Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a wedding officiant during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The safest way to conduct a consultation during COVID-19 is virtually. Ask wedding officiants near you if they can have a phone call or a virtual appointment over video chat. If they can, make sure to ask them any questions you have about upcoming work. Discuss what precautions, if any, they have in place to ensure safety. You might consider asking if they accept digital payments or if they can complete the work remotely, without any in-person contact.

Do wedding officiants offer remote or virtual services?

Reach out to wedding officiants in your area, and ask them if they can offer a remote or virtual ceremony. Some officiants may be willing to meet in person while maintaining 6 feet of distance, while others may prefer to conduct the entire service over the phone or a video call service such as Skype or Zoom.

Familiarize yourself with the social distancing rules in your community, city and state, and move forward only if both you and the officiant are comfortable with the arrangement.

Can I use digital payments to pay for a wedding officiant?

Ask your wedding officiant if they accept digital payments. Many professionals are accept payment via Venmo, PayPal, Square Cash, Apple Pay, Zelle and other online platforms. Professionals may be more willing to switch to digital payments during the COVID-19 pandemic, as this is typically considered safer than using cash or credit cards. You can see which digital payment options officiants accept by reviewing their online profiles.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a wedding officiant when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a wedding officiant when social distancing, ask if the officiant can offer remote services. Some wedding officiants are choosing to conduct services virtually and/or stand more than 6 feet away from the parties. Discuss possible arrangements with your wedding officiant, and familiarize yourself with your local community guidelines, as well as the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing. Only move forward if you and the officiant both feel comfortable.

You may want to implement extra precautions, such as using digital payments instead of exchanging cash, sanitizing all involved spaces and waving instead of shaking hands.

How can I find out if a wedding officiant is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

The definition of essential services varies by location, so you will need to visit your state or city government website to learn what is considered an essential service in your area.

For more information on a national level, read CISA’s publication on critical infrastructure workers. Some, but not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a wedding officiant need to enter my home?

This depends on the location of your wedding. Unless the ceremony is being held in your home, a wedding officiant will not need to enter your home before the ceremony. Some couples are choosing to stand outside or go to a vacant public place, so the officiant can conduct the ceremony while maintaining 6 feet of distance. Ask your wedding officiant what kinds of arrangements they offer, including virtual or remote services.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.

My husband and I chose Matt to be our wedding officiant, which recently took place during COVID-19. Matt was very professional and wore a mask on arrival. He was so accommodating throughout the whole process and made our ceremony feel very special. Exactly what we wanted it to be. Our family told us afterwards how much they enjoyed his service. We would recommend Matt to anyone looking for an awesome officiant for their marriage!!! 11/10. Thanks Matt! :)

Carol officiated our whimsical wedding on April 5th and was wonderful. We had a themed 'woodland wonderland' wedding complete with fairies and Carol was right in the spirit of things even donning wings for us for pictures. She even coordinated her outfit. All of this was wonderful but it was Carols beautiful delivery of our ceremony that really mattered most. We were at ease with her from our first meeting and she really came through. We highly recommend her!

Carol was wondeful- excellent with communications throughout the planning prcoess, met with us and spent a good amount of time getting to know us and giving us the opportunity to get to know her, did an excellent job of helping to write the wedding vows, was punctual getting to the wedding and did a wonderful job conducting the ceremony. I was leary initially about hiring someone that I didn't know from the internet but that proved to be worrying for nothing. My husband and I would highly recommend Carol to anyone looking for an officiant.

