Chris is without a doubt the best instructor I have ever worked with. He simplifies the golf swing and doesn't have you thinking about a 100 things every time you hit the ball. I highly recommend!!

I am a 71 year old male with a long history of playing recreational golf. By that I mean I would play as often as I could but not steadily until I retired, after which I tried to play about two times a week. I enjoyed the regular get together with the guys, played well enough to be competitive, and the game was the common thread for everyone in the group to be socially active off the course. During the last year or so my game has been deteriorating to the point that I was seriously thinking about walking away from golf. My Driver deserted me entirely. My short game was holding together but even that started to fail me in recent months. It wasn't fun anymore and it felt like I was going to work instead of going to play every time "golf day" came around. I was mentally and physically done with the game but did not really want to just quit. OK! Even though I had spent more money on lessons and new improved golf clubs than I want to admit over the years, I decided to invest in lessons one final time. This was do or die time for me and I am very glad I did. Say hello to Tony Weiher and "Thoughtless Golf". Tony helped me significantly during our very first lesson together. No 108 steps to the perfect swing! No 12 club positions on the road to breaking 80! No blah, blah, blah! You really can not remember all that stuff in the time it takes to complete a golf swing! Tony's mantra--keep it simple, maintain a good setup, and go! Simple process, no mind numbing things to remember just allow yourself to relax! Within a very few minutes he had me back on track and my golf swing and ball striking started to improve--"thoughtlessly". His positioning is strong positive reinforcement of the good stuff and forget about the mistakes. In addition, Tony uses video during and after each session to permit you to see what he sees thus keeping the conversation on track with meaning and purpose. No technical rubbish, just purposeful instruction. I am looking forward to my next session with Tony and I strongly recommend you give yourself the opportunity to enjoy golf again by calling on Tony and "Thoughtless Golf".

Kevin has a wealth of knowledge on the golf swing. When I developed a hook with my driver, a small change in my grip fixed the problem in one half hour session.

Over the last 10 years, Larry has been a great friend and mentor, taking genuine interest in helping me improve not only my golf swing but overall approach to playing better golf. The foundation of his teaching, learning to swing the golf club in a circle around a fixed swing center is easy to visualize, understand and supported by Larry's extensive knowledge of the essential biomechanics and physics law needed to produce solid golf shots and build consistency. Larry will help you enjoy golf more...Juniors to seniors and everyone in between! -Erich M. New Jersey

“I have known Chip for over 15 years. He is a great instructor and an even better person. When I first worked with Chip I had not been playing golf regularly due to an injury and my handicap was about a 15. In one season, we brought my handicap down to a 10 and I have been as low as a 5 during our time together. Chip’s instruction is not limited to just the golf swing, he has help me with all aspects of my game. Additionally, to having extensive knowledge of the full swing and short game, he is skilled at using today’s technology to further help someone improve their game. I highly recommend Chip as a golf instructor” – Fred R.

My husband has been playing golf all his life and I have (for all intents and purposes) never picked up a club. Needless to say, we have very different abilities. Yet Glenn has been able to teach both of us at the same time with instruction appropriate for each of our levels. He is a very engaging and enthusiastic golf professional and makes you want to improve your game and/or continue to learn how to play. He notices the little things that hinder your performance and gives you guidance (along with a LOT of encouragement) to help you accomplish your goals. He makes you want to keep coming back again and again. Not only is he an outstanding instructor, he is also very knowledgeable about golf equipment such as regripping clubs or whether your clubs are improperly weighted. We have learned so much from our few lessons and have been having fun at the same time. Can’t wait for our next lesson!! Ellen and Bob H.

Bobbyp had visual aides which help me realize the proper body club head and swing alignment. He adjusted my grip and got me to understand the proper club face angle, which I had to steep so I could not get the height needed to drop the ball where I wanted as apposed to shooting it across the green. In 1 hr. I was hitting it straight at my target and with elevation. Working on those things Bobbyp taught me will have a positive effect on my game. Thanks Bobbyp.

Thanks coach Jess for helping me feel more confident on the golf course! I went from whispering "dont miss it" to "I got this" very quickly. I love that I am hitting through the ball more consistently and NOT the ground. That really hurt! My entire swing feels so much better! I am having a lot more fun on the course because of your coaching. I look forward to another golf workout with you

I had the most incredible 2 lessons with coach Steve . Before taking a lesson I always sliced the ball and just after 1 lesson with coach Steve and he was making me hit the ball straight and even have some draws on my shots! He is one of a kind when it comes to understand and explaining the right way to swing the golf club. If your like me and are trying to improve your golf swing then coach Steve is the only instructer to see !

