Nick has truly taken the time to make me understand math so much easier. I love the way he takes his time in explaining without getting annoyed with myself having to keep interrupting him with what seems like stupid question to me but great to him. I can go on and on about how he teaches me but choosing Nick to teach me was the best thing ever. Thanks Mr. Nick for all the lesson taught regarding what use to be my worse subject Math

Our family met Gary when he became the Math and Science teacher for our daughters at Aya Educational Institute. Our eldest daughter loved math. Gary challenged her knowledge and led her to explore/master concepts in trigonometry and physics that she uses today with her students and younger family members. Our youngest daughter hated math/science due to learning challenges. Gary partnered with her and helped her become comfortable and proficient in geometry and physics. While she still works very hard to maintain her level of knowledge, she is aided by the patience, creativity, and commitment she received from her two years with Gary! As a learning partner, Gary uses his considerable expertise to guide, challenge, and support his students at every point along their journey. We wholeheartedly recommend Gary as a learning partner for your student regardless of their ability/knowledge of mathematical or scientific principles. The Hampton Family

Throughout the year I attended Tutelage Academy, Charles has helped me become a more productive student. Not only did he teach me how to study effectively through deliberate practice, but he also taught me lifestyle choices such as time management which I still implement into my life daily. Charles emphasized the importance of time and how it should be spent, and his work ethic exhibits this belief. Everything he states from a step-by-step technique to a witty life story turns into a lesson.

I started piano lessons with Dr. John Stonko of American Piano Academy a year and a half ago after almost thirty years since my last lesson. It has been such a rewarding return! From the onset, Dr. Stonko has been astute in assessing my abilities and engaged in what I would like to accomplish musically. He has therefore developed a plan personal to me. I think this focus on individual learning distinguishes APA from other piano instruction. In fact, I was wary of the absence of a personal approach when I began my search for a teacher. I think it's fairly common for many piano teachers to assign an all-in-one book of theory, exercises and excerpts of favorite melodies. Consequently, students learn the piano in a very limited manner. Fortunately, this is not the case with Dr. Stonko. Whether you are a beginner or wish to resume piano studies, you will find that the lessons with APA are dynamic and worthwhile. You will advance in technique and repertoire. By the way, my husband who has played piano all his life and participates in piano competitions, has also studied with Dr. Stonko and finds his teaching incredibly smart. On a last note, I would simply add that these are great lessons and every week I am eager to learn more.

    About

I'm a great tutor not only because I know my Spanish well, but I have the keen ability to motivate students to do their best. I love empowering people and seeing them get excited about what they can do. So even when I teach a student who is struggling at first, they end up gaining confidence in themselves and see the material as fun and exciting. To me, that is the greatest reward--seeing students' success and being a part of that success.

While I have poked my nose in a little of a lot of different topics, I am most fluent in the Spanish language. My Spanish background starts with my family, being that I am Hispanic and come from a fluently Spanish speaking family. I have also done many translating jobs as well as worked in professional environments were there were large solely Spanish speaking communities. I have not quite done any professional Spanish tutoring; however, I am confident that I can help you to be fluent in speaking, reading and writing in the Spanish language.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:
