Greetings - Word of mouth advertising is powerful. The consumer's experience with a product/service is paramount to the success or demise of a business. My recent experience with American Roofing of Jacksonville was profoundly satisfying. My family had recently sold our house and part of the deal was to get a new roof for the buyers. We were pinched for time as the required inspection and closing date rapidly approached. Dan Kinkel and his team of professional/expert roofers completed the job in less than 5 days on a 3,800 square foot home with several steep pitches!. Mr Kinkel oversees all aspects of the project and is hands-on as necessary to ensure a timely and correct install. American Roofing also protected my paver driveway with sheets of thick plywood before bringing in a dumpster for debris. The guys were very careful with disposing of the old roofing materials as I never found any items left on my property, especially nails! I couldn't be more satisfied with American Roofing of JAX. The inspection passed and the new owners love their new roof. Do yourself and your loved ones a favor - When a new roof or roof repairs are needed, find US Army veteran Dan Kinkel and his team with American Roofing of Jacksonville for a great experience and peace of mind. Just had our roof replaced a couple of weeks now. Will & the team at Carlson did a great job not only helping with the insurance company but with the installation & clean-up thru-out the two day replacement. They replaced some plywood decking on our Den roof, a few 1x6 roof strips on our House, (3) Roof Vents, (3) Vent Drain roof seals & ALL around the house 1x2's with 3" Metal Flashing finished off with Architectural Shingles. It looks GREAT ........ for another 25-30 years thank you.

It was necessary to replace our entire roof. Being new to Jacksonville we did not have any references or people to ask for recommendations. We did a LOT of reading and made MANY inquiries into roofing contractors in the Jacksonville area. We found Tier 1 Roofing through the Thumbtack service. Tier 1 was one of several comparable contractors we interviewed. The factor that stood out and closed the deal directing our decision to Tier 1 was the Project Manager, Chris McCorkle. Chris was exceptional is his knowledge and attentiveness to us as customers. There are many companies to choose from - when making a decision be sure to interview the prospective project manager. They last thing you want to deal with is an inaccessible, distant person or voice mail phone tag throughout the process. This was not the case with Chris. He was always available, respectful and went above the call of duty to make sure our project went well. The crew was quick, clean and accommodating. Chris patiently answered all our questions and quickly address any concern. Another key factor is Chris' readiness to take the bull by the horns in making sure we were completely satisfied with every step of the process. Tier 1 not only provided a stellar project manager in Chris, they offered several perks that none of the other vendors would even consider AND their pricing was competitive and reasonable. Our roof is gorgeous and we have no regrets in our decision to go with Tier 1. The owner Brent provides a very informative video on their website and a lot of good information about the roofing business. He also was kind and patient. He was accessible and willing to answer our questions as well, however, it truly due to Chris' professionalism and customer service that we chose Tier 1. We cannot say enough great things about this experience and will gladly talk to any prospective customers. We have other home improvements planned and have already decided we are checking with Chris McCorkle to see if the projects are within his scope or if he can recommend a company with his level of excellence and integrity. We are thankful for him.

Workmanship appears excellant. Had several issues with property damage (a bundle of shingles fell from roof and sheared off an outside spigot but repair was done quickly). More expensive than others but based on warranty, presentation and references appears to be worth it.

Bigfoot replaced my roof, installed gutters, and painted my home. It was a great experience beginning with the sales consultant showing up early for our first appointment, to the crew showing up on time everyday. There was nothing unexpected through the entire project, everything was communicated perfectly. We couldn't be happier with the work Bigfoot did on our home.

After the destruction from two powerful hurricanes, Matthew andIrma, my roof was in need of serious repair or replacement. When my attempts to patch up the several leaks with asphalt based sealants failed and the leaks became more widespread and frequent, I interviewed several roofing contractors as to my options and the costs involved, settling upon StormGuard and Bram because of the no-nonsense, honest, straightforward professional approach he conducted himself and presented my several available material options and related accessories. Although Bram estimated that the project from start to finish could be finished in one day, because of difficulties in removing the 3 layers of shingles and the old felt paper, and the removal and replacement of decayed wood rafters and decking, the work took 3 full days. On top of that, when the old rolled roofing was removed from above my bathroom, the ceiling collapsed, leaving a enormous hole in the structure and thick piles of debris throughout the bathroom, covering nearly except the bathtub. Bram kept me informed each and every step of the way, pointing out the ease and the extremely difficult parts of replacing my roof. The courtesy and professional care that Bram and each and every member of his crew exceeded my expectations by a very long shot, even though working in the near triple-digits heat and frequent thunderstorms. The StormGuard team arrived each day prior to the agreed-upon start time and started industriously at 7am, the appointed time and remained consistent until either the weather or darkness prevented going further, an unbelievable sense of dedication and service to me, the customer. I just wish that other contractors and their teams showed such a high level of respect as these StormGuard individuals did. All in all, StormGuard fixed everything wrong with my roof and made the roof look breathtaking beautiful, considering how ugly, deteriorated and difficult the replacement project turned out to be. Bram, the contractor worked with me regarding the extra expenses in completing the roofing project, knowing that I am on limited income and had no homeowners insurance coverage for such situations as this. I highly recommend StormGuard for anything having to do with a roof, without being high-pressured like dealing with some sleazy used car salesman. Bram and company provides expert evaluation, expedient professional work, and the most open and super competitive pricing structure of the nearly a dozens roofing professionals that I came into contact with regarding my old roof.

Was contacted by Empire Mitigation and Restoration 5 minutes after I requested an inspection. From there project manager Austin Skinner met me and let me know the inspection would take 30 minutes where he would document all damage that was caused by the storm and review it with me. Once complete we reviewed all damage and he informed me close to 40 percent of my roofing system was damaged and that my Insurance would cover a new roof with me only responsible for my deductible. I signed a contingency agreement allowing empire to speak to my insurance on my behalf in regards to the claim. It took a total two weeks and I now have a newly installed roof as well as a new fence that they proved was damaged by the storm as well. I highly recommend this company if you prefer 100 percent quality work and less stress through this process. Thank you Empire and Austin for all of your help.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

    • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
      • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
    • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
    • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
    • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
    • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
