Becky Shanks was very professional in her approach to setting up my hypnosis session. She sought background information that could be incorporated in the hypnosis, making our session orientated to my personal needs. Becky also relies on a very calm, engaging and soothing approach to her hypnosis putting you into a very relaxed and receptive state, even if you are a first time user as I was. So, if you have ever thought that hypnotherapy might bring benefits to your life I would suggest giving Becky an opportunity to address your needs.

I have been a client of Dr. Anderson for many years and contact him whenever I need help with phobias, fear, etc. This past month I was informed that I needed major surgery. Due to my fear of hospitals/doctors, I called Dr. Anderson for a hypnosis session to alleviate the anxiety and fear related to the surgical procedure. Dr. Anderson spent approximately one-hour walking me through a series of mental/audible visionary work which allowed me to see that the doctors were indeed there to help me continue my life in better health; while explaining that my fears were unfounded and based upon negative experiences with the healthcare community from childhood. Not only did I show up for the surgery (which I had put off for five years) but my surgeon reported to me that I was one of his most successful surgeries to date; he reported there were no complications, little blood loss, and that my body had cooperated beautifully with what need to be done. Something he didn’t experience often in his work. Thank you Dr. Anderson for your support and Hypnotherapy genius. Without your support throughout the years, I probably would not have achieved as much success in aspects of my life, dreams, goals, and health…

I had a Great experience with GA Hypnotherapy. I have done hypnosis before, but no one has taught me the two techniques that Mrs. Shawn did which works awesome with anxiety. I had anxiety off the charts about getting a tattoo on Saturday afternoon. I went under hypnosis and came out very calm and energized. When I went for my tattoo, my anxiety was low. My pain tolerance was low as well. I handle a hour and 15 minute tattoo to express my story of my son with autism and how Captain America helped my son with his journey of Autism. The tattoo artist was impressed how well I did and EVERYONE that has seen my tattoo is so shocked that I have no swelling nor bruising which is common with getting a tattoo. The artist told me that since I was so relaxed, he was able to do the fine detail to art. Thanks to Mrs. Shawn I have the artwork of my dreams and everywhere I go people are in awe of my tattoo.

I had a positive experience through my therapy sessions with Inga. I thought it was very helpful to have the tapes to listen to in order to reinforce the concepts we went over. I'll continue to listen to those tapes and change my negatives thoughts to become more assertive and confidant in my daily life and future aspirations. I have found some other helpful material on the subject of self confidence and positive thinking, but having it geared to my specific needs and the personal contact was especially beneficial.

I have been a client of Dr. Crow for nearly a year and a half for weight loss after seeing a doctor of hypnosis on the Dr. Oz show talking about doing a virtual bypass lap-band. I had been considering having the surgery but this option seemed to be much safer and far less expensive. After beginning my session with Dr. Crow, I have lost around 50 lb and am still losing. This program has helped me deal realistically with my food choices and habits. There is so much to learn and adapt especially in the subconscious mind. It's not mind control by hypnotic means, it's learning through the subconscious mind with a skillful guide. I would highly recommend (and I have) anyone to see Dr. Crow for help with any area of their life that one would want to improve.

I love what I do! Hypnotherapy is amazing. There's a quote that says best: The missing piece between good intentions and effective action is the ability to align your subconscious beliefs with your conscious goals." It's amazing to watch the transformation people experience when their subconscious and conscious minds work as one. Goals are achieved, deadlines are met, and peace of mind becomes the new norm.

My work stands out because I'm effective. I get results. Sometimes the results happen after just one session! I constantly get people who have tried other hypnotherapists in the area and got little to no results, so they came to me as a last ditch effort. I'm always surprised that they are so blown away by my hypnotic techniques and they reveal to me that others did not apply hypnosis the same way I do. No wonder it didn't work for them? I can only wonder what the heck techniques they are using? I was trained by the best hypnotists in the country, so that's the reason I'm so good. Plus, I continue to educate myself weekly so I'm always up to date and perfecting my techniques. (I feel like that sounded very egotistical, but I'm not at all. I'm just confident!) Giving clients real hope and tangible relief.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How does hypnosis work?

