Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I hire the best landscaper in Atlanta?

You can hire the best landscaper in Atlanta by searching for one online. Start by comparing ratings and customer reviews among local pros. If you find a customer review with photos of the pro’s work, check them out to see what types of landscaping the pro excels in.

Also, make sure the landscaper or landscape architect you hire is properly licensed in Georgia. You might find this information on the pros’ profile, or you can try searching for it online

After you’ve narrowed down your search for a landscaper to a few Atlanta professionals, reach out to all of the candidates. Give them information about your landscaping project. For example, are you planting native plants and trees, like Southern magnolias or Georgia asters? Do you want to build a stone patio or walkway? Do you want to install an outdoor fireplace, misters or a water fountain? By giving the landscapers as much information about your project as possible, they can give you an accurate cost estimate.

How much does landscaping cost?

The price of landscaping varies widely due to the range of choices that can be made, but you can expect to pay anywhere from $320 and $20,000 for your landscaping work. The national average cost for a landscaping project is $2,600.

Factors like the choice of plants, the amount and type of hardscaping, the square footage of your landscaped area, and the region you live in will have a significant effect on your landscaping cost.

Is hiring a landscaper worth it?

A landscaper is worth it if you don't want to invest a significant amount of time and effort into planting, trimming, raking, weeding and performing other operations on your garden or yard. Hiring a landscaper to perform regular maintenance in your yards and complete bigger projects is valuable if you’re looking to sell your house. A professional landscaper can make your house more appealing to potential buyers.

Some landscapers may perform maintenance duties — remove leaves, mow lawns, trim trees and shrubs, etc. —  but they can also help you bring bigger projects to life. This may include adding a misting system, an outdoor fireplace, water features, artificial turf, a patio and much more.

Start contacting landscapers near you to get free estimates and start planning your project today.

How much does landscaping cost per square foot?

The cost of landscaping can vary widely based on the type of plants you wish to have, the amount of grading required, the condition of the land before work begins, and other factors. Adding in designer or high-end landscaping, as well as hardscaping such as sidewalks, walls, or patios will add to the cost. To find out how much your landscaping will cost, contact landscapers near you.

What is landscape design?

Landscaping design refers to the art of analyzing an existing landscape, planning how to transform it through flora and fauna design and working with a client to ensure goals are met. Landscape designers may completely transform an outdoor space or make minor modifications to enhance it. They may also call for grading and the construction of hardscaping surfaces like walkways or patios to add to the enjoyment of the space.

Where can you buy landscaping rocks?

You can shop for landscaping rocks from a variety of different sources. The first option is large chain retail stores specializing in home improvement and gardening. Often, landscaping rocks like slate and other slabs arrive on pallets and are sold in bulk, giving you a great deal. Your local landscaping store also carries rocks, and you may even have a stone or quarry seller nearby who can sell you the rocks you need. When in doubt, contact landscaping companies near you to see if they have rocks you can purchase.

What is landscaping?

Landscaping is the intentional placement and maintenance of living plants on an area of land or in your yard. This can include trees, lawn, flowers, bushes and other plant life and often incorporates mulch and other organic matter. The primary purpose of landscaping is to provide beauty to the house or building it surrounds.

Many landscaping companies also offer design, architecture and construction services. For example, they can help you design a yard that incorporates a patio, deck, pool, fire pit, lighting, walkways, retaining walls and more.

How much does landscaping improve home value?

Landscaping your property can boost the value of your home between 5% and 15%, according to Better Homes & Gardens. They specify that this is the amount of value added when you upgrade the condition of your landscaping from poor to good, though these terms are subjective.

How can I find out if a landscaper or lawn care professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To consult national guidelines on essential COVID-19 service providers and see whether a lawn care professional qualifies, visit a page on CISA’s website called Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This website contains 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors that you can search through. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure so you should also check your city or state’s government website.

Can I use digital payments to pay for outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing, tree trimming and other similar services?

Many outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing and tree trimming companies will likely accept some form of digital payment instead of cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely causing more businesses to adopt digital platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash and Google Pay.

Search professionals’ online profiles to see if they list digital payment services, and ask them about their payment policies during a consultation call.

I had a great experience overall with Lucio and his company. As someone that’s not very knowledgeable about landscaping, he took the time to really explain every aspect of my front and backyard lawn issues. I didn’t take great care of my front yard so he was able to reinvigorate my curb appeal and get our landscaping back on track. Highly recommend and plan to use him again in the future for all my landscaping needs.

