He makes learning jazz piano and music theory really easeful, tailors his lessons to what you’re interested in (instead of a rote set of exercises) and managed to always find me exactly what I was interested in doing even if it was esoteric, and was really encouraging and positive. My goal was to get a thorough grounding in music theory and learn how to arrange piano for my own songs, and I was amazed how easily it came with his instruction after years of wandering through pop piano on my own. I am a singer songwriter who learned classical piano when I was younger and I was looking for a short term teacher to up my level in playing and composing. Mark and I spent three months working on different jazz progressions and soloing techniques, as well as analyzing theory so that I can use some of the techniques in my own songwriting. He is very personable and kind, making sure that I understood the concepts for each class, and really broke things down into strategies that are useful for me.
