I needed a deck built on the back of my house and Ryan and his crew did a great job. They worked on my schedule, finished the job quickly (just 1 day), and left my backyard spotless. I'd use them again.

Thank you American decorating and granite pros We moved to long boat key nearly two years ago; unsure of who to use we found your company by accident. Your installer was working on a plantation shutter install and we had asked if he could adjust blind for us and he graciously came over and did this in just minets. But it turned out to be the owner Stephen; He gave us a card and then described his other buisness Granite pro's kitchen & bath We had estimates from several companies by this time but that little favor stuck in our mind. Well the end result was great and the cost was lowere then the other bids I saved at least $1000. My job took 8 weeks and that included order time. About 3 weeks of install included removing my tub, installing a custom glass door and great tile work. Ask any one at the long boat key club who has used American and Granite Pro's. Great job, competitive and creative. They cleaned up every 4 hours or so. Good idea. Thanks again Sincerely Evette C

Freeman Enmeier is a complete professional. He came in to our commercial construction (church building) after having to fire a previous general contractor. We had lost over 7 months and thousands of dollars. The church was desparate. In came Freeman, fixed the mess and went above and beyond the call of duty. He tirelessly worked with myself, our architect, the city, and all our subcontractors with excellence in mind. Because of his diligence we received a grant award for coming in on schedule. At the end of the project he not only came in on time, but to our surprise UNDER budget. He actually passed on his savings to us. What a class act. We not only got a building but gained a friend. I have already asked him to be my personal contractor for my new home. I would recommend Freeman Enmeier for any project large of small. As he says... He bids the job, he DOES the job.

Michael Ford did a few jobs in my house. He tiled my living room floor. He tiled the back splash area in the kitchen. He also painted the garage floor with a special epoxy paint that had colored sprinkles in the paint. I was very satisfied with his work. He was fast, neat, and at a reasonably price.

My wife and I purchased a 1910 built house that needed an additional bathroom and porch converted into a laundry/mud room. Greg did a fantastic job meeting our requirements, holding his subs accountable and going above and beyond to help with other tasks outside the initial agreed job. I have actually contracted Greg for a commercial job next and look to use him on many future projects. He provides excellent work and a great work ethic.

John Reece was a pleasure to work with on home remodel including complete kitchen remodel, new floors, relocating front door and windows and updates to bathroom. John shared great insights for ideas at every stage of the project. His professionalism and communication were key, as we were working with him from out of state. As with any remodel, expected to find things along the way and he had great ideas - both quality and affordable options. His work is high quality and was ahead of schedule. We are thrilled with the results and highly recommend John Reece & Associates.

Wow!!!! From the immediate response, same day service, quality and professionalism you can't go wrong. Sal and Mike came to help me hang pictures ...may sound silly but as a single woman with lots of pictures I needed Help! NOT only were the everything listed above but they have an amazing eye for placement, style and design. I accepted their quote thinking I'd finally get some pictures hung and after a quick couple of hours I have an amazing layout of all my pictures including collage walls and hard To hang items. The were fast but exceptionally efficient, quality driven AND they were friendly and comfortable to chat with! Sal mentioned having been raised by an interior design mom And it showed. I will Absolutely be calling them again!

We were working under a deadline to complete needed home renovations for an upcoming event at our house. Mike made a special effort to get his crew in to work around our schedule, other contractors schedules, and still get the job done a day earlier than his estimate. His workers were professional and polite and we appreciated their efforts to do a good, timely job. Mike's estimate was fair and accurate and he provided us with evidence of licensure and insurance as we requested with the estimate.

I hired Robert to install a new front door on my home. Robert was extremely professional, on time and did an excellent job. My threshold and frame were not straight so Robert went above the scope of work and fixed my door so it was perfectly in line. The door open and closes perfectly now and the price was excellent. I will use Robert for any home repair issues I need in the future and was very satisfied with my experience.

Clint Fowler is serious about his work and buliding a good relationship with his clients. He recently repaired and replaced exterior rotten wood and windows and then painted the whole house. He has also done some interior work for me before this project. In both cases I found him to be experienced, reliable, efficent and trustworthy. He and his team took great care in the work they did on my house. His fees are very reasonable. My home is so pretty it looks like new again. He really takes pride in his work and took great care in cleaning up the mess they made when the project was complete. I would highly recommend him to anyone that needs home repairs done. He did an excellent job and I am a happy customer! I will call on him again in the future.

Edward Valiente was a pleasure to work with in every way. My wife and I had a vision for a custom project that required knowledge of local permitting and building codes, as well as modern construction concepts. The construction process in Temple Terrace, Florida is notoriously complicated, but Edward made the whole experience flow as smoothly as can be. His work has great attention to detail and his communication with the customer is top notch. I would not hesitate to work with him again and wholeheartedly recommend him to others.

Shenandoah Maintenance performed interior painting in my home on 2 occasions. The job was done within an 8 hour time frame both time. Paul delivered great customer service and advised me ahead of time with the pros and cons of paint selections. He was prompt with all the necessary tools to complete the work and did so at a great price. I am very pleased with the paint job and love the new look of my home. I highly recommed Paul and would use him again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
