. She often times stayed longer and even made herself available for phone calls when my mom needed guidance. I would highly recommend Wendy to anyone needing a trainer. She's truly remarkable!

Jane Katz is a gem! We are brand new dog owners of an adopted rescue dog. We never had a dog before. We were at our wits’ end and then miracle woman, Jane walked in. She is like no other trainer you could possibly hire. I know, because I interviewed many and hired several, only to let them go. Jane has a degree in counseling. She has worked as a counselor with human beings who are anxious. With her deep love for animals, she has transferred her human skills to her work with dogs and their owners. Now, that’s a benefit you won’t find with anyone else! Jane is caring, knowledgeable about people and dogs, and is devoted to her work—clearly a labor of love for Jane. Our dog loves her! We love her! She has changed us from not being sure if we could keep our dog who wasn’t housetrained, to people who can’t live without our beautiful dog. Don’t miss the chance for Jane to change your life and your dog’s life!

My husband and I contacted Wendy to provide training to our Golden doodle puppy, Stella. Stella is strong-willed and full of personality and we knew we were going to need professional assistance with regards to her training. Wendy taught us how to work with Stella and we started working on the basic commands with a focus on those that were most important to her safety. Along the way Wendy has also shared some pointers to deal with every day challenges that come up in Stella's life. Wendy is very patient and is great with dogs (and people).

Update 4/26/2017! Rosie continues to be great! We had a follow up session and it was great. Fiona remembered her and loved seeing her again. We got a new harness that works much better for us on walks and she is pulling much less thanks to Rosie's guidance. Continue to highly recommend Rosie! Rosie is great! We've only had one session so far, but will be scheduling more. I have a very smart, active, and skittish pup that just turned one. She is well behaved, house trained, and knows her basic commands, but she needs more. Rosie was so great with my Fiona. I feel like she understood her personality and what I was looking for in training. We have homework and Fiona is learning fast. Highly recommended for her experience, knowledge and her way with my dog.