In all my years of golf lessons, I've never met an individual that was able to help grow my game without forcing his or her ideas on me. She truly has a passion for the game that makes you appreciate the sport more, and is a very patient and knowledgeable golf instructor. I've seen a considerable improvement in my swing, and I go back for lessons twice a year. The results feel almost immediate, and it's only too bad that I can't have her out on the course with me every time I play!

Donna Serino is a true Professional. I've had the pleasure of being a student of hers for over a year now. She has a way of teaching that is easy to understand, and utilizes simple drills to perfect a repeating golf swing. Donna has a range of students from beginners, to scratch both male and female. She exhibits great patience, care and communication with her students. She truly wants to make them better so they can enjoy golf for the great game that it is. Her passion, however, I must say is with children. She loves teaching golf to the kids. This shows in her great success as the girls golf coach for American Heritage High School Delray. The last thing about Donna that is very important is her years of study and teaching under the watchful eye of Hall of Fame Golf Instructor Bob Toski. Donna models herself after his teaching style, which to me, makes her one of the top golf instructors in the area. Ted Gardner

Chris has a great eye for catching flaws and highlighting how to correct them. He is very patient and explains the flaw, how to correct it within the limit of your swing. Additionally, Chris discusses exercise routines that will help accentuate the positive fix. Chris is very sociable which makes it easier to work with him. I would recommend Chris to golfers of all ages and skill. He is a great professional and teacher.

Pete has an excellent grasp of the golf swing fundamentals and can convey them in a very understandable manner. He is an accomplished player himself and can help in all aspects of the game (he helped me improve my putting dramatically). He also focuses on the mental side, which is a significant factor in good play for all levels of students. In addition, Pete's rates for lessons are extremely reasonable and the "bang for the buck" is outstanding.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What makes a good golf instructor?

A good golf instructor is someone who has the playing skill you’d like to achieve, is qualified to teach golf, and is someone you can get along with. Some experts recommend you only take golf lessons from coaches with active accreditation from reputable associations such as the PGA, LPGA, or similar organizations that focus on continuing education. You’ll be spending hours out on the green with the pro during lessons, so a good rapport, strong communication and the right personality fit are key. A proven track record is also important. Read reviews from their current and former students to make sure they have helped people achieve their golfing goals, and always ask about the instructor’s experience before signing on for lessons. Years of providing lessons can contribute to a deeper understanding of how to teach the sport. Just because your friend or partner is great at golf doesn’t mean they’ll give good golf lessons. Invest in a professional golf instructor who knows how to teach the sport from short game to full swing.

How much are golf lessons?

Golf lessons are a great way to break into the sport or take your golf game to a new level. The national average cost for golf lessons is $50-$60, but prices will vary based on what type of lessons you want. The most expensive golf lessons will be private instruction with top-tier coaches. These are golf instructors who have held high professional ranking and have a good reputation. Regardless of who is teaching, private instruction is always more costly than couples’ lessons or small group lessons (usually up to four people). Teachers often offer a lower price per lesson when you buy a package of several lessons at one time. Here are some examples of average golf lesson costs:

  • Individual lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 60-minute private lesson: $60.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $100.
  • Couples’ lessons:
    • Standard pricing for 90-minute duo lesson: $100.
    • 60-minute lesson with renowned golf coach: $125.
  • Golf lesson package pricing:
    • Purchase six individual lessons at one time and save $10.
    • Purchase 10 individual lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase six couples’ lessons at one time and save $40.
    • Purchase 10 couples’ lessons at one time and save $200.

What age should you start golf lessons?

Golf lessons for kids can start as early as age four or five. They’re too young for formal training, but you can keep them interested and engaged and give them a feel for the game. U.S. Kids Golf recommends starting formal training for junior golfers at six years old. It’s important for young golfers to swing clubs that are the right length and weight for their body; U.S. Kids Golf provides a fitting guide.

Golf lessons for kids, especially young kids, should be about encouraging success rather than correcting mistakes, according to U.S. Kids Golf. If you want your child to love golf for life, you want their early experiences to be positive. Golf lessons for kids are less expensive than golf lessons for adults. A monthly rate (including four lessons) for group golf lessons for kids may average $100. Semi-private golf lessons for kids may range from $150 to $200 per month. Location and instructor reputation can also affect cost. Often, discounts are provided when multiple months are purchased at one time.
