Mr. Stanley is a truly outstanding ACT/SAT prep coach. With his efficient writing and reading techniques, I have been able to gradually improve my times as well as answer quality. His son, Costan, is also very helpful and informative math tutor. In fact, Costan may have taught me more than my math teacher at school has. The way that Costan distributes the material is very simple and easy to understand. He thourougly breaks the material down to the point where it is nearly impossible to not understand. Altogether, my experience with both Mr. Stanley and Costan has been a great one that has helped me find tremendous improvement.

I met Andres when my son was in MIDDLE SCHOOL and was in great need of a MATH tutor as my husband had passed away and he was the smart one with mathematics. Andres tutored my son from Middle School and all of HIGH SCHOOL three sometimes four times per week. It is very important to mention that my son did very well in school, with very good grades. Andres was a motivator, he was very patient, explained the work so that he could understood, knew when to say.."you need to practice more"...gave assignments so that he would have better understanding through practicing......Now my son is in college, very confident, completed COLLEGE ALGEBRA and continues pursue other math challenges, thanks to the tutoring he received over the years. Wishing you great success Andres...in my books, you are the BEST. Patricia

We have used Kenny for the past 2 years. Thanks to Kenny, my daughter progressed from being a low C math student to an 'A' student. He is easy going and has a great way of explaining math concepts the kids understand. My daughter prefers studying with Kenny than her own math teacher. He is always available when were need him.

Mr. Burgos has helped me with math since middle school. He is very attentive, he has an awesome way of explaining to make things easier to understand, goes above and beyond to ensure that you understand the material. Mr. Burgos is also very patient and guides you until you can understand the subject better. As a sophomore in college, I still receive tutoring from him every now and then!

After my child first meeting with Mrs. Bridgewater, he was more confident in math. He was ready to tackle any math lesson his teacher throw his way. As a parent I was very pleased with wide range of knowledge of math material.

Melinda was the ideal tutor for my youngest sister. She helped her improve her math and reading skills in time for the 3rd grade FSA. She prepared Abigail with effective practice and provided tools that my sister could use out of tutoring. Melinda is punctual and professional. She is also great with children, as my sister was highly responsive to her and very comfortable. I plan to use her services again.

Dave is a great math tutor. Both my kids (a middle schooler and high schooler) find him easy to work with, supportive and effective. He breaks down concepts very quickly in a way that students of any level can understand, and his easy going demeanor takes the pressure off of what can be a stressful time. I recommend him highly!

Mr. DeMartin has been a blessing for our daughter who is now a 7th grader and has been tutored by John for 2 years. When we first started with him, our daughter was way behind in math. Our fear was that she would be put in the remedial program in middle school. All of her standardized tests were troubling. After a few months with John, she took her next standardized test and she scored at the 97th percentile in math (up from the 20s). He has also helped our 10 year old son to get ahead in math which gives him much more confidence. Mr. DeMartin is extraordinarily patient and thorough, explaining things in a way that clicks with the kids. He is kind, warm hearted, and extremely intelligent. He is very easy to talk with and really connects with the kids. We would highly recommend Mr. DeMartin and anyone who is lucky enough to have him help will feel the same way.

When my daughter was falling behind in middle school math, I hired a tutor from Mathletics to help her because the concepts were way over her head. Working with the pro helped her to not only pass 8th grade, but gave her the foundation for the even more difficult math she encountered in high school . Highly recommend this pro.

    About

As a successful college student , I am familiar with tips and tricks to improve my students' performance in the classroom. I ensure my clients understand not only HOW a problem is solved, but WHY it is solved that way. This allows them the basic understanding to figure out other problems by themselves. Apart from my one on one lessons, I am available to my clients via text messages to help with questions they might have for no extra cost.

    About

Hello, all! My name is Richard and I have been a math interventionist at a middle school for the past three years now. Initially, I started out tutoring my nephew who was struggling with math. Just recently, he received a "3" on his elementary FCat Math last year. This year, he is in the 5th grade; and I fully expect him to receive a "5" on the FCat Math because his comprehension and understanding has increased tremendously. I coached three sports at my middle school (wrestling, basketball and track) this year, and part of the eligibility requirement is a 2.0 grade point average (GPA). In the past, the team has struggled to keep its best athletes eligible, so I mandated tutoring for all the guys and girls who wanted to participate in the above-mentioned sports. This was a huge success. The extra help with homework, class assignments and test preparation kept the majority of my athletes eligible and able to play the sports they love. The scholastic achievement gained through understanding also cut down on classroom interruption and increased participation, which had an unintended effect on their conduct grades. As far as methodology is concerned, my process is simple: I break problems down to their simplest form and teach students step-by-step how to solve them. Different children struggle for different reasons; so it is imperative for me to solve each problem step-by-step so they know how to organize their work, making it easier for me to diagnose their struggles. There are no shortcuts to math, but there are different ways of attacking a problem. It can be tedious at times, but I require students to show all their work. As a teacher, it is my job to check your process -- not your right or wrong answer. A person can guess on multiple choice questions and get them right 25% of the time. Ensuring that you thoroughly understand the process of solving problems is what I check for, and this method has served me well over the years. I specialize in math tutoring for FCat, SAT, ACT, Algebra 1 EOC, and all middle school math disciplines. Whether you are in high school trying to pass your EOC, or in middle school trying to improve FCat scores or overall math competence, I am the tutor you are looking for. I utilize a variety of online learning tools such as Khan Academy and Tenmarks to assist with the educational process. This is the technology age, and all standardized testing will eventually be computerized, so getting kids use to learning and testing using technology is paramount. I look forward to hearing from you. Good luck with your studies!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
    • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
