Carlos was great to work with. I hired him to handle my lighting on a reno project and he was quick and efficient to install new lighting throughout the house and added can lights in the kitchen. He later came to my rescue when a previous contractor didn’t work out and was quick to pick up the add’l work installing new flooring, a ceiling repair, painting and fixing a tile backsplash in the kitchen. Thanks to him, I was finally able to sell my property and everyone complemented the finishes especially, thanks to Carlos!!

Gabrini from Casa Nova did a fantastic job. We just wanted someone to handle our backsplash and we didn't have to worry much about it. For this project, we just needed to provide the tile and absolutely nothing else. Gabrini gave us advice when we asked, and the result is better than we could have expected. He was truly a professional, protection all our countertops and floors while he worked and cleaning everything up perfectly before he left. On top of everything, his price was one of the lowest quoted to us and he was well worth it. If I ever need more tiling work again I'll definitely be calling Casa Nova.

I hired Felipe to complete some drywall, paint, and railing repairs in our basement after we had a small foundation leak and the remediation company company removed the bottom 2 feet of drywall in 3 rooms. I also decided to have him paint our bedroom, prep and paint over 15 year old wallpaper in our dining room, and paint the other rooms in the basement. All I can say is that he did an awesome job. Showed every day at 7am and basically worked to 6pm. Prepped the work areas to make sure the areas stayed clean (floors, furniture, etc) and made sure I was happy with each repair before moving onto the next one. Would absolutely recommend him to anyone needing drywall and paint work done.

Charity Floors is an honest company and they do match quotes from other bidders. For that reason that are at least worth the call. They installed hardwood floors on both levels of our home and the staircase. Our house looks beautiful. Our project was extremely detailed and they did a good job. Make sure that you are clear on what you want/expect and I would recommend having Bobby (owner) there on Day 1 and on the final day of the project. Sometimes crews can be so focused on finishing that they can miss some details. I would recommend/rehire Charity Floors/Bobby.

We used Flooring zone for finished-on-site hardwood floors and carpet. The pricing was competitive and work was started on time. Everybody was professional. That the project was 2 days late getting finished was not too surprising for the size of the project but was the only disappointment. the End result is outstanding. I would use them again

Jairo came to give me a free estimate and was able to do the job the same day. He fixed my floors and it looks beautiful. He also did some other work to my front door. Would recommend. Price was reasonable for the jobs that he completed.

I originally contacted Thomas to install new hardwood floors for me, but then found out that he did custom work as well and had him look at 2 doors that were over 100 yrs old and asked if he could transform them into sliding barn doors for me. He said he had never made barn doors but he felt he could. I gave him my vision of how I wanted my barn doors to look, my new room colors and the flooring. As he processed the doors, he would send me photos. I have to say not only is my floor beautiful, but the barns doors steal the show. Thomas has an amazing gift. I have referred him to all of my friends, neighbors and I will definitely use him again. A very happy customer

I cannot say enough about what a fantastic job Ali does. My floors have never been so clean. I have my house and office cleaned. She goes over and beyond your “normal “ cleaning. She organizes our office and restocks the refrigerator which is a big help. I have recommended her to my family and friends.

Moe came out on Saturday to give an estimate and had an installer there on Monday morning at 8:30am. All was complete same day by 4pm. I even received a call mid-day to ask how the installers were doing. Installers did an EXCELLENT job. Would highly recommend and would use again. The only downfall is that I do wish they offered financing for some additional hardwood work I'd like to get done. Otherwise, this was a good referral and I'm glad I used Thumbtack. This was my first time using Thumbtack and I plan to use again.

Very easy to communicate and work with during the consultation. They brought carpet samples based on pictures I'd sent to them. Very good pricing. I was able to schedule carpet removal of old carpeting, and installation for 4 bedrooms, hallway and closet just a few days after consultation which was great. Contractors arrived on-time and immediately began work. They worked very hard and efficiently. They even went above and beyond to fix creeking floor boards. It only took a few hours of a day for removal and install services which was great. They were even sure to clean up debris. I love the work they did! Highly recommended.

I have used many contractors throughout my life, but have never used one as good as Alex. He went above and beyond throughout the process of doing the work. The quality was great on the hardwood, tile and carpet install. The customer service was unbelievable. He response time was exceptionally fast anytime we had questions. What was really impressive was the fact that after a week of the install I noticed his subcontractor missed a few grout lines along the wall in the bathroom. I texted Alex about that and within 15 minutes he came over to my house at 7pm on a weekday and did the work himself.

Outstanding! We reviewed a number of flooring companies and decided on EcoFlooring USA last month. From start to finish, we could not be more pleased with our decision. Glauco Rocha is a pleasure to work with – responsive; offered a fair, competitive price (even more so after observing the quality of work); consistently prompt and kept to the proposed schedule. He and the man working with him took great pride in their work and it showed with exceptional workmanship and finished product. Clean up was excellent. We had 2 issues to address beyond a standard installation: 1) Water damage by front door which was worse than realized. They could have simply replaced the subflooring in that area which we had requested to do upfront and never said another word; instead, they showed us the damage and took the time to remedy the area, e.g., replacing damaged insulation, reinforcing area with additional supports. 2) Replace cheap, original (and damaged – I’ll spare details but it involves cat urine) subflooring of another room that appeared to crumble in some areas when pulled up. We were so pleased and inspired with their work that we rehired them to install hardwood floors in other rooms, which will occur later this month. We highly recommend EcoFlooring USA!

My wife and I recently used Creative Creations to install hardwood flooring in our formal dining room and main floor hallway. The craftsmanship and attention to detail was excellent. The arrival time to our home was prompt and the work was completed in the time specified in our work order. The workmen were courteous and efficient. Their rates are very reasonable. I would highly recommend this company to anyone needing home improvements. CH Atlanta Georgia

I called Reliable Restorations & Remodeling when we had water damage at my condo. The damage was pretty bad so we had to replace the carpet, fix the ceiling and dry walls in the living room and kitchen. We also had to paint the living room and kitchen as well. I replaced carpet with hardwood floor in the living room as part of the restoration and it looks awesome. Teyon and his team did an excellent job. They were very professional. Teyon is professional yet friendly, informative, and a very helpful resource. He is also very good in prompt and timely communication. He walked me through to the whole process and made recommendations on what would go best with each fix. He gave me the timelines and the scope of work for the project and he met it. He manged to keep me updated on daily basis. Teyon is very client oriented. He worked with my insurance company every step of the way, and made sure we did not accrue any additional expense besides the deductible.I need to to mention his help to me with the insurance to get my bedroom carpets replacement also included in the estimate. Initially I was dealing with another company (one of the top most) for about a month and they lacked the communication/expertise to deal with my insurance and represent on my behalf. The moment Teyon took over the restoration job, he dealt with them in a very professional manner with acceptable reports and my insurance approved the bedrooms carpet replacement with no further questions. Reliable Restorations has also offered warranty on the service and they would come back and fix it with no questions asked. In the end, they did a wonderful job on the repairs. Everything turned out great. I highly recommend Reliable Restoration for restoration and remodeling tasks.

Jenny and Eric are amazing to work with. So professional, yet personal. Our East Cobb home needed some serious upgrades, and our 2nd floor now has hardwoods - so pretty and maintenance free! So easy to choose when all the samples come to you - makes decision making a cinch! I recommend Floor Coverings International to anyone!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
