How can I find a good voice teacher?

Use Thumbtack to find a good, top-rated voice teacher near you. With Thumbtack, you can view the teachers’ profiles, read their client testimonials and check their ratings. To ensure you hire the best instructor, ask them questions about their credentials and success with other students. You should also get cost estimates from at least three instructors before you make your decision.

What is a good age to start vocal lessons?

Whether you’re a novice or experienced singer, it’s never too late to start taking vocal lessons.

If you’re thinking about signing up your child for voice lessons, keep in mind that some instructors recommend waiting until their voice settles after puberty. Talk to voice coaches near you to find out if now's the time for you (or your child) to start taking lessons.

What are singing lessons like?

Every voice coach may have a different style of teaching, but here are a few things you'll likely experience during a singing lesson:

  • Explaining to the instructor what you want to improve on.
  • Going through a few breathing and riff exercises.
  • Receiving constructive feedback and criticism from the instructor.

Before your first voice lesson, you can ask your instructor what you should expect and how to prepare.

Susan really understands the mechanics of voice and has been working with me to increase my octave range and to project my voice with less effort. We've just started working with breath control. I feel like I'm making progress. She has a good sense of humor and I really enjoy our lessons.

Chip is a great instructor. He works on technical exercises that improve your voice while explaining mechanics of voice that are crucial to your understanding of using your voice. He has explained things to me in a way that is completely changing my understanding of how I sing. He has also helped me see the things I do as a singer that hinder my ability to produce great sounds so that I can change them. You will get a lot out of your lessons with Chip.

I have been singing since I was 7 years old, but it wasn't until now that I am 21 years old that I decided to receive lessons. I have already discovered so much about my voice working with Roxy with just a few lessons! I am more excited than ever to be singing, not to mention that she is kind and very encouraging, definitely recommend!

As someone who has never had voice lessons before, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I am extremely lucky to have found Susan as my first voice teacher. Not only is Susan extremely educated when it comes to music, but she is able to teach in a way that fosters passion and the desire to do better. She is patient and always willing to work on whatever your individual needs are. She is kind and has analogies that will make you laugh and keep you positive throughout your lesson, even if you are feeling frustrated. Learning proper singing technique is a process; it won't happen overnight, and it involves a lot of work. If you want the best results, you need to spend your own time going over the exercises. Susan provides the tools to succeed, but if you want to get better, you are the one that has to put in the effort. At only $50 a lesson, working with Susan is an absolute steal given her knowledge and talent. She will push you and show you that you can sing better than you ever thought you could. Additionally, Susan has many examples of singers with proper placement and technique. Streaming these videos help reinforce the ideas explained in the lesson. I would highly recommend Susan to anyone, whether you have musical/vocal experience or not.

Roxy is an awesome voice teacher. I have been so confused about singing for a very long time and Roxy is helping me cut through the clutter and focus on what’s important. She is great at explaining how everything works and telling me how I am doing things wrong. I teach lessons myself so coming from one teacher to another she is very good and super professional. I can tell she loves doing this.

She holds a lot of value in technique and experience in teaching. I have had various coaches and I have never learned from others than I have from Susan. I strongly suggest her if you want to broaden your horizons in proper technique. I have learned a lot from her and you get most out of your lesson when you come in with an open mind, over all patience, and an eagerness to learn no matter what. My singing has changed a lot within the past few months. She has rare, classic knowledge and I recommend her to obtain a gem of your voice. Just put in the work she tells and you'll see the results!