Tia single handely almost ruined my wedding day, by not showing up! Let's 1st start with The price I was quoted on our initial conversation was $175 and the price I paid when we signed the contract was $225, because according to Tia prices go up within a few months, I still decided to go with her. Tia made appointments times for me to call and did not answer the calls twice and then called a few days later with an excuse. Text messages were not replied to in a timely manner either and the excuse was she was busy officiating weddings, when I text on a Tuesday. She also said she would reach out to family or friends that we gave emails for and didn't do so days before the wedding. Fast forward to the wedding day. I recieved a call about an hour before the wedding saying she was in traffic for 3 hours and would not be there until 30 minutes after my wedding start time, and told me not to panic. Not the best choice of words to tell a bride. I recieved another call 30 minutes later stating she wouldn't be there until an hour after my wedding start time and again not to panic. Are you kidding me? Don't panic? Thank goodness unbeknownst to me my day of coordinator was an officiant and stepped into marry us. Tia offered the script to the other officiant. What is still confusing to me is that my photographers came from the same area Tia was coming from and still managed to get to my husband in Atlanta and to me in Marrietta ON TIME! My caters were early and all my guests were on time, but some how Tia could not make it on time. I contacted Tia the next day for a refund. She never offered a refund the day of the wedding. She stated she would give a partial refund of $125 because the script was her time and work. I agreed she should keep her $50 deposit for time and work and I did not ask for the script, she offered it. I also informed her that it was not enough to pay for the officiant that did marry us, that I had to pay! Tia never responded and proceeded to send back the $125 and not the $175 I requested. She caused so much stress to my husband and I on a day that was supposed to be blissful. I hope the $50 was worth it to her. No remorse, no class, no respect as to even respond to me. Please do not trust Tia with such a special day as your wedding.

Craig Dane was so great! We were looking for someone to officiate our wedding which we were planning in less than 48 hours notice and he was so pleasant and eager to help. Again we had less than 48 hours to get someone and he came through and made our wedding happen. He was very kind, professional and worked with us and met a second time with us after the wedding because we didn’t know what we were doing document wise. He guided us through the process and because it was such short notice we didn’t have the marriage license for him to sign the day of and he didn’t make us feel bad at all and met us on his own personal time the next day to sign our legal license of marriage. We couldn’t have asked for a better officiant. We plan on using him later as well for his other services for our reception. If you are looking for a great person to help you, he is the best choice!

We recently hired Patty as our wedding officiant in Marietta, GA. Her response to our search, her website and the excellent reviews on her page made us pick her. We were glad we did! Your Wedding Your Way is EXACTLY what you get. Patty met with us in advance of our big day to get to know us and learn what we wanted our ceremony to sound and feel like. She gave us three ceremony options to review while providing many more options to choose from, including how to integrate our small daughter into the ceremony. Patty was responsive, accommodating to our needs (our wedding ceremony was broadcast live to family members halfway around the world), was on time and has an inviting and warm personality. Thank you, Patty, for making our wedding day perfect!

We recently had Patricia perform the ceremony at our wedding. Everything turned out wonderfully. Patty was extremely professional and helpful. Due to the distance between us we were unable to meet her in advance before the wedding. She was able to send numerous different ceremony options for different vows, ring exchanges, etc. My husband and I read through the options and chose which we liked best, Patty then went above and beyond to customize the ceremony for us and made it extra special. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for an officiant. Thank you so much for the outstanding experience. Teia and Todd Nesmith

She always kept in touch. She was so open to my ideas for the ceremony. Unfortunately, Due to COVID-19 I’ve had to cancel my wedding in April. She quickly volunteered a quick ceremony for just the two of us. She knows that I’m military and I’m on a timeline. She came to my home and signed our paperwork and took care of mailing it express for us. When we decide on a future date, we will definitely have her officiate our ceremony.

Karyn was wonderful to work with! My fiancée and I decided on a Monday to get married that same week. Within 30 minutes of sending my information to her, she contacted me for additional details. I initially was hesitant because I have never used any service like Thumbtack or needed an officiant, but I felt extremely comfortable after talking with Karyn and I knew I was making a great decision. Our ceremony was nothing fancy, just getting it done and over with around less than 20 friends and family. We had a non-religious script with one Bible verse peppered in, and it was closed with a unique wedding blessing. Karyn showed up, delivered her script, and left - all slightly ahead of schedule (which we were easily able to accommodate with our family plans). Our family and friends were so impressed with Karyn’s style! She’s punctual, gets the job done, has witty humor thrown in, and has very unique phrasing that sets her apart. Her overall vibe is infectious and you’d be making a GREAT decision in selecting her for a ceremony.
