When I use these descriptions of work quality and professionalism, I’m specifically referring to the two movers, Saxton and Branden (spelling), not the company itself. While they arrived 1.5 hours late, they were courteous and professional and got to work as soon as they got a lay of what needed to be loaded first. My description of work quality and professionalism does not apply to the coordination or dispatch. I didn’t find the company proactive in telling me that my original 8am start time would be moved to 9am. I only found out when I called the day before to confirm everything. And then, no notice that the movers would be late arriving at the new time. And then not calling back promptly when I left messages asking where they were. Also, not accurately judging the time the project would take. Quoted 2 hours yet it took four. I would say logistics need improvement yet the work itself is fine.

I had a great experience with LA Muscle Movers. The movers came 15 mins before appointment and moved stuff quickly. My 1 bed room was moved in less than 2 hours. I would recommend these guys.

My fiance and I were a bit hesitant to book a moving service but we lived on the third floor of our apartment and when we saw the rates for Mike's Moving we decided to give it a try. We'd only pay a little more for movers than a Uhaul and we'd save time and energy! The movers were fantastic-very professional, broke everything down and handled everything with great care. They really worked hard especially moving our things down three flights of stairs! The movers were friendly, pleasant and got the job done very quick. They moved our 2 bedroom apartment 20-30 minutes away into a house and got the job done in less than 2.5 hours. We were downright amazed! I would hire these guys again in a heartbeat. My only concern was that while Mike's Moving was fantastic booking me just a few days in advance because we were moving a bit last minute, we didn't know what time to expect them as they said 'afternoon' and would not give me a better time frame. However, this may be because we booked only days in advance and the job before us may have been unclear. The movers were very nice to give us a call 45 minutes ahead of time-they were quite early! Mike had told us afternoon and the movers arrive minutes after 12:00-we were a bit rushed at the end! However, it is better to be early in my opinion, my only piece of advice is to try to give a better time frame but again this may have been due to our last minute move. Overall, a great bunch of guys, and as someone who has never hired movers before that was very nervous to do so, I can say with confidence I would not at all hesitate to call these movers again.

So happy I chose Embrey's for my movers. The booking process was easy and quick. Steve answered all of my questions and was so flexible as our move details changed a few times, even as late as the night before! The guys showed up and were very polite and professional and positive. We moved during hurricane Hermain and the guys never had a negative comment! They moved all our items in 3.5 hours which was super quick for the amount of stuff we have, also considering they padded and wrapped the couches and bedroom furniture to avoid damage. So pleased! Highly recommend and will def use again for next move!

BAM, Cash and Alan were great! Handled all of my furniture and items with care and helped set up everything how I wanted it. The only small thing that is worth noting is that I had requested tv boxes and mattress covers when i set everything up (agreeing to pay the extra fees for them), but somehow this was not communicated to the movers so they didnt have them upon arrival. With this said, they still handled my items with care and they were fine without the boxes/covers. Just worth mentioning for those who are really needing/wanting these things....still worth 5 stars though aside from this minor set back. THANK YOU!

Destiny answered all my questions and made it really easy to schedule. The movers, Maurizio & Kwai, were friendly and showed the utmost care when moving a really tall, heavy 2-part piece of antique furniture in my house. It was a simple task, but they didn't take any risks which really reassured me. No bumps, nicks or even a scratch on the floor. Thanks, guys!

First off let me say Excellent movers! The movers arrived on time, they took extra care of my stuff. They were polite, and very professional. The manager Austin moved me before, it’s unfortunate he can’t do moves personally anymore. I didn’t have any problems with them. I would definitely recommend this company!

I was terrified after hearing some of the stories about moves gone wrong. I think that it is equally important to write about services when they go well and give crew where credit is due so I want to thank Pick Up Movers for a job well done. All my furniture made it intact. They helped moving industry regain my trust in them with their great service. Kudos to Frank for overseeing the move, you were great and a true professional.

These folks care about doing a great job. They came with all the materials to make the move both quick (dollies, blankets, rubber bands -- ready to stack boxes, move things quickly). Meanwhile, they very carefully wrapped and took care of glass shelves, an old sewing machine, dishes, an oversized armoir. Perfect job. Ok, the only complaint was other neighbors in our building kept stopping the crew to ask them for their business cards!! Yes, they were that good. They took all the pain out of what might have been a challenging day. Thank you!

Kevin and his team really did a great job with my move. I’ve moved 5x in the past five years, and Kevin by far did the best job and at an excellent price! I’m planning to hire him again for my family’s next move! They were also very careful with our stuff. Other movers were more expensive and they banged up furniture in previous moves. Kevin was professional and handled our items with care! Thanks

For a lot of people it's really hard inviting strangers into your home, but the friendly folks NCM sent over made moving my appliances...as fun as moving super heavy appliances can be! If I ever needed any work done again, I'd go to them first. They were professional, and very delicate with my things as well.

Paul did a phenomenal job with our move. He and his movers were extremely respectful of our things, did a great job packing, and were very timely with the move. They worked long hours to make sure our move was completed on time. But two things really made these guys stand out from other lovers: 1) they were trust worthy, even around valuables 2) they did not try to tack on additional charges like other companies try to do. I will definitely have Paul and his team do my future moves, in state or out of state.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
