Carlos was great to work with. I hired him to handle my lighting on a reno project and he was quick and efficient to install new lighting throughout the house and added can lights in the kitchen. He later came to my rescue when a previous contractor didn’t work out and was quick to pick up the add’l work installing new flooring, a ceiling repair, painting and fixing a tile backsplash in the kitchen. Thanks to him, I was finally able to sell my property and everyone complemented the finishes especially, thanks to Carlos!!

Gabrini was very nice, friendly, and as soon as I called him for my kitchen backsplash job, he arrived that same day to install my tile. I plan to hire him again, to install floor tile in my utility room later this year.

Charity was the least expensive of six quotes I received and it was very easy to negotiate my contract with Bobby as he was understanding and knowledgeable. Ultimately, we added several features at my request. Most important to me, Bobby agreed to allow me some sweat equity for credit to fit my budget. We arranged an agreeable time two weeks out, but Charity was able to reschedule at my convenience for an earlier time. I hired Charity to do three jobs: refinish my hard wood floors, install new carpet and install hardwood floor in a walk-in closet. Refinishing the hardwood floors in my kitchen, dining and living room, required three days due to the drying time for multiple coats of stain. Bobby and his crew worked diligently to complete work in the shortest time possible. Throughout the process, Bobby was very responsive to my phone calls and texts, as well as being very pleasant to work with. My floors turned out exactly as I wanted them. The carpet was installed in three bedrooms and a hallway a couple days later. The carpet was of better quality than the one I had initially selected, at no additional charge, and looks beautiful. My walk-in closet floor was installed the day after the carpet. I call it my small dance floor. Bobby Steele and Charity are definitely go-to people should you ever need flooring services in the future. They are attentive, courteous and professional. They are a home run in value.

Flooring Zone was great to work with. Quote for a wood floor installation was affordable and the job was done in a timely manner. We had one small hiccup when the installation team accidentally broke a valve behind my gas range. Chris and team called around to find someone to fix it and paid for it. Repair was done the next day. I would hire them again and recommend to others.

Mr Treadwell and his team removed a load bearing wall between my kitchen and family room. During the initial visit he answered all of my questions. I picked his company because he seemed very knowledgeable and his price was fair. I could tell from the moment they arrived they were professionals. They immediately prepped the area to protect wood floors, carpets, furniture and appliances. They took their time surveying the 2 floors, basement and the attic. Special care went into making sure all walls, floors and ceilings were well supported. In the end, they did all of the work in less than one work day. Everything went just as they planned it. I now have the most unique layout in the neighborhood. One more thing, while Michael was in the attic he noticed I had a broken truss. He fixed that for free.

Carmelo was extremely professional and responsive. He met me for an initial consultation and guided me through picking wood flooring for my home. He (not someone else) laid the flooring with the assistance of his wife, and he completed the job within the estimated time frame. We had a small issue with the flooring several weeks later, and he agreed to fix it with no problem. I'm pleased to recommend him to other Thumbtack users.

The folks at Wilson Flooring are affordable, very skilled and accommodating. They recarpeted my mom's house for a third less than what I paid to recarpet my smaller house six months earlier and did just as good a job. So when it came time to change my kitchen floor i called them first. The price was great. They were patient with me changing my mind a couple of times and they did a fantastic job. Selvin clearly knows what he is doing and Jinny was responsive and a joy to work with.

Punctual and responsive. He and his helper did an astounding job installing LVP in my basement room. His quoted price is great and he takes the time to make recommendations on materials needed. I already made the decision to hire him to do my upstairs laminated wood flooring. If you’re looking to hire someone to do your flooring project, hire Neal as he’s reasonable, professional, and takes the time to do things right.

Pro Flooring 323 LLC has completed flooring projects for two of my homes. I appreciated the owner's patience, because it took me a very long time to decide on the exact flooring color. The owner was easy to speak with and provided great suggestions. I also chose this company because the prices were reasonable compared to the big stores and the quality and installers were very nice and accommodating.

WS Flooring did a good job on our flooring work in our house. This included installation of new hardwoods (in formerly carpeted rooms), stripping and refinishing existing hardwoods (to match the new ones) and installation of new carpet in remainder of the house. WS worked with us to provide the specific carpet product we wanted (which we'd been shown by another flooring contractor). WS was responsive, honest and flexible with what we wanted and worked around our scheduling. Pricing was good value. We had received 3 separate quotes for identical work. WS ensured we were happy and fully satisfied prior to accepting payment. I would not hesitate to hire WS again for another flooring job.

I had a great experience! I hired another contractor to help with my floors and they cancelled at the last moment. I tried Thumbtack and this pro responded right away. When we spoke i explained what was needed and explained the urgency to have the work completed the next day. We made arrangements and he advised he would arrive to my home between 8am-9am. Wow! This gentleman called at 7:45am to let me know he would arrive in 15 minutes. I was very impressed. We completed a walk through and he noticed I didn't have all the materials and several wrong items as well. I resolved the missing items and he completed my floors. Very quickly! The project was a success!! I Highly recommend using this pro because I will use him in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
