First thing I like is that Juan comes right on time. When he says he'll be there in the next 30 minutes, expect for him at your doorstep at that exact time. He will let you to go with him so that you'll know what's wrong with your unit. He'll explain you the trouble at a level that you would easily understand. The most important part is that he will charge you very REASONABLY! He is a certified HVAC technician and his own business is licensed and insured. So whatever happens to your property while he's doing the job, you both have it covered. Thank you very much Juan! My dog and I will sleep quietly tonight (and the coming nights). Your service and professionalism are highly recommendable!

Derrick did a great job at a very reasonable price. Most important -- he recognized a major flaw in the current HVAC installation and proposed the best alternative solution, as confirmed by another expert.

We are a retail company and we have three stores at Key West. Two of our stores have had problem with the AC units (leak and blowing hot air). We could not find a decent hvac tech but I am so glad we found Paul. He worked the extra mile, he even worked on the weekend for us. Problem solved within two days and he was very detailed about finding out the problem and the solution. We will for sure be in contact with him again in the future. Thank you so much Paul!

Tony and his crew installed a brand new home cooling system. He and his team were very professional and worked diligently for a full 7 hours to remove the old system and replace it with the new system at a price nearly half that of other quotes in our area. I plan to call Tony for regular maintenance and any other HVAC situation we may run into in the future. They paid attention to all of the major and minor details including the aesthetics of the painting and plumbing of areas around the unit.

Not sure how I missed writing a review for this amazing company! I would give 10 stars, out of 5, if I could. From the minute he showed up, he explained EXACTLY why I had been having the same issue (hired 3 other companies and NOT ONE took the time to HELP ME) This amazing man took the time to not only Fox my problem, but tell me WHY and what I can do to fix it. Unfortunately, the previous company, that installed the unit initially, did a crappy job and now I’m stuck with this mess. He even guided me through the legality of trying to sort through my rights with that. I’ll end up replacing my unit and I will ONLY use this company for any of my HVAC needs. He’s not only honest and fair, he’s a GOOD PERSON and that is hard to find these days.

Ben is very knowledgeable about HVAC's. He was the only Co. out of 6 Co's who bid on my job to personally visit with me & look at the system I had in order to make an accurate estimation of what we needed for the home. He does very detailed & high quality work. And he's on time! Highly recommend Neat Heat & Air. Attractive pricing on the best equipment. 1st Class. This guy will be successful. Thanks Ben!

Steve is a great guy. He put my AC in early and move other non-critical appointments because we were without air. My husband is 80 and really needs the air. Great job and went above & beyond. Steve gave me the estimate himself so there was no surprises and extra costs. His price was very fair and the work was fast. THANK YOU STEVE!!!!!

I put in a Thumbtack request after my HVAC stopped working and I’d tried multiple DIY troubleshooting methods. DC/AC was the first company to respond, and they literally responded within minutes on a Sunday afternoon. I called them and spoke with the Senior Technician Stephan and he was there within two hours, not to mention he had another job before me. Stephan was very personable and made me feel like family. He knows his craft and wouldn’t leave until he knew I had air. I would definitely recommend them to anyone with HVAC issues. I wouldn’t use anyone else at this point. Plus they have the most reasonable prices. They are a good honest company that provides old school customer service, quality and pricing.

We love the folks at Aurora Air, Inc. !!! We recently moved to Florida and, right after settling into our new home, we contacted them to come and inspect our two HVAC units. They did a wonderful job at a very reasonable price. We were so impressed with them that we immediately set up an annual service contract with them. Good thing we did too. About 6 months after first having them come out, one of our A/C units went on the fritz. It happened on a very hot Saturday. No problem though! Jose sent one of his guys over first thing and by lunchtime they had us up-and-running. We also got a very nice discount on the service since we have our annual service contract with them. Yup ... great company run by a great guy!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
