Danielle was great! I had her come and test for mold after a roof leak. She was thorough and responsive. She even found another concern in our attic - the dryer exhaust pipe had not been secured to the exhaust vent when our roof was replaced.

I was referred to Sick Building Group by someone who has a positive mold remediation experience with Anthony and his team. As you know, it's easy for companies to capitalize on homeowner's fears when it comes to mold in the home, and I did not get that impression from Anthony or this company at all. He was prompt and courteous in communication and showed to all meetings in time. We had a mold issue on all levels of the home (including attic and basement), and Sick Building Group presented a plan to remediate as fully as possible while also respecting costs. We were out of town for part of the work and trusted this company with our home. Now that work is complete, we received a clearance test and warranty on the work for 10 years. Anthony is friendly and approachable, while also being extremely knowledgeable. I highly recommend Sick Building Group and am glad we were in their hands for this difficult type of work.

Dave is knowledgeable, ethical, and does not try to up-sell you at all - in fact we had to push a little to get him to do an extra air sample because it was going to cost extra and he didn't want us to think he was trying to push it on us. He is an overall home inspector, which has its advantages because he can understand the whole picture beyond just the mold and air quality issues, but he is in fact an expert on and specializes in mold detection and other environmental issues, and that is why we hired him. We enjoyed working with Dave.

Brandon and team did an excellent job. I had an end to my due diligence period in only three days, and was blindsided by a mold discovery during inspection for the sale of my home. I posted a request for mold remediation estimates, and Brandon came out on the very same day, was flexible, extremely patient, and explained the entire process - which was several steps. While Square Soft did not come in with the lowest estimate, we chose this company because of Brandon's professionalism, my trust in his ability to get the job done right, and his willingness to have a team come out and do the work on the *next day*, when we were in a terrible pinch! Brandon and Team showed up when promised and got rid of a frightening amount of mold that had been growing without my knowledge in the crawl space. They took their time, were thorough in the job, and did not skimp on either time or materials. In addition, the team was polite, pleasant, and considerate, much like Brandon. Brandon and crew applied special solution, scrubbed, fogged the crawlspace and inside the home, and cleaned HVAC vent areas to kill, remove, and prevent any reintroduction of mold. They did some other some other stuff too, but I'm not an expert. It certainly was a THOROUGH JOB! The result was a crawl space that was scrubbed clean and looked brand new. All of the wood beams are clean, the crawl space smells fresh and dry, and the buyers agreed to move forward! I can't say enough about Square Soft - I have absolutely no idea what I would have done without them. They saved my deal with high quality work, and I'm so glad we found them here on thumbtack.

Mark with Genesis Home Solutions really made me feel comfortable with his quote and his advice. He didn't rush our response or push for extra services. Would say I would use again but don't want to jinx myself with needing to 😀. However, I will definitely recommend to anyone needing mold remediation.

I contacted Raymond under a week ago about a mold issue in our very small home. He always answered or returned phone calls promptly and got to work in a timely manner. In under a week we had a complete mold remediation. I must say that Raymond went above and beyond here in our very small cramped attic. I know it was a very cumbersome job and I honestly feel like he finished the job more thorough than anyone else could have. He went the extra mile to make sure our family was safe and comfortable. He was honest, affordable, friendly, and thorough. I will be referring him to all my friends and family and I will be using him for an inspection when we buy a new house in the spring. Thanks for everything Raymond! We are super pleased!

I had Mike Dixon come out to do a mold inspection (one of a few estimates I got for the job). He was nothing but respectful of my time, my actual needs and my home - three things that I did not find in most of the other contractors I looked at. He was super communicative (via text and in person, which was a requirement of mine), did a full inspection of my house to see if there were any other issues that could be causing the problem. And he didn't find a ton of things wrong despite it being a 98 year old house - I expected him to act like a typical contractor and find 19 things wrong that all had an insane costs associated with them. He just made gentle and, again, respectful suggestions of things I might want to take care of at some point. I felt in no way pressured to make any decisions right that second, and he was clear that he would work up fully-broken down set of estimates within a few days. And he did a great job cleaning up the mold for less than other quotes (and I don't always hire the cheapest out there), recognizing that in the land of contracting, doing a good low cost, thorough job in the short term gets you more business in the long term. As a former small business owner, I have a great deal of respect for anyone who understands that basic tenant of good business. I look forward to working with him again in the future on other projects!