Hypnosis is a wellness technique that works by promoting positive behavioral or cognitive changes. During successful hypnosis, the client should be eased into a state of deep relaxation in which the conscious mind takes a back seat and the subconscious mind becomes more active. The client is often able to let go of critical thoughts and become receptive to the therapist’s suggestions. In this state of hypnosis, motivating suggestions can bypass your usual mental resistance and internal defense mechanisms. For example, even if you want to quit overeating cupcakes, you may have some level of resistance that your rational mind can’t overcome. During hypnosis, the positive suggestions made by the hypnotherapist can bypass your usual blocks, helping you to achieve the formerly unachievable: stopping overeating, quitting smoking, mastering public speaking, or losing your fear of heights. The goal of hypnosis is to strengthen and empower the client’s motivation, commitment and focus. Consider working with someone who is not just trained in hypnosis but also is a licensed therapist or psychotherapist who can bring their academic background into your session.

What can hypnosis help you with?

According to many sources including the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) which is part of the United States National Library of Medicine and a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), hypnosis is scientifically proven to help relieve both mental challenges and physical pains. Hypnosis can alleviate stress and reduce pain after surgeries, has been shown to relieve anxiety in children in the emergency room, and can be useful for managing pain associated with everything from arthritis to migraines. Hypnosis is non-invasive and gives you a way to control pain or discomfort that might otherwise seem out of your hands. Hypnosis shouldn’t be used as a substitute for medical care, but may be an excellent complementary tool that is best provided by a trained therapist or licensed medical provider. The University of Maryland Medical Center shares many conditions for which hypnosis can be useful:

    • Irritable bowel syndrome
    • Tension headaches
    • Alopecia areata
    • Asthma
    • Phobias
    • Insomnia
    • Addictions
    • Bedwetting
    • Fibromyalgia
    • Labor and delivery
    • Skin disorders, such as acne, psoriasis and eczema (atopic dermatitis)
    • Stress
    • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
    • Cancer-related pain
    • Weight loss
    • Eating disorders
    • Warts
    • Indigestion (dyspepsia)
    • Post-traumatic stress disorder
    • Smoking cessation

How is hypnosis used in therapy?

Hypnosis is a powerful tool to help clients overcome challenging issues such as anxiety, phobias, pain management, hot flashes and more. Hypnosis is also a way to help let go of addictions like smoking, overeating and gambling. In and of itself, hypnosis is not a therapy, but it can be used in conjunction with therapy to empower and encourage the person receiving it to make positive change. Some people are more susceptible to hypnosis and will benefit more from hypnotherapy than others.

According to Dr. Clifford N. Lazarus, speaking for Psychology Today, hypnosis is a “genuine psychological phenomenon that has valid uses in clinical practice … hypnosis is a state of highly focused attention or concentration, often associated with relaxation, and heightened suggestibility. While under hypnosis (i.e., in a hypnotic trance), it seems many people are much more open to helpful suggestions than they usually are.” The suggestions made in a therapeutic setting get deep into a person’s brain, beyond their conscious thinking, leading to behavior change and the ability to overcome challenges that might otherwise seem insurmountable.

What is the effectiveness of hypnosis?

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recognizes the healing power of hypnosis and its proven effectiveness for anxiety, pain control, smoking cessation, headaches and more. Hypnosis may be safe and complementary way to augment medical attention you are receiving for a chronic illness or pain, or a way to resolve an addiction or phobia that you are otherwise unable to control. Hypnosis does not work on every person. When scientists began studying hypnosis in earnest, a report published by Stanford University titled “The Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale” demonstrated that different brains respond to hypnosis in varying degrees, and a very few do not respond at all. Working with a trained psychologist, you’ll soon determine whether you are a good candidate for the healing benefits of hypnotherapy.

During a hypnotherapy session, the therapist will bring you into a state of deep relaxation in which the critical, conscious part of your brain recedes and the subconscious mind becomes alert and focused. The therapist will make suggestions, based on your intended goals, that will take root in your subconscious mind. These suggestions should affect your thinking in a positive way and empower you to make change.
