The house looks wonderful! Stephanie has a good selection of furniture, accent pieces & accessories and an excellent knack for interior design. She was super professional, worked with our tight schedule and completed the staging within the same day at a very reasonable price. Our realtor loved her choices too and was open to the realtor's suggestions too while wrapping up.

I absolutely loved working with Sara! I had a limited budget to furnish my apartment which she honored. Sara picked out elegant pieces that were within my budget and worked with me to make sure I felt comfortable moving forward. Sara immediately captured my Sara, which made me feel like she was really listening to me :) If you are looking for an interior decorator, don't hesitate to hire Sara.

I hired Patt for a big decorating/design project that totally transformed my home over a 6-month period. She began with storyboards that laid out design options for each room and provided a future vision of what my home could be. This allowed us to talk in concrete terms about her creative ideas and my own preferences, making the experience both fun and collaborative. Patt is very creative and always came with good advice and fresh ideas to maximize the space I have. She offered multiple options presenting different color and pattern choices, tips to create the illusion of space, editing possessions and finding ways to incorporating others, and making walls disappear into the background. Today, I receive many compliments on my home decor and was even interviewed to be on a TV show highlighting well-decorated homes. I wholeheartedly recommend Patt for any decorating project!

I am always happy to refer Kevyn Connelly!! I love having her in my home. She is a very talented artist!! She painted my foyer bath with a faux finish and a beautiful bird motif that she did freehand. She's done my entire dining room, and basement bathroom walls. She's refinished furniture and accessories for me including a french mirror. I currently have a list of projects that I am scheduling her to come back and do. She is always very timely. She left my home like she was never there—just more beautiful! I love her! She's become a friend. I can leave her alone in my home with no worries! She made sure I was completely satisfied before payment. You can’t go wrong with hiring Kevyn!

It is hard to describe what a wonderful job Elsie did for us.. She downsized/de-cluttered my possessions , organized what was remaining & packed it up for me!! She then hired a mover & supervised the move. She then began all over again - she unpacked & organized us at our new place.. In addition to that, Elsie has experience in interior design & had the movers place my furniture , lay my orientals & hang my artwork!! When we decide to move again, Elsie will be my first call! She did a great job of whatever tasks I gave her -- I would not hesitate to recommend her to anyone - she's a very hard working , responsible lady.

Susan did an outstanding job staging my northeast Atlanta home at an incredibly affordable price. Her service was expedient, with the entire process of staging my kitchen, dining area, living area, master bedroom and bath, a second bath, and front and back porches being completed within the course of about 3-4 days. Her taste and eye for detail are just impeccable, and she was such a delight to work with. I believe staging my home is the key to getting it sold quickly!

I worked with Bushra from Belegant Homes on a project earlier this year, to remodel my 3 bedroom home. Busha was very professional. Everything she did she explained clearly at the beginning, leaving no room for surprises or confusion, which allowed us to establish trust in our new relationship. She listened attentively to my needs (no matter how picky I was) and in the end she delivered a design package that I was overjoyed with. I really appreciated how transparent the process was. I highly recommend Belegant Homes and will definitely use them again for any future design needs. Malikah Stevens

We first worked with Andrea when we moved into a new home and needed help with paint colors and furniture. Andrea listened closely to understand our personal style and then recommended colors so that every room was different but flowed together beautifully, and fit our lifestyle. She also recommended the furniture to ensure it was the right proportion and suggested special pieces that we still treasure today. We received so many enthusiastic compliments on our home. Since then we worked again with Andrea during a complete remodel of our vacation home, and on another new home after we moved out of state from the original home. I can’t say enough about Andrea’s extraordinary design eye and her special way of working with clients. She is both friendly and direct; she suggested where we could save money and when we should splurge to make an impact. It worked for us every time. I highly recommend Andrea to anyone looking for the best in decorating and design.

Julie was recommended to us by our real estate agent, and I must admit that we were a bit leery about working with an interior designer. We had a limited budget, and were concerned about whether we would be listened to. We had lots of ideas, but as two busy professionals, we had no time to flesh out those ideas or research products. We were worried about hiring contractors who would take us for a ride. As it turned out, there was no reason to worry, because working with Julie was fabulous! She listened, and developed a kitchen design that perfectly fit the aesthetic of our house. She was prompt, detail oriented, and steered us to products that were classy and fit the budget. She was patient, sensitive, and a pleasure to work with. The remodeling team that she works with were tops, and were at our house every day until the job was done. We couldn't be more pleased, as we know that kitchen remodels can be a nightmare. Our kitchen is beautiful and so much more functional to cook in.

I have used Studio B Designs twice for different interior projects (both large and small) and plan to use them again for a third project (master bath renovation). Rachael and Adam really understand your own personal style, lifestyle and functional needs then recommend and select designs that work - whether it is room renovation, lighting, fixtures, paint colors, fabrics, tile, etc! And at the same time, they gently, appropriately push you in a design direction that you might not have envisioned but absolutely works. I completely trust them and could not be happier with everything they have done for me in my home. I love working with Studio B Designs and highly recommend you do too!

I had a garage full of furniture I was about to throw out. I called IReNew to help me buy new pieces and design my rooms. They came for the consultation and told me what they could do with my old stuff and how they could save my thousands of dollars by repurposing my old stuff. I was hesitant at first but I saw the vision board and fell in love with the ideas. After 5 days my space was complete! Perfect and custom! Everything was amazing and homely and all of my old pieces with all their history once again had a place in my home.

Cassie at MC Designs was easy to work with on designing our new two new office spaces. She handled the concept, space planning and layout, color palette, furniture/accessory/artwork selection, and implementation of the design. We plan on working with MC Designs in the near future on another upcoming project for our small business by having her design four new office spaces we are adding to our additional building within the next six months.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