Hassan took care of everything when we found a leak under the kitchen sink. He determined the damage was not as severe and the sheet rock and insulation below the could be dried/treated and did not need to be cut away and replaced as was quoted by other water damage remediation companies. Hassan moved fast to get the equipment in place and really saved the day coordinating a plumber he knew to fix the cause and kept me informed the entire time about what to expect. I would recommend Hassan and I will be keeping his number. I will post before and after photos when I get a chance so you can see the work.

The Remediation Team did not have to perform any repairs at my house. Which is exactly why they earned my 4 star rating-by being honest! Instead of telling me to spend $800-$1000 on our chimney, they said we simply needed to have our gutters cleaned and this would stop the water that had leaked through front of our fireplace. My husband had a broken hand and had not been able to clean them. Once we got that completed, the leaking did not occur with the next rain.

Steve was very customer friendly from the beginning. He provided me with all options up front the best he could do to the uncertainty of the damage. He was accessible whenever I had concerns or questions in regards to what I was being told by my insurance provider. He was big on not disrupting me and family as much as he could. His team was amazing also. They never left things in a mess and were just as customer friendly as Steve. He made this experience a real good one do to I'm allergic to mold and I'd never experienced anything like this before. If I was to ever experience anything like this again, I'm contacting this company. So glad I didn't go with Serv Pro. Nothing like customer reviews to assist you in making a big decision. Got a water or mold issue call Steve and his crew?

I was in the process of selling my house when I realized I had a BAD moisture/mold issue in the crawlspace. Steve Woodward came highly recommended by my roofing contractor. I couldn’t be happier I made the call. Steve arrived to my home at our agreed upon time and explained my issues in detail. Steve worked with me on the price since this was not covered under insurance. He was always courteous and professional while onsite and kept me informed through every step of the process. At the end of the job Steve presented complete documentation of the work performed with before and after pictures. The crawlspace looked better than new. I was extremely happy with the entire process and have recommended Steve to all my friends and family for water and mold mitigation.

These guys are great! Had an issue that needed to be addressed at my rental property and received an immediate callback. Mark spent a great deal of time on the phone with me - showed up the next day, early at that. Provided a thorough walk-thru and inspection of the property. Though no issues were found, he even took the time to educate my renter (with my permission) on how to remedy the issue that she was having (it turned out to be a cleaning issue on her part). The inspection was free in my case. It's so nice to have an HONEST and professional group in the area to count on in this specialized field. I would highly recommend them! I will be calling them back in the future for both my rental and my current home. Fantastic!

Rating is based on the quote only. We had 2 visits by 2 FloodX employees and would definetly hire them based on their responsiveness, clear explanations, professionalism, and price. We were concerned we had a mold issue under our bathroom tile and were given a lot of great information and some relief that the issue was not as bad as we suspected. We had one visit re: a potential leak and then a recommended visit to discuss how to tackle and rid of potential mold, should we find anything down deeper into the structure down the road. Both employees were very helpful and polite and explained solutions clearly. Felt like they cared which is appreciated these days! Thank you FloodX!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mold remediation?

Mold remediation is the process of identifying and removing unhealthy levels of mold that have colonized in a home, office, school or other building. Over time, if untreated, mold can destroy a home by breaking down cellulose-based materials (like wood or ceiling tiles) and causing a slow and messy decay. In the shorter term, a mold infestation can cause severe health problems. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), mold can trigger respiratory problems, nasal and sinus congestion, eye irritation, nose or throat irritation, skin irritations, problems with your nervous system, and aches and pains. Mold inspection and mold remediation are often requested in tandem, although they are two separate services. Nationally, mold inspection costs range from $250 to $300. If mold has been positively identified in your house, either by visual examination or through mold testing, remediation can safely remove it. Properly trained and equipped professionals use specialized equipment (like vacuums and air scrubbers with HEPA filters) to keep mold spores contained while they remove contaminated materials and treat infested areas with antimicrobial spray. A key component to a successful mold remediation after eliminating the mold is ensuring that the water source that caused the mold infestation is also resolved.

How does mold remediation work?