Lucio worked on upgrading our backyard from mulch to grass, plants and rocks and did an outstanding job. He recommended the right grass given it's a shaded area, cleaned the yard and designed the landscaping. Pictures speak for themselves. Would definitely recommend him and work with him again for future lawn and landscaping projects. He's professional, timely, fast and cost efficient.

Elmer was super responsive and even came out on a Sunday for the project assessment to accommodate our crazy schedule. He performed an underground drainage installation/repair in our backyard and upon an inspection in the rain today, is working perfectly! Thanks Elmer and team for your great service; we will be calling you for our next landscaping project.

Nelson was a professional and punctual throughout the entire process and provided quality design and final work. He completely reimagined our backyard from dirt to the photos you see below, with dimensions and distinct areas with different purposes. It took 2-3 days to get a full quote/landscape design and 5 days to complete the project. His team was meticulous and hard working the entire time and Nelson was hands on everyday to make sure the design and quality lived up to the specifications. What they did: Porcelain pavers with turf, turf play area, pathway and tree wiring/lighting, retaining wall, plants, firepit/sitting area, excavating, leveling and drainage. I can't stress enough how much better this experience was then most contractors I have worked with, from the detail of the quote/design to the final product. I highly recommend Nelson and his team for all the reasons above. It is worth it.

I really needed my front yard cleaned up and desperately needed some landscaping. Alex and his team did what I requested. Very pleased with the results. Update: Alex did a good job on my front yard in February, we had an agreement that he would return and finish my backyard in mid March; add garden beds, re-do a current garden bed, and add mulch and border around a tree. I did mention installing a fire pit, but I didn't understand it was going to add $2200 extra to my project, I had no choice but scrap it. I still wanted the other work done. We made several appointments but it kept getting delaying (weather was a factor). Finally, Alex said he would come out on March 24th, but then changed it to March 25th. He never showed up. I texted, no response. I have received no further communication. Good work but bad communication on appointments and pricing.

This was my first ever big project, which was scheduled to take four weeks, but due to weather, it ran over by an extra two weeks. The scope of work included removal of an existing concrete patio, storage shed, swing set, and fence. Because I had major drainage issues, my entire backyard was regraded, French drains were installed. The following was also installed: a large concrete slab; River Rock and stepping stones; retaining wall; mulch, vinyl fence, outdoor lighting and finally, artificial tuft for low maintenance. Most days Jesse and his crew worked 11 hours, six days a week, rain, or sunshine. I was always kept updated on the status of the project and surprisingly there were minimal delays except when weather made it impossible to work. When the project became overwhelming for me, Jesse made it more tolerable. He’s very meticulous and takes pride in doing a great job. Based on the before and after pictures will give you a visual of the awesome work that was done. If you are looking for an architectural landscaper, I highly recommend Oostanaula Outdoors, they will not disappoint you. The scope of work was extensive, with the final product exceeding my expectations.

STAY AWAY!!! DO NOT HIRE THIS CONTRACTOR! He is highly unprofessional with so many excuses. I hired this contractor to put in a french system and sod and it was one of the worst decision I have ever made. From the beginning of this project, Kevin did not take the time to carefully evaluate what was going to be done. He proceed to tear up my yard only to find out that the ground was too soft. A true professional would have noticed this from the beginning. Instead I have a backyard that looks like a total mud pit with a random ditch that connects to nothing (see picture). Also, on the first day, Kevin cut my fiber line to my house. This cost me an extra $200 to get fixed and he did not even offer to handle the situation. He took no accountability for this which was something he did a lot when it came to this project. The next day he was scheduled to come out and he didn't. He said he was having car problem which at the time I understood but now I dont even know if I believed him. Over the next 3 days it rained but didnt heat any kind of update from Kevin. After the rain, we had 4 straights days of perfect weather. As a client, I would expect for the contractor to come out and take advantage of the good day. Not this company....they came out ONE Day...only ONE Day and did about a few hours of work....that's all. PATHETIC!! And then we he came out, he did not follow the sketch we agreed on for the landscape....he decided to make his own adjustments without communicating. His favorite line was "Sure thing, we will be there first thing in the morning" However the truth is he would either not show up and not communicate the no show or show up at the end of the day around 3 PM or 4 PM. Kevin is the worst when it comes to communication. As a client, I expect to be updated when I am the paying custome. Not the case with this guy. I have to call him and check on him...basically micro manage him and I am way too busy for that. So basically enter at your own risk cause now I have to pay even more money to now fix the mess he made
