Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

Lenny and his team made this the smoothest and easiest move my wife and I have ever had. The move was easy to set up, they were on time and I have never seen men being paid by the hour move faster. Nothing was damaged and they did a final walk through to see if they had missed anything and offered to move anything else. They were extremely polite and personable. We highly recommend them. If we ever have the need to move anything in the future they will be the people we call.

Kevin was on time, very professional and efficient. I added a last minute request and he was able to accommodate that without any issues. Very satisfied with my move and Kevin made it much less stressful. I would absolutely use IRC MOVERS again.

I had to find someone to move me on very short notice. Greg was more than accommodating. His team showed up on time and worked efficiently even though it was pouring down rain. They took the time to wrap my furniture in pads and shrink wrap, and were very careful maneuvering around the staircase. I recommend giving them a call for your moving needs, I will definitely be calling again for my next move.

The owner of the company, Chaz, made himself easily accessible and was friendly and responsive from start to finish. My move was rather difficult in the sense that it was a lot harder than I imagine the movers expected it to be - all the furniture was exceptionally heavy, bulky, and delicate and it took a looooong time to disassemble and reassemble (4+ hours for only about 10 pieces of furniture and 10 boxes). That said, Chaz honored the original quote and the movers took a lot of care with each item (everything was thoroughly wrapped and padded). I didn't find any damage to the furniture or the pickup/dropoff houses. Can't ask for more than that - we're really happy.

They were on time and very efficient. I had gotten two other quotes that seemed quite expensive to me considering I was moving from a partially furnished condo and had very little furniture and no major appliances to move. With Lenny VanGo I ended up paying almost $900 less than the first quote I received. Lenny is a stand-up guy.

Matt called me back right away and was on the spot - giving me a fair rate and an excellent time frame. He got the job done quickly and did take care to make sure that everything in the move was done right - his gear isn't really set up for 'moving' - so you do need to be flexible and anticipate the open air trailer but this worked wonderfully for us.

I had a very small move of 7 to 8 furniture items going from one side of town to the other. Can you believe they packed everything in a small van? - Mini van sized. Everything was fine upon delivery. Great packing guys, and wonderful service!

I think perhaps "bad reviews" are not featured on the Thumbtack review page, so I am a bit frustrated that this review may not see the light of day. Let me be clear up front: I AM NOT CRITICIZING THE TWO MEN LENNY BROUGHT WITH HIM FOR THE MOVE. They are hardworking, diligent, persistent, and one of the two was quite physically strong. They worked hard to get the job done--a VERY difficult and demanding physical job--so I can IN NO WAY CRITICIZE THEM. They did VERY WELL under the circumstances. I want to make that clear at the outset. Lenny's crew are the only reason for Lenny receiving two stars instead of one. They earned five stars, and Lenny earned negative four. I hired Lenny to move 4 pieces of furniture: a very large and heavy sofa (this was explained at the outset, very clearly, by me), a chair, a coffee table, and a console table. On the phone, I was told the following: (1) Lenny would bring a 3 man crew. (2) Lenny would arrive at 8 a.m. (3) Lenny would wrap the furniture in plastic and provide moving blankets. (4) Lenny would do a good job. Not a single one of these things came to pass. Lenny himself is physically incapable of moving anything, and yet is one of the three man 'moving crew'. A 5 year old could be as helpful in the moving process as Lenny is. Lenny showed up 2 hours late, without an explanation. Gratuitous for what was scheduled to be the first job of the day. We were having furniture shipped from a friend's home to ours, so we eventually just left instead of waiting for Lenny as we were busy with other moving tasks that day in advance of a hurricane. We figured we would just meet the movers at the drop off. Lenny did not instruct his men--again, not a criticism of his men, that is a decision that management must make--to wrap the furniture. The furniture wound up incredibly scuffed. One piece, a sofa, would have been scuffed regardless. The rest, however, shouldn't have been scuffed, and was. Lenny put one single moving blanket--one of TWO he brought--on a banister. We wound up taking it off. Now, one piece, a VERY large sofa, it may have been literally impossible to get away without scuffing it. The doorway through which it had to fit was about 1/8" wider than the sofa itself, and Lenny's two men accomplished an utterly Herculean task by getting it through. Again, to be clear, Lenny's guys are great. Had we followed Lenny's wisdom--go ahead and leave the sofa feet on and try it and see what happens--it wouldn't have made it through. Lenny eyeballed it and seemed pretty sure. Actually, he used a length of strap to measure, as he had no measuring tape. His estimate was way off and had we left the feet on, it would have been hopeless. At one point prior to forcing the sofa through the front door, just so we're clear, Lenny suggested that we hoist the sofa up to the second floor balcony from the ground floor, piano style. There was literally no equipment in the truck to accomplish this, no way in hell it would have worked given the crew, and it was astonishing to me, truly, that it was even suggested. The level of delusion required to entertain such an idea is unthinkable. Did I mention that I helped significantly in getting the sofa through? I, the one who hired the "three man crew?" Again, to stress, this is NOT the fault of Lenny's employees. They were simply preposterously understaffed. On no planet was that a three man crew. Lenny was useless throughout. Before reattaching the legs to the sofa, he said, "We're at two hours. We can leave now, or..." The implication being that if I wanted him to reattach the feet to the sofa I helped his guys move, I would have to pay him for a third hour. I declined and decided to reattach the feet myself, tipped his guys, paid Lenny exactly what he was owed and not a penny more, and they left. I want to emphasize that Lenny's guys did everything they could, despite literally laughable management and no equipment. They are not the ones to blame. A mind-bending experience, one I will never repeat. Please, if this is published, let it be a cautionary tale. I have no idea how Lenny has nearly a 5 star rating on Thumbtack, except that people must not know to expect better.

Lenny and his team did an excellent job. They were on time, prepared even beyond things I would have thought of! They worked quickly- considering I was paying by the hour they still worked very quick and did not waste time I was paying for! I very much appreciated that. They loaded my moving truck securely and even did a safety check on my lights and everything so I could drive with piece of mind. Thank you Lenny and your team!