Mold remediation can eliminate mold colonies from your home or business. Mold is a normal part of daily life, but in wet or humid settings mold can quickly colonize and spread by making spores. Whether visible or hidden, untreated mold can cause real health problems and cause extensive (and expensive) damage to your property. Mold remediation involves killing the mold, removing the dead mold and preventing future mold growth. Here is an example of the steps involved in professional mold remediation:

  • Contain work area and apply negative air pressure HEPA air purifiers to prevent cross-contamination. If spores spread, the colonies can easily regrow elsewhere in your home.
  • Mist an EPA-registered antimicrobial to suspend and kill mold spores.
  • Remove affected building surfaces.
  • Bag and dispose of contaminated materials properly.
  • Treat cavities/underlayment and dehumidify.
  • Abrasively remove dead loose mold.
  • Apply EPA-registered protective sealer.
  • Perform clearance testing.

Remove containment materials.

How is a mold test done?

Mold testing can help identify a mold infestation in your home or business. Mold inspection costs can vary based on the type of test you want done and the number of samples you request. The national average mold inspection cost is $250-$300. The EPA explains that if you have a visible mold problem, in most cases sampling and testing is unnecessary. However, if you have unexplained and potential mold-related illness or can smell mold in your house, mold inspection costs may be a good investment. To avoid unscrupulous testers, the EPA recommends working with a testing agency that adheres to the analytical methods laid out by professional organizations such as the American Industrial Hygiene Association or the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. Mold inspection costs can vary based on the type of testing done. Prices can also vary, depending on the size of the home, the number of surface areas to be tested, and the extent of the mold infestation. Here are some examples of mold inspection average costs:

  • Swab testing: $200-$300
    • A professional collects a surface swab from a potentially infested area for testing in a lab. Some professionals have concerns about this being the sole test done because it only gathers a small amount of data from a certain area of the house. That’s why it’s frequently done in conjunction with air cell testing.
  • Air cell testing: $250-$350
    • A professional collects an air sample in the home to measure the amount of mold spores in the air. This test is frequently done in conjunction with swab testing to ensure more complete data. Costs are higher for this test because the equipment required of the contractor is more expensive.
  • Both air cell and swab tests provided by the same company: $400-$600.

How do you get rid of mold?

Mold is a naturally occurring and important part of our ecosystem. That said, excessive mold can actually be hazardous to your health. Mold remediation is usually the best strategy to get rid of unhealthy levels of mold in your home or office. If you’re not comfortable working with mold or the area is larger than 10 square feet (3 feet by 3 feet), it is highly recommended to hire a mold remediation professional to resolve the problem. However, if you’re DIY-savvy, don’t have any health risks, and are not freaked out by mold, the EPA gives homeowners the greenlight to clean mold areas that are less than 10 square feet. Here are some EPA-recommended DIY cleaning tips:

  • Fix plumbing leaks and other water problems as soon as possible. Dry all items completely.
  • Scrub mold off hard surfaces with detergent and water, and dry completely.
  • Throw away absorbent or porous materials (like ceiling tiles and carpet) if they become moldy.
  • Avoid exposing yourself or others to mold.
  • Do not paint or caulk moldy surfaces. Clean up the mold and dry the surfaces before painting. Paint applied over moldy surfaces is likely to peel.
  • If you are unsure about how to clean an item (art, fine furniture, etc.) consult a reputable specialist affiliated with a professional organization in their field.

Is mold damage covered by insurance?

Mold damage may or may not be covered by your homeowner's insurance. Mold damage is caused by standing water and excess moisture. Mold damage can be covered by insurance when an item already covered under your homeowners insurance breaks accidentally — for example, if your plumbing suddenly ruptures and water floods your house, the homeowners insurance will cover part or all of the costs for the plumbing repair and any mold remediation costs necessary as a direct result of the water damage.

But you may not be able to get insurance to pay for your mold remediation costs if the damage is a result of your neglect — for example, if you’ve had a slow leak under your bathroom sink for years and have ignored the issue. If the insurer can determine that the mold damage is a result of your negligence, they likely won’t cover mold remediation costs. Also, most homeowners insurance will usually not cover mold remediation costs after a flood unless you have a special insurance rider covering your home in case of a flood. To help prevent mold damage, always keep humidity levels in your house between 30 percent and 60 percent, clean up water spills and damp areas right away, and ensure you have exhaust fans in your kitchen and bathroom.
