Patricia was so helpful and worked right alongside me to create a more organized home office. She was very patient and hardworking. We also had a few good laughs together. I now have an uncluttered space using Patricia's advise will finally be able to go paperless. Patricia listened to my ideas and didn't pressure me to discard anything that was important to me. I'll be calling her again in the future to tackle other projects.

I have known Jackie for almost 20 years and she has always had amazing sense of style and flair. I was lucky enough to have her do an evaluation of what colors look best on me and wow... It made such a difference. Now when shopping, I immediately know which colors to gravitate to and which to completely stay away from. I highly recommend her!!!

I’m very pleased to provide my comments regarding Elvin’s performance as a professional organizer. We met through a common friend, who knew of my desperation to organize my home office. My first impression when I met you was; what an intelligent gentleman, so dependable, approachable and honest. I was immediately impressed by your interpersonal skills. As I explained what I wanted in my office, you kept suggesting options that would work for me, increasing my confidence and enthusiasm. The final results left me speechless. I had the office of my dreams, simple, organized, clean, and easy! Yes, everything was easy to find, everything had its space in such a style that it helps me to keep it this way. I very much appreciate what you did in my case and would highly recommend you to anyone. I am thankful for your initiative, creativity, interpersonal skills and your exceptional organization ability. I wanted to sell my starter home for quite some time. I thought it would be impossible, due to time constraints. I am a young, busy Dr. and do not have the time to organize, style and do everything necessary in order to sell it. I'm happy I found Jill Gold's House Styling & Staging of Parkland. She was very professional and had great ideas for getting my house sold. I had to de-clutter, freshen up, then she brought in furniture and accessories that made my home look like a model. I sold it quickly and got more money for it than I hoped for. Thanks again, Jill! -Dr. JM

A friend recommended Ana, who is very professional and did a great job selling our home, which saved us about $6,500 in home staging, and also got us an over the listing price offer within one week! We even hired her to help us decorate our new home! What a find!

Susan is the absolute best. She really cares about "her" people and finding the perfect match for you. She is tireless in her search and patient beyond measure. If it were not for her getting up early in the morning and going to work we would not have gotten the home we wanted. We would recommend her with the highest recommendation possible.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.
