Great company! They are very friendly and most importantly the food was delicious! The caterers created my menu custom to my needs, wants and visions. They forgot a few things and there were a couple hiccups in the road but they fixed them immediately and in the end, it all ran smoothly! I'm glad I chose them as my caterers.

Danielle and Kelly were outstanding. They arrived when they said they would be here and handled all aspects of the party from food prep, welcoming the guests, drinks, clean up, etc. Service was outstanding. They are professional and personable. I highly recommend them. We will use them every time we have a event or party. They made it so easy for us to relax and enjoy our guests.

As this was our first go-around without our mother who ran the best Christmas kitchen ever, we decided to look into catering which then led us to the "private chef" concept offered by Jeffrey Sternberg who owns and operates Rosemary and Thyme Catering. Jeffrey was one of 3 caterers who offered their services through Thumbtack, and right from his online presence, we knew that Jeffrey would be the one who would come through on the home-cooked feel we were seeking. One phone call led to an invitation to his home where we were regaled with samples of his work ... now that is service for you! Planning out the meals was a collaborative effort where we told Jeffrey about all our traditional fare over the 3-day feast with Jeffrey being most accommodating to our habitual dishes but all the while making recommendations here and there which we gladly accepted ... it was a very easy and enjoyable process. Everything was delicious, truly surpassing our expectations. There were even several batches of shortbread made up for our inspection before choosing the version that best matched the type of shortbread we were accustomed to. The cauliflower and celery casseroles were actually better than we had ever made ourselves and the filet roast of beef for the day after Christmas was without a doubt the best we'd ever tasted. If there was any negative to be found, it was simply in that there was way more food prepared for us than we could ever expect to eat ... we froze the leftovers and are still enjoying the odd Jeffrey meal ... talk about getting excellent value for your money! The only exception to the quantity was the gravy that only lasted the one meal of Christmas dinner. And Jeffrey also surprised us with plenty of extras like a 4th appetizer that we had not ordered, dips that we had not ordered for the appetizers, and mayo and mustard spreads for our sandwiches, and the killer was an extra turkey roasted in the oven in case we did not end up being fond of the grilled turkey that he recommended. The one hitch was that the re-heating instructions did not specify "convection" or take into account that all six dishes were to be reheated in the oven simultaneously, so the food was not ready when we were led to believe it would be, but it was well worth the wait in the end because everything was outstanding. Service, service, service ... that is what Jeffrey is all about ... and he really knows what he's doing ... you can just relax or else spend the time you save in the kitchen fretting over more interesting Christmas activities ... Thanks so very much to you Jeffrey ... you saved the Holidays for us ... the best to you and your family in 2016. Lorri H. Jan 07/16

I hired Paul and The Dancing Palate for my wedding on November 20, 2015. Paul was wonderful from the start. We had a tasting right away and it went wonderfully. I had contact more than half a dozen caterers but couldn't get them to be as flexible as Paul was especially for the price. The Dancing Palate is a fantastic value. The food was served on time, warm, and I got many compliments after the wedding. We had 135 guests and a 90 minute sit down dinner. I wanted family style with items served in bowls and sharing, yet sit down at the same time. I didn't find many caterers that would do that, but Paul understood me and it was perfect. A real family meal at our rustic classic wedding. I was very happy with the Dancing Palate and if I had to plan my wedding all over again would hire him back.

David and his team were prompt, professional and served up a delicious spread for our bachelor party group of 24 in our rented house. His pricing is very competitive, with an exhaustive list of menu options, while also being very flexible to the fact that the bachelor has a gluten intolerance. Highly recommend.

I'm a former food writer and Chef Traci is my go-to guy for the best and freshest foods. He creatively (and deliciously) accommodates food allergies and restrictive diets. And I appreciate that he sources foods locally. I and the whole staff used to frequent his restaurant in Stuart. I can't recommend him highly enough. Shelley Owens

So Fresh and Tasty!!! For 3 years now, Chef Elisa caters for my Dance Center’s twice annual recital and rehearsal lunches. Every lunch for my close to 100 hungry dance students are always so fresh and tasty. I don’t know how she does it, but my dancers always feel refreshed and energized. She even pays special attention to the few dancers that require gluten free and have allergies. The students love her food, I think she spoils them with her from scratch chocolate chip cookies and healthy seasoned popcorn bags. She’s really 10 stars, but they stop me at 5. Can't say thank you enough to Chef Michael for the outstanding service he and Nancy provided for my daughter's bridal shower. I have never worked with a chef before but my husband encouraged me to look for someone to take some of the pressure off. Speaking with Chef Michael we created a simple brunch menu for around 25 guest and everyone was very impressed with not only the amount of flavor in every bite, but also in the presentation. I myself have an allergy to garlic and I also had gluten free guests. Chef Michael was able to provide everyone with delicious food that met their dietary restrictions without lose of flavor or presentation. I would most definitely work with Culinary Artz again without hesitation. Extremely professional and efficient from beginning to end. Thank you Chef!!

we had contacted Julie of Jx3 Events to run our daughters Bat Mitzvah. We had left most of the details to the last minute and had nothing planned. JX3 came on and was able to put the entire party together in a matter of weeks. When we walked into the room we were blown away.it was awesome beyond anything we had planned for. The dj took control and ran the party from the moment we got there.Everyone raved over what a great party and how much fun they had.Thank you Julie for making everything special and stress free. Even the venue commented on how great they were to work with

Very professional team. Extremely efficient, organized, creative and caring to every little detailed demanded from the customer. Grapes & Olives catered our wedding this June (2018) which was 100% organic, vegan, soy and gluten free. It cannot get more demanding than that and they pulled off the most delicious and varied buffet. They blew all the guest away. I would recommend them to anyone for any type of event. Chef Davolazala is an amazing culinary master! He is the only one I trust to handle all gatherings, whether it’s a bridal shower, a wedding for 200 people, a birthday party, a barbecue, or an intimate private dining experience. Not only does he know his way around the kitchen for whatever type of cuisine is requested, but he takes it a step further when he compliments each perfect bite with an equally amazing mixology pairing. Above and beyond the quality of his food, the Chef is incredibly personable and attentive to all the small details, making him a party planner’s dream partner. Thank you chef!

Marc was FABULOUS! He was very easy to work with and very flexible in creating a menu for diverse Jewish family group of 16. THE FOOD WAS DELICIOUS. Chicken, brisket, sweet potatoes, kugel, veggies: All outstanding! Marc provided the linens and a server. (The kids wanted to go home with Crystal.) Part of the meal was served at the table, part was buffet (served by Marc and Crystal) - all to rave reviews, including the four children under 8. Last minute, we requested a sugar free dessert for a diabetic family member which became a big hit. Marc and his team did the clean up and left our condo's 'Club Room' spotless. DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
    • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
    • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
    • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

    • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
    • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
    • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
    • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
    • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
