How do I begin to explain what a great experience we had with Junior & Kitchen's Portal as our bartender? From the very beginning, Junior was responsive and thorough in explaining his prices and services. He was so easy to get in touch with for any questions (which were quite a few lol) that I had, and went above and beyond to make sure my fiance and I were happy with all arrangements made. When I asked about a creative signature drink, Junior emailed us 3 different ones to choose from that were unique. We decided on a cocktail that was a twist on a moscow mule with a brown sugar rim that was refreshing and delicious. Junior made sure even during formal pictures my hubby and I had a drink in our hand (which he remembered that my hubby's drink was an old-fashioned). From the moment he arrived at the venue, he went straight to work to make sure everything was set up on time. Not only did he attend to all our guests with respect, friendliness, and courtesy Junior also addressed other vendors to ensure our wedding continued to flow perfectly. My family members & friends all raved about how attentive and professional Junior, his bartenders, and his waitstaff were throughout the whole wedding. I had the pleasure of speaking with all of them towards the end of the evening, and thanking them for helping make my wedding day as special as it was. I would 100% recommend Kitchen's Portal to anyone & would definitely use them again for an event.

We are so glad that we chose Chef Corwin as our wedding caterer!! The food was amazing and we know not only because we tasted it ourselves, but because our guests raved about how good it all was. My husband and I felt comfortable with Corwin from the first time we met him. He is very professional, yet he will make you feel like a very important friend as well. We are extremely satisfied with his services, and we plan to use him for any future events as well. Thank you Chef Corwin!!!

Chef Paola did a wonderful job for our private anniversary dinner. She made an amazing meal and the presentation was beautiful. Best authentic Italian meal! She brought everything she needed and she cleaned everything up when she was done, leaving our home the way it was before she was there. I would HIGHLY recommend Chef Paola and most definitely would use her services again! Thank you Chef!

Chef Tony catered my small wedding of 50 people. This was a destination wedding, we live in Massachusetts and were married in Micco, FL. Chef Tony was amazing with all the planning and help finding other vendors in addition to catering. He helped me plan my perfect menu and suggested a baker for my cake that he worked closely with. All of his staff were amazing and very professional. They even took time to serve the wedding party and photographers appetizers which was fantastic because we were all ravenous. Everything he made was fabulous and I continued to receive rave reviews about the food the entire night and days after the wedding. The menu was cohesive which was an even bigger plus. I think the guest favorites and ours too were the risotto croquets, mini beef wellington, coconut jasmine rice, and the amazing mole braised chicken. But seriously everything was amazing! I hope we will be able to use him again when we visit Florida. The kitchen was also spotless when he left!

Chef Neil and his staff were wonderful. He was able to put together a wonderful meal and stay within our budget as well as cater to special dietary needs for some of the guests at the wedding reception. He even took the time to meet us the day before and give us the linens and silverware beautifully wrapped and tied so that we could get out centerpieces done. I highly recommend his services and would gladly use him for any of our future catering needs.

I'm Alex V. and I wanted to say that Big Al is the best caterer around. He catered my wedding and the food was GREAT! at a very good price. The layout display of food was very nice and professional. We had two kinds of meat and all the trimmings to go with it. The food was kept warm for seconds and plenty of cold drinks with ice provided by Al. After the wedding he cleaned up everything and the place we rented was left clean. I recommend Abundance Catering to everyone. Money well spent.

Not only did they pull together a 30 person event for me and less than 12 hours but the food was amazing and the customer service as well as professionalism was outstanding. I was very worried when my original caterer ended up not being a reliable source at the last minute and I was scrounging for someone to help with this event. Luckily I found one that I can use for many events in the future.

The food was outstanding! All of the guests at our wedding were very pleased and we heard no complaints. The staff was very professional. We were a little disappointed at how quickly they packed up and left. We were also a little disappointed that they didn't leave any food for us to have a plate after everyone was gone as we, the bride and groom, were to busy with our guests to really get a chance to eat. I would definitely recommend Char-Don Catering to anyone and would definitely use them again for any other event!!!

Stephanie did a fantastic job in providing a variety of absolutely delicious hors d'oeuvres for our daughter's wedding rehearsal gathering at our home for almost 60 friends and family members. All of her dishes received rave reviews, but especially the Tuscan Stuffed Shrooms, Siracha Shrimp Skewers, and the Hot Garlic Artichoke Dip! And that's not even mentioning the great desserts! She exceeded all of our expectations with her excellent culinary skills and cordial demeanor. She is a pro! We would hire her again in a heartbeat!

They did a phenomenal job and provided excellent service! We were very pleased with the professionalism they displayed. The actual food at the reception was better than what we were served at our tasting. They worked with us over the several months we spent in planning and were very professional at all times. Very reasonably priced for the quality and excellent service we received. We also rented specialty chairs and the tables from them. They have many other items for rental that made The Purple Platter our effortless one-stop shopping experience. There were some last minute adjustments due to the weather, Farah and her crew worked with us flawlessly through these changes. The event went without a hitch. We highly recommend them for your wedding or any affair for which you need catering. Farah and her team rock! -Lilian and Prentice

We hired Just-In Thyme to cater a plated dinner for our wedding reception. They were very easy to communicate with and plan our event with. They suggested some amazing food combinations. We ended up deciding to go a little safe with our choices to accommodate all our guests tastes. I was pleasantly surprised with how elegant, professional, and upscale our choices turned out. I also feel we got a lot for our money per plate. It included 2 appetizers, salad, meat, vegetable, starch, dessert, and some beverages. We did have some last minute trouble regarding having a stove/oven available at our venue. It caused some stress, but Just-In Thyme came through beautifully and adapted well. Everything turned out wonderfully. And most importantly, the food was delicious!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
    • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
    • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
    • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

    • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
    • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
    • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
    • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
    • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
