My rating is "VERY GOOD". Does this fall between good & outstanding? Old tub, toilet, vinyl surround, & ceramic tile surround were pulled out of my very small bathroom. They installed new plumbing, backerboard & the an air jet tub. Not realizing that they are more difficult, I chose small tiles. Gary did a great job installing the tile. Job was held up while we found condo bldg. water shut off. Some unexpected problems occurred, which is expected in any remodel job. I will rate some parts of this job as "good," as some faucet parts were lost & faucet had to go out & pick out & buy a new faucet. As far as what could have been done better - closer supervision of a worker with some personal problems, but the overall RESPONSE to the problems was EXCELLENT. Mr. Wilkins stayed in touch throughout the job. Gary worked very late to get all the tile in, grouted, & cleaned. The whole job took one week. I am very happy with the results.

Gabriel, Cris and their crew were great to work with. They are eminently competent, professional and courteous. We had a big bathroom renovation project, and they helped us work through unexpected issues as they arose and solve problems we would have had no idea how to fix. We are extremely pleased with how the bathrooms turned out - even better than the vision we had in mind.

I have known Kelly for 9 years and have seen over a dozen properties she has designed. She has an amazing eye for color, texture and flow. She gets to know her clients and works to fit their style and helps them think outside of their comfort zone to find some truly unique items. She is one of the most talented designers I have worked with in the southeast.

We were very happy to work with Sara, owner of Heritage Interiors. She truly came to the rescue with some great ideas and recommendations on our kitchen expansion/remodel. In the midst of our remodel, my husband and I decided we needed some professional guidance. Sara was super responsive, the same day I contacted her she came to review our space. She listened, took measurements, provided ideas and valuable insights and truly consulted with us. When asked to turn around paint and color scheme recommendations she did so within hours. She knew we had a deadline to meet given the construction schedule and she came to the rescue with some great color suggestions. We are now back on track and know that our dream kitchen will soon be a reality. We also know we will continue to collaborate with Sara on completing our overall kitchen/entartaining space. Her advice has truly been invaluable.

During a complete remodel of our home, the builder's design for our guest bedrooms and baths didn't thrill me, so I turned to Sarah Mouser of Ivory Lane Interiors to draw up some alternative plans. I was thrilled with her design. Her precision and attention to detail were exactly what I wanted. And her design made perfect sense. I also needed help picking out tile for the bathrooms and kitchen and Sarah was an invaluable resource. She has an excellent eye and a wonderful personality which makes working with her a most pleasant experience. She definitely helped to lower the whole stress level of remodeling. I would highly recommend Ivory Lane Interiors for your next decorating, remodel or updating project.

I am always happy to refer Kevyn Connelly!! I love having her in my home. She is a very talented artist!! She painted my foyer bath with a faux finish and a beautiful bird motif that she did freehand. She's done my entire dining room, and basement bathroom walls. She's refinished furniture and accessories for me including a french mirror. I currently have a list of projects that I am scheduling her to come back and do. She is always very timely. She left my home like she was never there—just more beautiful! I love her! She's become a friend. I can leave her alone in my home with no worries! She made sure I was completely satisfied before payment. You can’t go wrong with hiring Kevyn!

Our project was to inject living plants and artwork into a new business office. Ms. Carter provided suggestions and recommendations in key visible areas like the lobby, bathrooms and CEO's office. We opted for live plants in most areas with good quality silk plants in areas without light like bathrooms. The artwork frames were large and exactly alike and are soon to be filled with industry related graphics. In addition Ms. Carter shopped for, bought and delivered the plants and stands. Ms. Carter was well organized, creative, dependable, and persistently followed-up on each detail of the project.

Maurice replaced the leaking pipe we had in our bathroom, repaired the sheetrock and patched the popcorn ceiling for a surprisingly low price. There's nothing he can't do! He did a great job and we would definitely hire him again. Thumbtack should fix their distance matching because he lived on the other side of Atlanta and he still made the drive several times to complete the job. Very happy!

I purchased furniture for my bedroom, but I never got around to decorating the room. When I met Lisa, I was very excited to work with her. Lisa stopped by my home, reviewed the room and provided some extremely useful suggestions, based on my likes and dislikes. She also took photos and measurements. It was a great consultation and I look forward to working with Lisa to finish the room.

We've worked with Debbie multiple times around space planning and furniture layout and design. She is fabulous at what she does. She spends a good amount of time understanding what you are looking for in your space and how you plan to use it and then designs the space to fit your every need. She's very creative and offers great suggestions to help with layout and flow. She's wonderful to work with and I would highly recommend her.

We were about a month behind where I wanted my company to be, however, considering my salon is about 5,000 sq ft, I do believe that Robert did the best he could in the 2month time he told me would take them 3. He and Mr Ham were very quick. If I pointed out areas where it could’ve used a little more detail, they quickly fixed it when they came. Of course I didn’t want to have to point anything out at all, but it’s almost impossible to have everything sorted out on the first try, and I’ve had friends who said their 6month project turned out to take a whole year with a different contractor, so I think ours turned out great I’m that regard. If you’re looking for quick, go with Construction420. They’ll get the job done. Just make sure you point out exactly what you want if you don’t want it done twice. Be very clear with making a punch list in the priority you want it done. They don’t like adding anything to their list in the middle of working, so be sure you have a clear list, with which materials, item, etc if you are not going to hire a designer.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
