Rose has been a pleasure to work with. Her knowledge and patience has exceeded my expectations. She is what a real dog trainer should be. I have spent a lot of money in the past with others with no end result and after just a short time I have already seen great results that continue even after she leaves our home. My Pitbull and Bull Dog love her and are growing to have much better manners. We are very grateful for the work she has put into the training and educating us to be better owners. Will recommend to friends and family without a doubt!

Highland Canine Training was very fast to respond to my search for training. We are currently pending to have a free evaluation of my dog, pending vacation completions on both parts. I was given alot of information prior to setting the evaluation which I appreciate the knowledge of the laws that they have.

There aren't enough good things I could say about Angel and her work with our Baylee girl. Still in her "puppy" stage, Baylee came with a lot of energy, excitement, and curiosity. Angel was able to use all of that in a constructive way to help Baylee learn some boundaries. Thankfully Angel was very open with communication and sent updates frequently which was a big ease on our minds because we felt we could trust Angel, even not knowing a whole lot about her beforehand. We picked up our Vizsla yesterday and there is a huge difference in discipline. Obviously the first week back with us will be the most challenging, but if we do our part, there's no doubt in my mind that these new "tricks" will stick for good. We highly recommend Angel as a loving and hard working dog trainer.

Jeanine is an exceptionally patient, knowledgeable and compassionate dog trainer. Jeanine has trained two of our Portuguese Water Dogs over the past 11 years . We have utilized Jeanine's services for private training, group classes, personal and professional advice. Jeanine's been very flexible with our training and even provided sessions in my husband's office-she's very accommodating. Jeanine's demeanor, along with even her own dog's temperaments, lend itself to successful training. Jeanine has visited our home, provided suggestions for new puppy transitions as well as acclimating our elder PWD to the new puppy. Jeanine also provides numerous resources for various holistic and superior pet products. We highly recommend Jeanine for a comprehensive, passionate canine expert! Thank you Jeanine for your insight over the past 11 years!

With five dogs in our house, it took us a long time to decide on a mobile pet care company who could truly listen and mold themselves to our situation. Other companies would try to 'take charge' and tell us how they will only work. Bruce listened to what we wanted and needed and gave us just that. In the end, there are many passionate pet care companies but they aren't thorough. With Bruce, he got the job and kept us up with his truly amazing text messages about our animals and how excited he was to be working with us to care for our dogs. That's the key, "working with us", not so much for us. Bruce makes you feel like he's a friend, and after he was done with our sessions for the week, my wife and I spoke in great detail about that. In the end, you can leave your animal with anyone... I won't. I'm not an easy sell. I trust very few people with my dogs, I'm one of those dog people with no kids... (by choice). What matters in the end is TRUST. Period. You will get that with Bruce... and some really great, in-depth text updates! haha... believe it or not, when you're hundreds of miles away, it helps you sleep by putting a smile on your face, and an ease to your worry. Thanks Groovy Dogs!

Michael Chapman of the Sit Means Sit - Saratoga dog training franchise kept Zoe (our 18 week old female standard poodle) for a two week 'board and train' experience. While there our Zoe was around other dogs and spent a great deal of time going places with Michael while learning to obey commands. The experience was positive for Zoe and for us! She is much easier to walk with and listens to and obeys many commands readily. We plan to continue to reinforce the training with classes that are available twice weekly at the Sit Means Sit facility and are enjoying online info that is made available. We are convinced that the process/system is the best, fastest manner to train a dog. And, are becoming vocal 'salespersons' for Sit Means Sit.

I had just gotten my nearly 1-year-old puppy and realized she was showing aggressive tendencies toward people and other animals in addition to submissive peeing. In a matter of weeks Brett has my dog on the right track. He was the only trainer we had a consultation with that started off showing genuine interest and care for my dog, as well as a energetic, take-control attitude. I would highly recommend Dog-Eze.

