There are not enough stars available to give to Chef Jeff. His food was delicious. the presentation was outstanding and he is quite personable. Everyone at the baby shower (40) wanted his card. Plenty of food to go around and lots of leftovers. Chef Jeff did an omelet station, a waffle station, a mimosa bar, pasta salad, assorted bagels, 2 types of cream cheeses, capers, onion, a regular salad, potatoes O'Brien and a pork loin. It was great. If I win the lottery I will hire him full time!

Chef Matthew was a delight to work with. He is personable, talented and very organized. He alleviated my apprehension of working with a new caterer early on due to his quick email, text, and phone responses. He provided an attractive Italian spread for my baby shower that was a big hit with my guests. He dropped it off on time and ready to serve. His prices are very reasonable making his drop-off catering services a viable option over the time and cost of doing it myself. Thanks Chef Matthew!

Doug and his crew were On time, Professional, food was outstanding!!! We had a baby shower for my son and daughter in law, (for our first grandchild). We live in Reno so I wanted it to be catered so I could concentrate on decorating and entertaining our guest. Everyone had a great time, especially me.

I stumbled upon Thumbtack while searching for a caterer for my sisters bridal shower and was so happy to have found Chef Tim! From the start, his responses were very quick, and he was very passionate about his work and the event he’d be working. We kept in touch regularly before the date to work out everything and then he arrived with enough time to be able to put a gorgeous spread of food out for us girls! Tim is very friendly, professional, food tasted as good as it looked and it was a pleasure to have him work my sisters event. A couple of my guests even asked for his information and business cards to hopefully hire him in the future as well! Thanks again Chef!

I hired Lori to cater my sister's bridal shower. We had a luau theme, and Lori came up with a great menu that fit the theme. Doreen and Bill were right on time and got right to work. They were awesome! They were friendly, polite to everyone, and kept the food coming! The bacon wrapped pineapple and mango chicken on the edible spoon were so yummy! Everyone loved them. The ladies also loved that the tails had been removed from the coconut shrimp, as we all struggle with how to bite them elegantly at parties, and then what to do with the tails? So, that was very thoughtful. Doreen and Bill had everything plated and ready to go right on time, and they filled anything that started to empty quickly and efficiently. I had the pistachio fish, which was so good. A lot of people had the chicken too. My grandmother said it was the best key lime pie she has ever had. Everyone I checked with said the food was very good, and many people asked for the caterer's name. I would definitely recommend Lori!

He also provided my tables/chairs rental needs and accommodated my last minute need of a case of champagne! He is a kind, caring, talented, skilled, and very professional man. I highly recommend him for all of your catering/event needs--he will not disappoint!

I had Pyllis come to my house for my sisters bridal shower. She instructed a group of 15 ladies on various baking activites. She was incredible, energetic, and made the event perfect! The group of girls had nothing but positive feedback and I look forward to using her again. If anyone is having a dinner party of event you need a chef I highly recommend her:))

Al and Gourmet Adventures came highly recommended and I was not disappointed. Gourmet Adventures catered a baby shower in April, 2015 for 30 guests. Al was very responsive and came up with a creative menu. I had many "foodies" at the party, as well as some very basic eaters, so I knew that food had to be varied and delicious. The food was wonderful and beautifully presented. Everything was timely and clean-up was spotless. I would recommend Al and Gourmet Adventures without hesitation.

I recently attended a baby shower catered by Kim Kerwin and I am pleased to have the opportunity to leave her a very positive review regarding her professional skills. The food presentation was stunningly unique and inviting to the eye. The food selection was well varied and the taste of each dish was delicious. There was a great hum of compliments from the quests. I highly recommend Kim Kerwin's catering for your next gathering. Let her do the work, while you relax and enjoy your guests.

Chef Joe provided a great service for me and my family. We hired him to cater my sisters baby shower, which we wanted to have in my yard. He took care of everything - he hooked up the tables, chairs, dishes..... he took care of the stuff that I hadn't even thought about - which was awesome, because I am not a party planner. More importantly the food was great. We hooked up an awesome menu of light apps to pick on and some trays of pasta & chicken. The apps were very creative and delish. There was this shrimp thing served in avocados with mango that everyone went wild for. The eggplant and mac and cheese were addictive. The only complaints that I received were that people ate too much and felt fat.......which to me means that the party was a success! My sister loved everything. Highly Recommend!!

Anna and Love Well Kitchen are amazing. She catered my baby shower and it was truly unique and delicious. I got so many compliments about the food. In addition, Anna and her staff's service were great! I've also had Love Well's food at a pop up Brunch at Social House in Lake Worth. The food is always outstanding.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

      • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
      • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
      • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
      • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
      • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
