From the moment I contacted Scott my experience was enjoyable. He was quick to come out and provide a quote and spent plenty of time with me during our first meeting to discuss expectations and plans. I was really nervous because it was my first time to ever paint. Scott provided me honest opinions and advice and was very patient with me. When I finally decided on my paint colors five star was able to quickly arrange a time for the project to happen. Kristen was my project manager and did an absolute amazing job walking the painters through and making sure they knew exactly what to do. The crew was enjoyable to be around and treated my furniture with care. They were hard workers and really made sure the job was done exactly right. When they were through they cleaned up and even vacuumed my floors . Everyone with Five-Star exceeded my expectations. I thoroughly recommend using this company. Thank you again for the outstanding customer service and paint job.See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

What should I ask a deck contractor?

One of the first questions you should ask is whether the contractor has the proper license or insurance. To be a licensed contractor in many states, they must have the experience and knowledge to pass the requirements from your state’s licensing board.

You should also inquire if they have done work related to your specific project. Just because they’re a contractor, that doesn’t mean they’ve built a deck or an addition like yours. Ask for photographs of decks they've built in the past, and go online to read reviews from past clients.

You also need to ask for a free estimate from several contractors so you know how much the project will cost you and so you can pay the best price.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. The square footage of the space, the type of materials to be used, the intricacy of the project and your specific region can cause the price to fluctuate. To find out how much your new deck will cost, get free estimates from the best deck contractors near you.

How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it hard to build a deck yourself?

If you don’t have the skills, experience and qualifications, building a deck may be difficult for you to do on your own.

Structural integrity is key when constructing anything, but especially something you plan to have your family and friends use regularly. The safety of the structure takes careful planning and experience.

Professional contractors have the knowledge to make a safe, beautiful deck for you. They also know the proper permits and insurance required to legally build a new deck or remodel a porch in your city.

When in doubt, contact the best deck contractors near you and start getting free estimates today.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

Hired Pace to repair my deck. Great job! Did what they said they would do, in the time it would take, for the price quoted. I wish they did more than decks and fences!

We had 6 contractors come to our house to take a look at our deck and provide us with a quote to have it pressure washed, sanded, repaired, and stained. Keith and Lynne were on time and very quick to provide us with a fair quote for the amount of work we were requesting. They did a fantastic job and even our neighbor inquired about them because they were impressed with the refinished deck. I would definitely hire them again.

I contacted Jason to help reinforce a sagging sunroom and deck. He was out to look at it the next day and got started on the job the day after that. One day later, the job was finished. I am very impressed with the speed and quality of Jason's work. I'd definitely hire him again and would recommend him to anyone!

Javier did a fantastic job on my back deck! He fully explained everything he'd planned to do and did it without taking any short cuts. He told me the job would be done in 3 days and it was. Professional, punctual, and hard working are just a few words to describe how strongly I recommend him and Sands Construction. I will definitely use Sands Construction again.

Richard replaced a two-tiered elevated deck + ten stairs that leads up to my second-story front door. My original stairs had collapsed due to rot and poor construction (they were old). He came right away to give me a quote and was able to assess the damage and rebuild new construction that matched the old design—but with updated (much nicer!) design elements and solid construction that’s up to code. He’s thorough, reliable, and talented. He was also good about pointing out additional problem areas in my house related to my old stairs’ water damage that I’ll need to get fixed when I replace the siding—not his expertise, but something he uncovered when he was working. I appreciate that attention to detail. I have a larger elevated deck in my backyard that needs replacing next year, and he will be the first person I call. Excellent contractor, excellent work.

I initially messaged with this individual on Saturday. He referred me to his website to see some of his work. I informed him the site was not working, but still inquired on having him come out and look at my deck. He told me to select a date and time for him to come out. On Sunday, I selected June 19th @ 5PM and sent my address with the request. I did not hear from him nor receive confirmation of the appointment until 5:28PM on June 19th (how do you confirm an appointment after the appointment time??) Needless to say I was not home since I never received confirmation. I come home to find a business card on my door and under the windshield wiper blade of a vehicle in my driveway. He did not contact me to say he was at my home. I messaged to ask did he at least look at the deck since he decided to pop up, but unfortunately he is not responsive. I will look elsewhere..
