Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

We are remodeling our bathroom and needed a medicine cabinet, we had called around to a few other places and they were either very expensive or not interested in our little project. Then I found The Cabinet Elves. So I contacted them and Jerry came out on time and got our measurements. We got our cabinet before it was promised and matched our vanity perfect. Very professional company. We would highly recommend The Cabinet Elves to anyone.

Alin refinished our kitchen cabinets, added crown molding to the cabinets, created a shelf above our oven, a valence above our sink, replaced the drawer pulls and hinges, and installed coordinated paneling which wrapped around the breakfast bar in the kitchen. He did a beautiful job on all of the wood work, was on-time and completed the project on time and on budget. He maintained a clean work environment when he was working in our house and always cleaned up before he left for the day. My husband and I are very happy with the finished product and have received numerous compliments. I would highly recommend him and will use him again on future projects.

We had custom cabinets - a wardrobe and drawers - built in our Master Bedroom. Atlanta Bookshelves did a wonderful job creating custom pieces to fit the often unlevel spaces in our 86 year old home. We are very pleased with the results and will enjoy them for years to come.

Received a prompt, reasonable quote and conceptual rendering for my small cabinet (home office and AV insert) project. Work was started on time and there were only minor delays in completion. Quality of job was good, and worth the price. My requested touch ups were taken care of just fine. I'm happy with the result and will give Tim and Ginger Ford other opportunities in the future.

Home Swwet Home did the cabinet work for our kitchen remodel. I can’t recommend these guys enough. We have been working with a lot of contractors these days and Home Sweet Home was definitely the best of them all, night and day versus our experiences with others They are professional, show up on time, keep a clean workspace and most important of all, do beautiful work. My wife and I would highly recommend them.

We hired Tim and his team to design a custom built-in unit in our bedroom for storage including open shelving, cabinets, drawers, and a space for a TV. Overall, Tim and his team did a wonderful job. Their work is excellent and we've been enjoying the finished product immensely. They worked with us throughout the project and were very flexible as we made small changes during the process. Unfortunately, they did have a few internal hangups that caused some delays and a few scheduling hiccups. The doors and drawers needed to be resprayed more than once; there were delays due to other jobs that required me to rearrange my day around the team; communication was not always clear. However, the quality of the product was always prioritized and held in the highest regard, which ultimately made the hiccups worthwhile and left me happy and satisfied once the project was finished. Tim and his team are real craftsmen and take pride in their work.