Robin is by far the most experience dog trainer I have ever met. She made the crate and potty training for my 9 weeks old puppy like a breeze. I followed Robin guideline religiously and after one week, my puppy was totally house broken and running to the door for potty. My puppy slept in her crate for 7 to 8 hours, walking well for the puppy on the leash in less than a week. . Robin has been there for us anytime we had question. She is so caring that I feel she is my best friend not just a trainer. If you want to enjoy your puppy without any extra stress, just call her. You won't regret it.

We brought a new puppy in to our home with two other dogs, an Aussie and a Lab. From day one they did not take to our new puppy. The lab was highly aggressive to her and also was becoming aggressive towards us. My husband said that was a big NO NO and I needed to get rid of our lab (3 yrs). I cried for a week before deciding maybe he was right - nothing was working and I was scared he would soon land a fatal bite to the puppy. My vet said he wished we had a dog whisperer like like Cesar Millan in our area. In desparation I went online and typed in Dog Whisperer asking God to give me a miracle. He did! I saw Will Thomas' web site and called him. He answered my call that night, spoke to me for over and hour, and we set up an appointment for that weekend. I am amazed at the results. It wasn't necessarily my dogs but me, and how I interacted with them. My husband balked when I first told him about the appointment saying he'd believe it when he saw it. He now believes and tells all our friends the story and change in our dogs. The lab and puppy are now best buddies, I am no longer stressed out and our home is much happier. He made a difference in just a few hours! Of course we had to follow through with the exercises he showed us for a couple weeks and now everything is second nature. -Riverview, FL

Caroline did exceptional work with an aggressive shelter dog that had potential but needed to relax around people and other dogs. It worked: Athena was adopted about 6 months ago and is settled and happy in a wonderful forever home where she's cared for, loved and appreciated.

Lane Carter Dog Trainer

Lane has a true understanding of dogs. I Met lane walking around downtown Dunedin when my GSD (German Shepherd dog) was about 4 months old(about a year ago). We spoke of a mutual love for the breed and how both of our grandparents were involved in K9 training (my grandfather was a k9 judge). Lane never pushed a service our a sales pitch on me he asked me some questions about my GSD. I let him know I was working with a trainer but at times my puppy seemed to rule us. He then told me he moved to the area and is training dogs here and if i ever needed help to call him (His expertise includes guard dogs, behaviors, advance training). During the past year we still were working with the original trainer who was very good as well. Something was missing though and we both felt that we taught my GSD everything we could but, he had a hurdle. You see my GSD would see other dogs and become over stimulated and hard to control and this started at about 7 months old ( He is a very intelligent and high drive GSD who's a sweetheart but stubborn.). He would jump on everybody not listen and tend to be just a brat. With dogs though he would bark aggressively and scare other people even though he just wanted to play he also seemed to be scared of them. So my trainer said let's take some time off and figure out something later. My wife and I talked about how he just needed to age and mellow but I felt this could not wait. I also mentioned how we met Lane and we should call him, but we were feeling a little discouraged and felt it may be better to wait. The next afternoon on the way to the beach I saw Lane walking two dogs and told my wife it's a sign let's just call him and try it. Lane gave us a free consultation that was over an hour. He then gave us his feedback and gave us pricing that was very competitive to any big box store but his is one on one. The difference with Lane though has been dramatic already, he truly has a passion and love for his career. After just a few weeks my GSD has improved with not only his old training but new training as well. My GSD is walking better on leash, reacting less and learning to be a companion and not pushing to be an alpha. Lanes knowledge of reading a dog has been honed since a young age and it shows. My GSD not only loves to go to training but now acts as if Lane is part of the family. My GSD is calmer and now looks for me to command him. We are not perfect by any means (its only been 4 weeks) but I truly believe with Carters k9s my GSD will be perfect and a dog that my grandfather would adore. Ask about the tree stump!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

        • What type of training methods do you use?
        • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
        • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
