Chris was very professional. I told him the scope of my project and he was able to complete it with no problems. I just needed one new electrical outlet placed in my kitchen and the work that he did was very clean and professional. If I need anything else electrical I would not hesitate to give him a call.

I hired HAF Granite to do the countertops in my kitchen. The kitchen countertop base was not a regular shape and I needed two different pieces. The requirements were complex and needed a very precise measurement. These guys did a great job of measuring accurately and were ready to deliver before time. Also, they were extremely competitive on the price point. I would say i got a great deal. I would highly recommend them.

Handy JB did an excellent job in repairing all our lighting fixtures in our kitchen. When I explained our problem,he diagnosed and purchased the parts before he arrived. Within 24 hours our lighting problem was solved for a very reasonable price and only paid cost for the parts. Already have lined upJimmy for future jobs. Very capable,on time and did a great job. Oh yes he's a nice and polite individual as well.

Awsome work, really! I'm an electrical contactor in NYC and I can truly say that Carlo and his partner are true craftsmen. They are a turn key company, from demo to cleanup. I met them though a friend who had their condos renovated, that was helpful. Their carpentry, tile work, painting is flawless. They finished my kitchen snd laundry room. Now that I have found such good people I will be using them for my next phases, the bathrooms. Good luck with your project everyone Sencierly Tony

Garrett did an exceptional job attaching the plumbing for my new kitchen sink. He did have to re-arrange much of the piping and change the configuration from double drain to single. Some time later, I called him back to the house for a different project to re-build one of my toilets. He did a great job with that project too! I'd recommend him to anyone in the Palm Beach area.

Mike was hired to help us with our kitchen remodeling project. He provided a clear estimate, always on time and left the workspace spotless each day. He is a true professional, his craftsmanship is excellent, and his pricing very fair. He willingly accepted additions to the project, provided valuable guidance and helped keep us on budget. Mikes work to install cabinets. crown molding, roll outs and other refinements was terrific. We highly recommend Mike to anyone needing a highly skilled professional to help them make their kitchen project a success. Thanks Mike! BG Boynton Beach, Fl.

If you are looking for a residential/commercial contractor to provide quality remodeling services in the South Florida area, then you should consider calling Mr. Luis Briceno of the Done-Rite Handyman Service Company in Boca Raton, Florida. Luis is an extremely hard working and efficient professional that you can count on to provide high-quality and reliable services at a fair and reasonable price. I recently had him renovate my home by replacing the entire floor throughout the home with porcelain tile and installing brand new kitchen cabinets that included a complete re-design of the kitchen layout. He also rebuilt the bathroom by removing the old bathtub and antiquated wall tiles and replacing them with a custom built shower with sliding glass doors and brand new tiling from floor to ceiling. Luis and his team work independently throughout the home performing all electrical, plumbing, carpentry, drywall, stucco and painting work to eliminate the need for having to deal with more than one company to complete a project. He is extremely knowledgeable and very accommodating in all aspects of operations. I highly recommend contacting him if you are interested in remodeling your home or office.

MVM is a licensed contractor.but they aren't the ones doing the work. It's a front for them to allow another company, Olaf Commercial Service to use their licensed status in order to portray themselves as licensed. The person who responded to my quote request through Thumbtack was Miquel. He portrayed we was a rep of MVM and presented a contract from MVM. However, The first time I had to make a payment Miguel asked that I make the check payable to his drywall company, Olaf commercial. We agreed on a price for my entire project which included gutting and reframing a bathroom and gutting a kitchen and installing cabinets. He asked for a $1200 down payment upon signing the contract with MVM. After he finished removing popcorn ceiling, he asked for more money. He kept pressuring me for more money. To date, I have paid him $6000.00 and all he has done is removed the popcorn in my living room and replaced a 72x80 area of a wall with wood pieces I had. The last straw came this week when he asked for more money when I gave him an additional $1500 on the day he had been last to me house. On this day, all he did was move furniture and install a ceiling fan. For having received $6000 in advance of doing the most major work (which has yet to be done), it felt like I was being given the shake down. These people are a fraud. They want money and more money without having done the work. I have so much renovation going on at my house that I did not have the energy to fight Miguel over money. He took advantage. He had not finished removing the popcorn in my ceiling and hallway when I left tuesday of this week. Today I hired another contractor who finished the ceiling work in the common areas for $600. I only wish I had found them first before I relied on Thumbtack to refer a reputable company. DO NOT HIRE THESE PEOPLE.

I hired Gemco USA because someone else recommended Bill and because of their reviews. They just finished a project remodeling my master bathroom and upgrading my kitchen. Like everything about construction, the process is overwhelming, but Bill did a great job. The workers are good, specially Rogelio, courteous, and respectful. Bill has a master in construction management, and he can guide you on your home renovations. I recommend Gemco USA for your home projects. October 13/2015

We hired them to do a full kitchen remodel and new floors in the entire condo. We hit a few road blocks because of our old south Florida condo. The sub contractors in Florida aren't great either, but these guys made sure the work was done right. The finished product was more than I could of imagined. Thank you guys.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
